"To get my clothes."
Elena watched him drag his injured leg up the stairs, her eyebrows drawn in irritation.
Inside the master suite, Dustin opened the walk-in closet. His section—where his uniforms, casual shirts, and dress shoes usually hung—was completely bare. In the corner sat three black industrial trash bags, the gold braid of his dress uniform poking through a tear in the plastic.
Dustin knelt down on his good knee and untied the top. His pressed shirts were shoved inside like rags, crumpled beneath heavy dress shoes. The ceremonial uniform he had worn when receiving his life-saving commendation was crushed at the very bottom.
Elena appeared in the doorway, her arms crossed. "What are you doing?"
"Packing."
"Why are your clothes in garbage bags?"
Dustin raised his eyes to meet hers. "You tell me."
Elena glanced at the empty wardrobe, her tone completely flat. "Caleb needed space for his suits. I told the housekeeper to clear a few racks."
"So she stuffed my uniforms into trash bags?"
"They’re just clothes, Dustin. You can hang them back up when he leaves."
Dustin tied the knot on the first bag. "There won't be a need."
Elena’s patience ran out. "Are you seriously still throwing a tantrum over yesterday? I explained why I had to prioritize Caleb at the docks! Now you’re making a scene because I’m helping a colleague in need?"
"I’m moving to the naval base."
"You’re actually walking out?"
"Yes."
Elena let out a short, incredulous laugh. "Dustin, you are being utterly ridiculous. Caleb will be here for a week at most. Is your pride so fragile that you’d blow up our marriage over a guest room?"
Dustin hoisted the heavy trash bags over his shoulder, gripping his crutch with his free hand as he stepped out into the hallway.
At the bottom of the stairs, Caleb stood waiting with Lily. Seeing the trash bags, he clasped his hands together, his face twisting into an agonizing look of self-sacrificing guilt.
"Mr. Rhodes, please don't leave because of us," Caleb pleaded softly, stepping forward with his bandaged wrist held conspicuously against his chest. "If you're angry about the closet, I'll put my suits back in my luggage right now. Elena only insisted on hanging them because she didn't want the board to see me rumpled."
Dustin stopped on the bottom step, looking at Caleb standing in his apron, subtly flaunting Elena's protective care while playing the helpless victim.
"Put the girl down, Caleb," Dustin said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
Caleb blinked, looking timidly at Elena before nodding obediently. "Of course... sweetheart, go sit on the sofa for a minute."
He gently guided Lily to the couch, then turned back to Dustin with wide, dewy eyes and reached out with both hands as if to take the heavy trash bags. "Please, Mr. Rhodes, don't let our troubles tear you and Elena apart. If anyone has to be punished for this, punish me..."
Dustin suddenly struck him across the face with an open palm, the force of the slap snapping Caleb's head to the side.
"Caleb!" Elena shrieked, rushing down the stairs to catch him before he hit the floor. "Dustin! Have you lost your mind?!"
Lily burst into terrified screams from the carpet. Caleb curled against Elena's chest, clutching his reddening cheek and whimpering softly as tears streamed down his face. "I'm sorry... Mr. Rhodes, I'm so sorry, I only wanted to help you carry your things..."
"Then shut your mouth," Dustin said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "You live in my house, wear my clothes, and let your daughter call my wife 'Mommy.' Don't stand in front of me and play the victim."
Elena shielded Caleb with her body, her face burning with authoritarian fury. "How dare you lay a hand on him! He was trying to take your bags so you wouldn't strain your broken leg, and this is how you act?!"
"I didn't ask him to step foot in my house."
"He was trying to be thoughtful! You came through that door looking for a fight!" Elena stood tall, her CEO persona locking into place with unyielding dominance. "If you can't behave like a civilized adult around my guests, then maybe you should sleep in the barracks until you learn how to control your temper!"
"That’s the first sensible thing you’ve said all day."
Dustin picked up his garbage bags and turned toward the foyer.
Elena stepped past Caleb, shouting after him with icy, absolute authority. "Do you have any idea what divorcing me actually costs, Dustin Rhodes? You walk out that door, you leave with nothing! And if you ever want to step foot back inside this house, you will get down on your knees and apologize to Caleb for what you did today!"
Dustin didn't even look back. He adjusted the crutch beneath his arm and gave his final, unyielding parting words: "Have your lawyer contact mine."
He stepped out into the cold afternoon air, letting the heavy front door click shut behind him.
Five years. Five years of paying the mortgage, fixing every leak, and waiting up in an empty living room. Now, Caleb Hayes was settled into his home, while Dustin left with his life stuffed into garbage bags.
He entered the elevator, dragged his bags inside, and pressed the button for the ground floor.
The steel doors slid shut, cutting off Victoria’s voice for good.

Chapter 28
Elena woke before dawn, the silence of the empty villa pressing heavily against her chest. She spent two hours in the kitchen, carefully preparing steamed dumplings and a thermos of chicken broth, packing them into an insulated tote bag. In her mind, the confrontation at the restaurant was just another misunderstanding born from terrible timing. She had spent the night convincing herself that once Dustin saw her standing in front of him with warm food, his anger would soften. After all, she hadn't left for Caleb—she had left because an innocent child was supposedly in danger. No reasonable man could fault a woman for having a heart. She arrived at the Coast Guard base just after eight in the morning, holding the breakfast tote with a determined, hopeful posture. When she stepped into the administrative reception lobby, the duty officer glanced up from his desk, his expression instantly shifting into awkward reserve."Good morning," Elena said, giving him her usual polite, composed ex
Chapter 27
Dustin returned to the base dormitory alone. He hung his service jacket over the back of the desk chair and sat on the edge of the cot, unstrapping the brace from his injured leg. The bone throbbed with a dull, steady ache from walking through the cold drizzle, but the physical discomfort was nothing compared to the quiet weight settling in his chest. In the stillness of the room, the afternoon kept replaying in his mind.He could still see Elena kneeling on the linoleum in his office, her tailored clothes gathering dust, weeping into her hands as she begged for another chance. For five years, she had carried herself with untouchable corporate pride, never backing down from anyone. Yet today, she had stripped all of that away, putting Caleb on speakerphone right in front of him and writing a sacred pledge with her own hand.Dustin had not agreed to pause the divorce out of foolish weakness. Five years of shared devotion could not simply be erased overnight. Looking at their old weddin
Chapter 26
"I didn't know, Elena... I swear to God, I had no idea you were with Mr. Rhodes," Caleb wept, dropping his gaze as if crushed under the weight of his own foolishness. "The team asked me to get you here, and I panicked because you refused to come home earlier. It was a stupid, reckless mistake. Rachel and the board members have no idea what I said to you—none of them know about the phone call. Please, don't blame them."He took a ragged, choked breath, pressing a hand to his chest. "If I've ruined your marriage, Elena, I will submit my resignation tonight. I'll step down from the project, pack Lily’s bags, and leave the city entirely. I never wanted to cause you this kind of pain."Elena stared at him, her chest aching with an unbearable mixture of fury and exhaustion. He was offering to resign, weeping like a martyr in front of her, just as he always did whenever his thoughtless actions spiraled out of control. Part of her wanted to scream at him to get out of her sight forever.Yet a
Chapter 25
The rain beat hard against the windshield as Elena spun the steering wheel, veering off the expressway ramp toward the waterfront district. Her mind was a chaotic tangle of dread and confusion. Rachel’s words kept echoing over the roar of the engine: The child is already being cared for. Don't go to the hospital. Come directly to the company's private executive club right now.If Lily was in critical condition, why would anyone be at the club? Why would Rachel sound so uneasy instead of terrified?Elena parked haphazardly near the entrance of Caldwell Marine’s private executive facility, leaving her engine running for a second while she caught her breath. She grabbed her purse, pushed through the heavy glass doors, and hurried down the mirrored hallway. She expected to find an emergency room overflow or a quiet corner where a frightened child was resting. Instead, the sudden blast of upbeat jazz and clinking crystal stopped her dead in her tracks. The grand banquet hall was ablaze with
Chapter 24
Dustin looked at the torn edges of the paper in her hands. There was no hatred in his dark eyes, only a vast, terrifying exhaustion that made her feel as though she were screaming across an ocean."I never asked you not to save a child, Elena," Dustin said, his voice quiet, steady, and devoid of heat. "I only wanted to know whether you could keep the promise you just made.""I am keeping it!" Elena choked out, the tears spilling over her cheeks. "I am going to a hospital, Dustin, not a rendezvous! You know Caleb's sister died saving my life, and you know Lily has nobody else to comfort her right now! Why can't you show an ounce of compassion for once in your life?!"Dustin looked at her, his voice dropping into an absolute hush. "Go then."Those two words felt heavier than any shout.Elena stood paralyzed between the table and the exit, her chest heaving as the weight of the moment crushed down on her. Chapter 23
Elena froze under Dustin’s gaze, the silence in the private dining room suddenly ringing louder than the storm outside. His eyes were terrifyingly clear, stripping away every excuse before she could even voice it. For a fraction of a second, her heart seized with an instinctive panic, warning her that stepping away from this table would cost her everything.Yet the sound of Lily’s breathless wails echoed relentlessly in her mind. Her chest tightened with maternal panic and a surge of defensive self-righteousness. She was an adult, a corporate leader, and a woman who had practically mothered that little girl for three years. How could Dustin sit there and treat a forty-degree fever like a petty loyalty test? A helpless child was burning up in an emergency room, while her husband was demanding that she prove her devotion over a plate of fish."Dustin, please just listen to reason," Elena pleaded, her voice trembling as she gathered her designer bag from the chair.
