Today is the day he and Lana Hayes get their marriage license.

Nine-thirty in the morning. Ten o'clock. Eleven o'clock. Still nothing from her.

Dane Mercer paced the hard concrete steps outside the city hall. The morning sun was getting hot, buthis blood felt ice cold. He stared down at his phone screen.

Twenty messages sent. Zero replies. What was happening? Maybe she was touching herself up to look beautiful. He thought as he could not help but smile to himself.

He tried to send Hayes another message to add to other previous message, he had sent to her asking where she was, they were marked as read. She saw them. He noticed the last ten messages did not even go through. A bright red exclamation mark sat next to every single one.

Lana had blocked his number. What was happening?

Today was the day they were supposed to get their marriage license. In five full years of dating, Lana had never once been on time. Not for his birthday, not for their anniversaries, not for anything.

But this time was supposed to be different. Just yesterday, Lana was the one who looked him in the eyes and suggested they finally get married. Dane was so excited he could not sleep for a single second all night. He had carefully packed all his documents into his worn-out backpack. He had arrived thirty minutes early.

He waited for an hour and a half, looking like a fool.

A bitter smile crossed Dane's face. He slowly unzipped his bag and tucked the marriage documents inside. He was just about to turn around and walk to the bus stop when his phone buzzed violently in his hand.

It was a text message from a college classmate.

Dude, Take a look at this. Your girlfriend just said yes to someone else's proposal at the girls' dormitory entrance.

Dane heart stopped taking hair. Below the text was a high-resolution photo.

In the picture, Lana was wearing a beautiful white dress. She was smiling brighter than she ever smiled at him. She was holding a massive bouquet of red roses and accepting a giant diamond ring from a man in an expensive custom suit. A huge crowd of students was cheering around them.

Furious, Dane did not wait for the bus. He ran to the street, flagged down a taxi, and paid the driver extra to speed straight back to the university.

The entrance to the girls' dormitory was packed. Hundreds of students were gathered around, clapping and taking videos on their phones.

Dane shoved his way roughly through the crowd. "Move!" he barked.

He broke through to the front circle and locked eyes with Lana. The diamond ring was already sparkling on her finger. The man next to her had his arm wrapped tightly around her waist.

"Why Lana?" Dane demanded. His voice cut through the loud cheers, making the crowd go dead silent. "Why did you say yes to someone else's proposal? Weren't we supposed to meet at ten in the morning today to get our marriage license?"

People in the crowd started whispering and pointing at Dane. He was wearing faded jeans and a plain white t-shirt. Compared to the wealthy man standing next to Lana, Dane looked like a beggar.

Lana did not look guilty at all. Instead, she crossed her arms and sneered at him.

"You are just a poor student," Lana said loudly, making sure everyone could hear. "I am the heir of the Hayes Family. My family is wealthy and powerful. Why would I ever get a marriage license with a loser like you?"

She proudly leaned against the man in the suit. "Cade is the only son of the nation's richest man. He is the heir of the Mercer Family. He has absolute power and limitless money. He is the fiancé I truly desire. You are nothing compared to him."

Dane stared at her, then let out a low, dark laugh to himself.

The heir of the Mercer Family? Dane was the true heir of the Mercer Family.

"Yes, that is him," a businessman replied, his tone dripping with absolute disgust. "He is the disgrace. Do you not remember the massive scandal? They say he was the one who drugged Berry.""I heard the rumors," another woman gasped quietly, her eyes wide with scandalous delight. "They say he slipped something into her drink at a private estate party. He ruined her reputation completely. His family threw him into the streets to rot because of it. What is a monster like him doing back in high society?"The dark, ugly rumors echoed loudly enough for everyone in the circle to hear. The crowd stared at Dane with overwhelming revulsion, treating him like a convicted criminal who had just crawled out of a sewer.Bary smiled smugly, feeling entirely vindicated by the crowd's reaction. He stepped closer to Dane. "Do you hear that? Everyone knows what you are. You are a disgusting criminal. Security will be here in a minute to drag you out by your hair."Dane did not look at Bary. Berry stopped three feet in front of him. Her chest was heaving, her perfectly applied makeup unable to hide the bright, flushed red of her cheeks. She looked at his calm, entirely unbothered face, and it only made her angrier."I called your name," Berry demanded, her voice shaking with a mix of fury and something deeply vulnerable. "I know you heard me. Why are you running away? Why do you constantly avoid me like a plague every single time we are in the same city?""Hello, Berry," Dane replied, his voice painfully polite and entirely devoid of emotion. "I am not avoiding you. I am simply very busy tonight. Excuse me, I have urgent matters to attend to elsewhere."He gave her a brief, dismissive nod and stepped to the side, attempting to walk past her. Before Dane could take two steps, a man violently threw his arm out, physically blocking Dane’s path.It was one of Berry’s most desperate sycophants—a young, arrogant heir named Bary, dressed in a bespoke navy-blue tuxedo. Lana was clinging tightly to Cade's arm, dressed in a sparkling, violently expensive designer gown that caught the flash of the estate's lights. She was only able to attend this highly exclusive banquet by riding on Cade's coattails. After the Mercer Group had publicly terminated her business contract, her reputation had taken a massive hit. She desperately needed to be seen at Patriarch Sterling's party to prove to the city that she was still a powerful player, and Cade was her only ticket inside.Cade stood tall next to her, wearing a sharp white tuxedo with a smug, deeply arrogant grin plastered across his face.Lana looked Dane up and down, her eyes entirely filled with malicious glee.
