CHAPTER 3: FUSION OF FLESH AND SHADOW

“Fuse.”

The word didn’t echo. It consumed. The instant it left Eddy’s lips, the ring burned like molten iron against his skin. A violent surge of energy tore through his veins, raw, invasive, unnatural.

And then, the world fractured. Not visually. But fundamentally. The flame, the darkness, the creature, everything blurred into shifting layers of light and shadow, as though reality itself had been peeled apart and exposed.

Eddy’s breath caught. Then the system spoke again.

The creature was already mid-lunge. Its hollow eyes burned brighter, hungry, furious, aware. “…light… give…”

Eddy didn’t hesitate. “Yes.”

Pain, not sharp, not sudden, but total. It flooded his body all at once, bones, nerves, blood, like something foreign was forcing itself into every inch of his being.

Eddy’s scream tore out of him before he could stop it. “MASTER EDDY!”

The servant’s voice sounded distant—fading—as if the world had begun to pull away from him.

The creature collided with him. But instead of impact,  it merged.

Darkness surged into his body like a tidal wave, Cold, Endless, Hungry. Eddy’s vision snapped to black.

Then, Light returned. But not the same light. Eddy stood still. Breathing. Alive. The mine flickered around him, the mutated flame casting long, distorted shadows across the walls.

But something was wrong. Everything felt… clearer. Too clear. He could hear the faint crackling of the flame behind him.

The slow drip of blood hitting stone. The erratic heartbeat of the servant lying on the ground. And beneath it all, A second rhythm. Not his own. “…interesting…”

Eddy froze. The voice hadn’t come from outside. It came from within. “What…?” he muttered.

His hand trembled slightly as he raised it in front of his face. For a split second, His shadow moved before he did. Then corrected itself. Eddy’s pupils shrank. “…No.”

The servant’s weak voice pulled him back. Eddy turned quickly. The old man was still alive, but barely. Blood soaked his shoulder, spreading slowly across the ground.

The servant stared at him. Not with relief. But with something else. “…your eyes…”

Eddy stilled. “What about them?”

“They…” the man swallowed, voice shaking, “they’re not the same.”

Eddy didn’t respond immediately. Because he could already feel it. Something had changed. Not just his body. His perception.

The darkness no longer felt like an enemy pressing in from all sides. It felt… Close. Familiar. Listening. “…we need to stop the bleeding,” Eddy said, forcing his voice steady.

The servant grabbed his wrist weakly. “Forget me… listen carefully…”

Eddy frowned. “You’re not dying here.”

“That’s not your decision,” the man snapped, coughing. “You don’t understand what you’ve done.”

A faint whisper brushed against Eddy’s mind. You let me in…

His fingers tightened. “I did what I had to.”

“No,” the servant said, eyes sharp despite the pain, “you made a deal without knowing the price.”

Silence fell. Then, the flame flickered violently. Eddy turned. The mutated core pulsed unnaturally, its black-edged fire stretching and shrinking like it was breathing. “That’s new…” he muttered.

The system flickered again.

“Evolution?” Eddy whispered.

Before he could process further, A low rumble shook the mine. Dust fell from the ceiling. The shadows deepened. And from the far end of the tunnel, another sound emerged. Not one. But many.

The servant’s expression darkened instantly. “…we’re too late.”

Eddy’s gaze sharpened. “What is that?”

The answer came before the words did. Shapes. Moving. Dozens. Eyes began to open within the darkness. “…light…”

Eddy’s breath slowed. “This mine…” he said quietly, “it’s not abandoned.”

The servant gave a weak, humorless laugh. “I told you… It was sealed.”

“For what?”

A pause. Then, “For them.”

The ground trembled again. Cracks spread along the walls. The flame flared wildly, then dipped. “They’re coming,” the servant said. “And this time… you can’t fuse your way out of it.”

Eddy didn’t answer. Because the system had already begun to respond.

He ignored it. Focused. Calm. “System,” he said, “initiate multi-fusion.”

The ring burned again. Hotter than before. The flame surged. The walls cracked. And the darkness— Moved. Not toward him. But around him.

Like it was being drawn in. The creatures shrieked. The mine trembled violently. And for a brief, terrifying moment, Everything went silent. Then, the system spoke.
