The next morning, Levi’s flight landed in Italy and he reported immediately to the Eastern Front Command Headquarters in Germany.

At the lounge sat a man poring over maps and charts.

“You’re late. And you look like you just rolled out of a charity bin.”

Levi said nothing at first. The voice was familiar, but the face was a blur. His mind scrambled for recognition.

The man finally looked up with icy blue eyes, hawk nose and medals weighing down both shoulders. It was General Griggs, his father-in-law. Or rather, former father-in-law.

The General narrowed his eyes. “Levi?”

“Ah,” Levi muttered softly, voice deadpan. “Took me a second. My bad.”

General Griggs gave a dry laughter. “This got to be the joke of the century. Tell me, what are you doing here? Couldn’t keep your desk job? Or is the jewelry shop closed today?”

Levi stood still and calm, he had expected this.

“I’m here on recommendation, sir.”

Griggs laughed and turned to his desk. “What a joke. They’re recommending beggars now?”

Before Levi could respond, Jennifer Griggs in a navy-blue dress; and Maurice Langre strode in. Jennifer’s laughter rang out the moment she saw Levi.

“No way,” she said, eyes wide. “You’re here? What are you doing in Italy, Levi? Cleaning floors?”

Maurice smirked with crossed arms. “Looks like he lost his way or might be waiting for someone.”

Levi met their eyes, unfazed. “I’m here on direct recommendation from the Baron.”

Jennifer was trying hard to contain her laughter. “Please. Recommendation? For what, Levi? Floor duties?”

“Wait, wait, hold on,” Maurice scoffed, his voice echoing through the polished lounge. “Does your Baron know that you're as useless as letter k in knife?”

Levi simply smiled.

General Griggs turned to Maurice. “Maybe the army’s so desperate, they figured an ex-husband with no tactical skills should command the Eastern Front.

Levi took a quiet breath. “I didn’t come here to argue, sir.”

His eyes narrowed. “Look, it’d be pathetic if the press caught wind that the General’s daughter’s ex-husband is now a wandering foot soldier begging for relevance. Think of General Griggs’ reputation.”

Levi frowned slightly and stepped to the side, but Maurice grabbed his shoulder.

“I’m serious, Levi. Let’s avoid a media disaster.” He reached into his coat and pulled out a sleek debit card. With a mocking smile, he slapped it against Levi’s chest. “Here. I’ll transfer some money to you each month as welfare. Just... stay invisible.”

Levi looked down at the card, then up at Maurice, then laughed and pushed the card away. “Keep it. I don’t take handouts from people I beneath me.”

“Beneath you?” Maurice was bewilded.

“God, Levi,” General Griggs groaned. “You are always delusional. That’s why it never worked between you and my daughter. Look at you.” He scanned him up from head to toe. “This is the life you chose, and I’m glad my daughter walked away.”

Before Levi could respond, a female secretary in black suite rushed over. “General Griggs, mister Maurice, Miss Griggs,” she said breathlessly. “You’re requested in the command room.”

They turned to follow her but the secretary suddenly blocked Levi with a stiff arm.

“Not you, sir,” she said, barely glancing at him. “This is a high-clearance meeting.”

Maurice tried to stiffle his laughter. “See? Even the staff can smell irrelevance.”

Levi said nothing. He simply stepped back and watched them enter the command room.

Just then, the double doors burst open and General Yugoslav one of the most decorated strategic minds of the Eastern Front, strode out, a phone pressed to his ear and his eyes scanned the lounge.

“Yes… I’m on it,” Yugoslav spoke into the phone. “Of course we’re not keeping him waiting on purpose. We just… we don’t see him anywhere.”

The phone crackled and paused.

“You mean the mafialord is already in this room?...which room exactly?” Yugoslav barked into the phone.

“No, no… There's no one fitting the description here. I'm inside the lounge now…Nothing, we checked…”

Levi stepped forward, hands extended. “General Yugoslav?”

Yugoslav turned toward the voice and lowered the phone.

“…Yes?”

Levi offered a handshake. “Levi Sheldon. Almighty mafialord. Newly Assigned to the Eastern front.”

“And what about him?”

“I am the one!”

Yugoslav’s jaw twitched. He glanced at Levi from head to toe and bursted out in laughter.

“Kid, I know a mafialord when I see one. If you want to get busy, pick those folders and follow me inside.”

Yugoslav motioned to a handful of folders in a corner, Levi picked them and followed him into the command room.

Inside, long oaken tables overflowed with documents, city maps, satellite feeds, and communication arrays.

General Griggs sat near the digital feed, his face curled in an imperious frown. Jennifer sat beside him, elegant and cruelly poised. Maurice was whispering to another officer, eyes darting like poison.

As Levi stepped in, heads turned and a hush fell like heavy curtains.

“What is this?” Maurice was surprised. “Did he sneak in to fetch coffee?”

A senior general named Harry, tapped a large map projected on the screen. “We need to push through Piedmont before nightfall,” he said. “If Bonanno and Gambino’s buyers arrive tomorrow, Hogano's wife will be gone. Sold off.”

Griggs leaned forward. “Reports?”

“This is a classified mission, sir. We can't risk our operations flying into the open.”

Griggs askes. “Do we have enough men to save Hogano's wife?”

There was silence.

“NO.”

Jennifer's hearthrob, Maurice leaned over to General Griggs.

“How much did you say Hogano is paying us for this extraction?”

“A hundred million Dollars.”

Everyone's jaw dropped. Earth paused, heartbeats paused, even breathing paused.

“But why does this Extraction look impossible?” someone asked.

“Bonanno and Gambino are one of the most powerful cartel families in Italy and Europe. They're untouchable because they control the military and economy.”

“Don't forget, the terrain where Hogano's wife is held captive is so jagged and almost impenetrable.” Yogoslav added.

Everyone nodded. They faced a major problem now, no other tactic worked and they were at a crossroad.

Suddenly, commotion was heard outside and a young officer entered, soaked in sweat.

“Sir! Generals!” the young man shouted, voice nearly cracking, “The buyers have arrived!”

Chairs scraped as everyone stood in panic.

“You must be Levi” The young lady said without dropping the pistol. She pulled back her veil to reveal a blond hair which had been clipped to perfection. “My husband, Hogano sent you.” She continued. “And… you're Hogano's wife?” “Yes. Call me Deborita.” “Hello Deborita,” Levi nudged. “Would you mind pointing the nozzle of the gun elsewhere.” “You're not welcome here,” she played with the trigger. “Go back to my husband and tell him Deborita is not coming back.” Levi's jaw dropped, what typa’ game is this? “You were kidnapped …” “I ran away with Bonanno, not kidnapped.” Levi leaned back. Deborita must be high on something. “Come lady, there's no time for this bullshit. Let's move.” Deborita fired a warning shot and it ricocheted on the ground before him. “Why did you run away from Hogano?” “I was married to my husband on contract; and along the line I got pregnant. So when the contract marriage ended, he still wanted us to be together.” “But you declined?” “Yes,” Her f

“TARGET IN RANGE!” The radio on his dashboard called out as his assault boat glided through the waves like knife in water. Their plan was to wait at dock for Bonanno and Gambino to respond to the false alarm at 0600 hours before they infiltrate and rescue the kidnapped hostage. To his left, General Griggs' older boat sped through, and behind him, Maurice piloted his own, rough-edged but armed. They were minutes away from 0600 hours. Static crackled in the comms. “Everyone hold position,” came the voice of General Yugoslav from command HQ. General Griggs tapped his radio. “Say again?” “I do not copy, I repeat, I do not copy. What is going on, General?” Maurice roared into his comms. “Hold position, Charlie. We are receiving interference from the Communication system.” “Copy that.” Levi responded. “Is that a problem?” Maurice responded through his comms. There was a brief pause. “Charlie, Oscar, 105. Your coordinates have been compromised, I repeat your coordinates have be

“Enlighten us, Hector Moreau, why sneak into Kritiano alone? No guard, no backup, nothing?” “What? Were you expecting me to ring a siren or sound a gong everywhere to announce my presence?” “As a mafialord and right hand man to Bonanno and Gambino, we didn't expect an errand boy to capture you so easily.” “Well,” Hector Moreau swirled confidently on the chair he sat on. “I came alone because my love interest said she’d only believe my feelings for her if I came to her... alone. No guards, no drama. Just me and my bravery.” General Griggs sneered. “Well asi it stands, it seems your bravery had been dragged through the mud and you've landed in our den.” Hector smiled, like a criminal who knew he had a badass judge as a brother. “So the infamous mafialord threw himself into the lions den just to prove himself to a woman?” Hector turned his head lazily. “I see, you've never been in love. I understand.” That question got a deep smirk from General Griggs who walked slowly around th

SCRREEEEEECH!! That was the sound of tyres on tarmac as Levi pulled up at the KRITIANO party with his $10.2 million Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire. The world stood still as heads turned and whispers erupted on every corner. “Damn!... Who owns that?” “Man! That is blindingly expensive!” “Whoa! That's a whole mansion on wheels!” Levi stepped down from the car with a suit as sharp as Hercules’ sword. He adjusted the tie on his collar and moved with measured steps into the party hall. Somewhere, an ebony officer whistled and leaned over her friend to gossip. He found an empty table and slipped behind it, looking at his wristwatch. “LEVI?” He turned. Jennifer Griggs stood in a silk navy-blue gown, smiling warmly, confidence painted her face like mayonnaise. Her perfume was thick, feminine and expensive. Levi stood instinctively. God, this lady better be Emilia Yugoslav. He prayed hard. He hated this part of himself where the disease made him forget faces and question every smile, e

When Levi arrived, the gala had already began in full swing. He was dressed in a closed necked camoflauge shirt. And as he made his way through the crowd of dancers; a hand, soft and cold, gently gripped and pulled him aside. “Levi, there you are!” said a soft feminine voice. He turned to face her; and oh GOD! She was beautiful, the kind of beauty that would make Angels wish they were humans. “I insisted on meeting you,” she said, breathing a little excitedly. “My name is Emilia Yugoslav, daughter of General Yugoslav. My father spoke highly of you today.” Levi cracked a smile. He didn't know the General had a daughter. Her auburn hair was decently pinned back and her gown, elegantly floral, such that it swirled with pride whenever she turned. “Did you really suggest that strategy which my Dad and other Generals speak so much about?” “Well…” Levi caressed the back of his neck. Emilia laughed, warm and cascading. “My father called it the most tactical move he had seen so far.

“How ready are the men?” “Someone please say something, TIME IS RUNNING OUT!!” Those were General Yugoslav’s words as he scanned the men in the command room. General Griggs stood by the table, eyes hard but unfocused. In all his decades in uniform, the reality at the moment had turned his mouth dry. Across from him, men scratched their temples and brows the same way a student scratches his head during a test. No one spoke. Not Maurice. Not even Jennifer. They were Hogano's last hope. They couldn't afford to lose now. Levi stood in the corner, half-shadowed, eyes locked on the large digital board. He saw what they couldn’t see. A flaw, obvious to him but invisible to the untrained eyes. He took a step forward. “I would say we stall the transaction for a while and pose as the buyers.” Levi said calmly. “That way, we make a clean in-and-out without raising suspicion.” General Griggs turned, jaw tightening. “You again?” Maurice scoffed, breaking the tense quiet with an eye-ro
