Chapter 12:

The banquet hall fell into silence, the only sound was the slow music playing. Dozens of confused gazes shifted between the trembling old man and the direction he was staring at.

Broken pieces of glass glittered across the floor while wine slowly spread between them.

“Mr. Gao? Are you alright?”

“What happened?”

Mr. Gao was one of the most influential figures in Kairen city. He was acquainted with one of the powerful families in the city—the Mori family.

They knew that Gao was not the kind of man to lose composure over anything. Whatever he had seen tonight must have shaken him deeply.

Seeing him on the floor alarmed the guests and as they rushed towards him with concern, Gao was unable to speak.

He looked like he had seen a ghost. His eyes remained fixed on Riven.

“Mr. Gao, who is alive?” Someone asked, finally bringing him back from the depths of his thoughts.

Gao blinked twice and coughed slightly. Realizing that so many eyes were on him, he stood up, looking away from Riven as he adjusted his stance.

The panic that was previously visible in his eyes suddenly vanished, replaced by a mask of composure.

“Nothing,” he said with a hoarse voice, staring at the little crowd he had attracted to himself. “I had thought I had seen an old acquaintance but I was wrong.”

With a small, uncomfortable smile and nod, he walked out of the hall but not without casting another look at Riven, who looked unbothered, eating plate after plate.

Gao looked around the courtyard. The cold air whistled around him as he hurriedly took out his phone.

“Young master Dai…”

His voice shook as he drew in a deep breath.

“The surviving Wei heir…. I found him.”

Back inside the banquet hall, the strange incident involving Mr. Gao gradually faded into the background as the guests resumed their conversations.

However, not everyone had moved on.

Alyssa stood near the refreshments table with a darkened expression. She still hadn’t gotten over the way Orion had ignored her.

The laughter and stares from the guests felt like needles pickling against her skin. Her fingers tightened around the stem of her wine glass.

“Still thinking about President Zhao?”

Elias appeared beside her with a glass of champagne in hand.

Alyssa shot him an irritated look, gulping down her wine in one go without answering.

Elias let out a scoff. “He ignored you alright. Move on. There are many influential men in this place, didn’t catch the bigger fish, look for another to prey on.”

“You talk like it’s so easy to do.”

“It is.”

At that moment, his attention shifted to a group of young men who were standing a few feet away from them. At the center stood an incredibly handsome man dressed in an expensive blue suit.

Jake Wang.

The heir of the Wang Family and one of the most sought after bachelors in Kairen City.

Elias recognized him instantly.

The Wang family controlled several transportation systems in and out of the province. If the Chen family could establish a connection with them, they would soar high in the business world.

“Talking about influential men, there’s one standing just right in front of us,” Elias said with a smirk.

Alyssa raised a brow and followed his train of sight towards Jack who sipped from his glass while elegantly giving a nod to one of his companions.

A faint smile appeared on her face.

Compared to Orion, Jake wasn’t inferior in the slightest way. If she could establish a connection with the Wang family, it wouldn’t be a complete loss at all!

Elias noticed the look on his sister’s face and chuckled.

“Come on, I will introduce you.”

The siblings walked towards Jake and his friends and Elias immediately stretched out his hand while bowing slightly respectfully.

“Young Master Wang.”

The bickering between the friends stopped as Jake stared down at the duo in front him and at Elias’s hand. He looked back at his face with a raised brow.

“And you are?”

Elias’s jaw twitched as he quickly retracted his hand back.

“Elias Chen.”

Disgust seemed to flash across Jake’s face and this didn’t go unnoticed by Elias.

“The Chen family?”

Jake’s gaze swept between them lazily.

“I didn’t expect Young Master Zhao’s invitation to be this… inclusive.”

That landed straight as an insult and Jake’s friends chuckled. Alyssa could only force out a laugh as she said, “Young Master Wang must be joking.”

“Do I look like I’m joking?”

Alyssa went red instantly, she and her brother exchanged worried glances but at that moment, Jake’s gaze flickered to the Chen’s table.

In his eyes flashed a hint of interest and lust as they landed right on Odessa.

“Who’s that?” He asked no one in particular.

His friends also followed his line of sight and they were mesmerized.

“Such a beauty. I have never seen her before.”

“She’s so beautiful.”

Alyssa’s heart immediately sank as her eyes shone red with anger and jealousy. Once again, Odessa had stolen the limelight from her.

Less than an hour ago, she had been ignored by Orion and now Jake hadn’t even looked at her twice before asking about Odessa.

It’s like she didn’t even exist.

Elias also follows Jake’s gaze and he frowned. But a thought seems to have crossed his mind making his face ease a bit.

He had brought Alyssa here to gain the attention of Jake to get benefits but instead it turned out to be Odessa the young master was captivated with.

Whether Jake liked Alyssa or Odessa didn’t matter at this point, what mattered was a corporation with the Wang family. If he could get it, his grandmother will definitely grant him more benefits and make him the CEO of the company.

“She is seated at your table,” Jake continued. “Is she a member of your family?”

“Yes, she’s my cousin.”

“Interesting,” Jake said, taking a sip of his wine.

Alyssa instantly shot a confused look at Elias.

“What are you doing?” She whispered.

However, Elias ignored her. The only thing on his mind was getting closer to the Wang's heir.

“Bring her over.”
