Chapter 1: The Last Humiliation

Smile, Miss Carter.”

The photographer’s cheerful voice echoed through the Imperial Grand Hotel ballroom.

Flash!

Another photograph captured the city’s newest power couple

Marcus Ashford and Sophia Carter stood beneath an arch of white roses, their fingers intertwined as hundreds of distinguished guests applauded.

Crystal chandeliers bathed the ballroom in warm golden light. A string quartet played softly while waiters glided through the crowd carrying silver trays filled with champagne.

Tonight wasn’t just an engagement party.

It was a celebration of power.

The Ashford family was one of the wealthiest and most influential families in Nova City. Being associated with them meant prestige, opportunity, and influence. Invitations to this banquet had become the most sought-after tickets in the city.

Near the back of the ballroom, unnoticed by almost everyone, stood a young man in a neatly pressed navy-blue suit.

His name was Ethan.

Unlike the other guests, he wore no luxury watch. His shoes had been polished so carefully that no one would guess they were several years old.

His invitation was still clenched tightly in his hand.

The invitation had come from Sophia herself.

“Please come.”

“I don’t want you hearing the news from someone else.”

At the time, Ethan had hoped there was still a chance to save the relationship they had spent three years building.

Now he realized the invitation had never been about hope.

It had been about goodbye.

“…and may their future be filled with love and prosperity!” the master of ceremonies announced.

Thunderous applause filled the room.

Ethan remained still.

Three years.

Three years of birthdays.

Three years of shared dreams.

Three years of believing that love was enough.

Tonight, all of it ended with applause.

“Isn’t that him?”

The whisper came from a nearby table.

“Sophia’s ex-boyfriend.”

“I heard he works at Westbridge Capital.”

“A junior investment strategist.”

“So that’s the man she left?”

“I expected someone more impressive.”

Quiet laughter spread among the guests.

Ethan heard every word.

He had grown used to people judging others by their clothes, job titles, and bank accounts.

His adoptive father had once told him,

“The world will always measure you before it knows you. Don’t let its measurements define your worth.”

Those words had stayed with him long after the old man passed away.

“Ethan.”

He looked up.

Sophia was walking toward him.

She looked breathtaking in a silver evening gown embroidered with tiny crystals that sparkled every time she moved.

For a brief second, Ethan saw not the elegant woman before him, but the university student who used to split instant noodles with him because neither of them could afford dinner.

Back then, they had promised each other that one day they would build a better life together.

Promises, he realized, could expire.

“I’m glad you came,” Sophia said softly.

“I almost didn’t.”

“I know.”

An uncomfortable silence settled between them.

Finally, Sophia spoke.

“My parents never accepted us.”

“I know.”

“They kept saying that love isn’t enough.”

Ethan didn’t answer.

“They wanted someone who could give me security. Someone with influence… someone with a future.”

Her eyes drifted toward Marcus.

“I tried to ignore them.”

“I really did.”

“But after I met Marcus…”

She stopped speaking.

She didn’t need to finish the sentence.

Ethan already understood.

He forced a small smile.

“I hope he makes you happy.”

Sophia blinked.

“That’s it?”

“What else should I say?”

“I thought…”

“You thought I’d beg?”

Her face reddened.

“No.”

“I just thought you’d be angry.”

Ethan looked at the glittering ballroom.

“I’ve learned something over the past few years.”

“You can’t force someone to stay.”

Sophia lowered her head.

“I’m sorry.”

“So am I.”

Before either of them could say another word, a confident voice interrupted.

“So this is Ethan.”

Marcus Ashford approached with three young executives following behind him.

He looked every bit the heir everyone admired.

His tuxedo was tailored to perfection.

His watch alone was worth more than most people earned in a year.

A relaxed smile rested on his face.

Not the smile of a happy man.

The smile of a man completely certain he had already won.

Marcus stopped in front of Ethan.

For a few seconds…

He simply studied him.

Then he smiled.

“I’ve heard quite a lot about you.”

Ethan nodded politely.

“I can’t say the same.”

The executives behind Marcus chuckled.

Marcus didn’t.

Instead, his smile widened.

“I should thank you.”

Ethan raised an eyebrow.

“For what?”

“For teaching Sophia an important lesson.”

“What lesson?”

Marcus slipped an arm around Sophia’s waist.

“That dreams don’t pay bills.”

The surrounding guests laughed.

Sophia looked away, unable to meet Ethan’s eyes.

Marcus took another step forward.

“You work at Westbridge Capital, don’t you?”

“I do.”

“As a junior investment strategist?”

“Yes.”

Marcus nodded thoughtfully.

“So tell me…”

He glanced around the ballroom, making sure everyone was listening.

“How many years would it take you to earn enough money to host a banquet like this?”

Silence spread across the room.

Every eye turned toward Ethan.

He knew exactly what Marcus was trying to do.

Humiliate him.

Break him.

Make him lose control.

Instead, Ethan calmly replied,

“I’ve never measured success by the price of a party.”

For the first time…

Marcus’s smile faltered.

Then it returned.

“But society does.”

Ethan met his gaze without fear.

“Society also remembers how people treat others.”

The laughter stopped.

Even the orchestra seemed quieter.

Marcus stared at him.

Then…

He slowly reached into the inside pocket of his tuxedo.

Marcus pulled out a thick white envelope and held it between two fingers.

He smiled as though he were about to perform a magic trick.

“Do you know what’s inside this?”

Ethan remained silent.

Marcus opened the envelope and removed a stack of crisp hundred-dollar bills.

Gasps echoed around the ballroom.

“There is one hundred thousand dollars here.”

Several guests leaned forward, eager to see what would happen next.

Marcus took two slow steps toward Ethan.

“I’ve heard you’re struggling financially.”

“I also heard your adoptive father left you with debts after his illness.”

Sophia’s eyes widened.

“Marcus…”

He raised a hand, stopping her.

“I’m only trying to help.”

His voice was calm and polite, making his words sound even more insulting.

He looked Ethan straight in the eye.

“I’ll give you every dollar.”

Then…

He let the envelope fall.

It landed on the polished marble floor between them.

The ballroom became deathly silent.

Marcus pointed at it.

“Pick it up.”

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Others quietly lifted their phones, sensing that something unforgettable was about to happen.

Marcus smiled.

“One hundred thousand dollars.”

“That’s probably more money than you’ve ever held in your life.”

“All you have to do…”

“…is bend down.”

Silence.

Everyone waited.

Sophia bit her lower lip.

“Ethan…”

“I’m sorry.”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he calmly looked at the envelope lying on the floor.

Then he looked back at Marcus.

His expression never changed.

“Are you finished?”

Marcus blinked.

“What?”

“You’ve been talking for several minutes.”

“I assumed you had something important to say.”

A few people couldn’t help smiling.

Marcus’s face darkened.

Ethan continued calmly,

“You think money gives you the right to look down on people.”

“It doesn’t.”

“It only reveals who you already are.”

The smile disappeared from Marcus’s face.

His friends stopped laughing.

Even the musicians seemed to pause.

Marcus took another step forward.

“Don’t pretend you’re above this.”

“If I doubled it…”

“…you’d still refuse?”

Ethan answered without hesitation.

“My self-respect isn’t for sale.”

For several long seconds…

No one spoke.

An elderly businessman slowly nodded to himself.

A young waitress standing nearby secretly admired Ethan’s courage.

Sophia felt tears gathering in her eyes.

She suddenly realized something she hadn’t understood before.

The poorest man in the room…

Wasn’t Ethan.

It was the man who believed everything had a price.

Marcus forced another smile.

But this one looked different.

It was cold.

“Dignity won’t pay your rent.”

“No,” Ethan replied.

“But it helps me sleep at night.”

Marcus’s patience finally snapped.

“Get out.”

His voice echoed across the ballroom.

“I don’t want to see your face at my engagement again.”

Ethan looked at Sophia one last time.

“I sincerely hope you find the life you’re looking for.”

Then he turned around…

…and walked toward the exit.

No shouting.

No begging.

No tears.

Just quiet dignity.

As the massive hotel doors opened, a cool breeze swept inside.

Outside…

Dark clouds covered the night sky.

Rain began falling.

Ethan stepped onto the empty pavement and walked away from the hotel without looking back.

Each raindrop soaked his suit.

His heart felt strangely calm.

He had lost the woman he loved.

He had been humiliated before the city’s elite.

And tomorrow…

He still had to find a way to rebuild his life.

Suddenly

The distant roar of powerful engines shattered the silence.

Headlights cut through the rain.

One black Rolls-Royce appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

Until an entire convoy of luxury vehicles surrounded the hotel entrance.

The hotel security guards froze.

Guests rushed toward the glass doors in confusion.

Every car stopped at the same time.

The doors opened in perfect unison.

More than twenty men in black suits stepped out.

Each stood with military precision.

An elderly gentleman with silver hair slowly emerged from the lead vehicle.

His tailored suit was immaculate despite the rain.

His eyes searched desperately…

Until they found Ethan.

The old man’s body trembled.

Tears filled his eyes.

He took several slow steps forward.

Then…

To everyone’s disbelief…

He knelt on one knee.

Every bodyguard knelt with him.

Every chauffeur lowered his head.

The entire entrance fell silent.

The old man looked up at Ethan, his voice shaking with emotion.

“Young Master Ethan Ashford…”

He lowered his head.

“After twenty-five years…”

“We’ve finally found you.”
