Today is the day he and Lana Hayes get their marriage license.
Nine-thirty in the morning. Ten o'clock. Eleven o'clock. Still nothing from her.
Dane Mercer paced the hard concrete steps outside the city hall. The morning sun was getting hot, buthis blood felt ice cold. He stared down at his phone screen.
Twenty messages sent. Zero replies. What was happening? Maybe she was touching herself up to look beautiful. He thought as he could not help but smile to himself.
He tried to send Hayes another message to add to other previous message, he had sent to her asking where she was, they were marked as read. She saw them. He noticed the last ten messages did not even go through. A bright red exclamation mark sat next to every single one.
Lana had blocked his number. What was happening?
Today was the day they were supposed to get their marriage license. In five full years of dating, Lana had never once been on time. Not for his birthday, not for their anniversaries, not for anything.
But this time was supposed to be different. Just yesterday, Lana was the one who looked him in the eyes and suggested they finally get married. Dane was so excited he could not sleep for a single second all night. He had carefully packed all his documents into his worn-out backpack. He had arrived thirty minutes early.
He waited for an hour and a half, looking like a fool.
A bitter smile crossed Dane's face. He slowly unzipped his bag and tucked the marriage documents inside. He was just about to turn around and walk to the bus stop when his phone buzzed violently in his hand.
It was a text message from a college classmate.
Dude, Take a look at this. Your girlfriend just said yes to someone else's proposal at the girls' dormitory entrance.
Dane heart stopped taking hair. Below the text was a high-resolution photo.
In the picture, Lana was wearing a beautiful white dress. She was smiling brighter than she ever smiled at him. She was holding a massive bouquet of red roses and accepting a giant diamond ring from a man in an expensive custom suit. A huge crowd of students was cheering around them.
Furious, Dane did not wait for the bus. He ran to the street, flagged down a taxi, and paid the driver extra to speed straight back to the university.
The entrance to the girls' dormitory was packed. Hundreds of students were gathered around, clapping and taking videos on their phones.
Dane shoved his way roughly through the crowd. "Move!" he barked.
He broke through to the front circle and locked eyes with Lana. The diamond ring was already sparkling on her finger. The man next to her had his arm wrapped tightly around her waist.
"Why Lana?" Dane demanded. His voice cut through the loud cheers, making the crowd go dead silent. "Why did you say yes to someone else's proposal? Weren't we supposed to meet at ten in the morning today to get our marriage license?"
People in the crowd started whispering and pointing at Dane. He was wearing faded jeans and a plain white t-shirt. Compared to the wealthy man standing next to Lana, Dane looked like a beggar.
Lana did not look guilty at all. Instead, she crossed her arms and sneered at him.
"You are just a poor student," Lana said loudly, making sure everyone could hear. "I am the heir of the Hayes Family. My family is wealthy and powerful. Why would I ever get a marriage license with a loser like you?"
She proudly leaned against the man in the suit. "Cade is the only son of the nation's richest man. He is the heir of the Mercer Family. He has absolute power and limitless money. He is the fiancé I truly desire. You are nothing compared to him."
Dane stared at her, then let out a low, dark laugh to himself.
The heir of the Mercer Family? Dane was the true heir of the Mercer Family.

Mara trembled violently, but she forced herself to speak. "Leave me alone! I never agreed to marry you!""You didn't have to agree," Vaughn sneered, stepping closer. "Your stepmother and your own father agreed for you. They eagerly took a ten-million-dollar contract from my company in exchange for your body. You belong to me!"Hearing this, Lana burst into cruel laughter from the sidelines."You are so lucky, Mara!" Lana mocked loudly, absolutely thrilled to see her sister suffer. "Vaughn Croft's family is quite wealthy! That is much better than trying to run a business on your own! Just go with him and be a good little pet!"Vaughn stopped. He slowly turned his head toward the sound of Lana's voice. His eyes darkened with absolute, murderous hatred. He remembered the excruciating pain of his bones snapping. Although his underground family was slightly inferior in wealth to the Hayes Family, he was his father's only son. His hands had been completely crippled. He was permanently disab

The blinding white spotlight hit the center of the main stage. The massive banquet hall was completely silent, everyone holding their breath to see the legendary owner of Mercer Group. But it wasn't a mysterious billionaire who stepped into the light. It was Dane.Wearing his cheap, faded clothes, Dane walked slowly and confidently down the aisle, right past the rows of stunned billionaires.Lana gasped, her eyes practically bulging out of her skull. She lunged forward and hissed, "Dane! What the hell are you doing?! Step back! They called for the boss of the company, not a broke beggar like you!"Cade grabbed Dane’s sleeve, trying to aggressively yank him back. "Are you insane?! How dare you pretend to be the boss of Mercer Group in front of everyone? You are going to get us all killed!"Dane easily brushed Cade’s hand away without even looking at him. He completely ignored their frantic whispers and kept walking. As Dane reached the steps to the stage, Paige, the terrifying CEO of M
Chapter 13
The entire banquet hall was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Hundreds of the wealthiest, most powerful people in the city stared at the woman in the tailored white executive suit.Paige stood tall, her presence radiating absolute, terrifying authority. She was the public-facing head of Mercer Group. Every single massive financial decision, every billion-dollar acquisition, and every single contract in the company required her personal signature. When Manager Kirk saw her face, all the blood instantly drained from his body. His knees began to shake uncontrollably.Kirk was just a mid-level manager who owned a fraction of a percent of shares. Compared to Paige, he was nothing more than an ant. He had absolutely no idea she was going to attend the banquet tonight. She rarely appeared at these public events."P-President Paige," Kirk stuttered, his voice cracking. He immediately lowered his head, not daring to look her in the eye. "I... I didn't know you would be here."Paige ignored h
Chapter 12
Dane demanded the moment the call connected, "Director Paige, is there a mistake in the partner list for today's banquet? I instructed the butler to contact you yesterday to remove Nexus Group."Lana laughed loudly from across the hall. "Who is Director Paige? I've never even heard that name. You're up to your fraudulent tricks again, Dane. Pretending to have connections you don't have."Cade felt something was off. Dane was far too confident. He had a nagging feeling that Dane's presence today boded ill for them.Cade whispered to Lana, "Let's drive him away. He used a fake VIP invitation to get in today, relying on some low-level connection. If we expose his true colors, the boss of Mercer Group will surely applaud us."Lana marched over and found Manager Kirk. "They used fake VIP invitations to get in earlier. Both the second male lead and I witnessed it."Kirk believed them without question. He hated Dane for making his nephew look bad. Kirk immediately called the security guards,
Chapter 11
Mara stepped back, her eyes wide with bewilderment. She could not understand how Lana and Cade were standing inside the exclusive banquet hall. She had just watched the security guards kick them out.Lana strutted forward, her glittering gown catching the crystal chandelier light. She looked at Mara like a hawk looking at an injured mouse."Surprised to see me?" Lana taunted, her voice dripping with venom. "Did you really think a lowly director like Paige could keep me out? We entered with the personal help of Manager Kirk. He is a senior executive at Mercer Group. His authority is infinitely higher than whoever is helping you."Lana crossed her arms, a triumphant smirk on her face. "Manager Kirk already gave us the inside scoop. The massive ten-million-dollar contract tonight will definitely be mine."In reality, Manager Kirk was nothing more than a mid-level pencil pusher. He had secretly peeked at a confidential document on Director Paige's desk earlier that day. He had seen the na

Lana's face burned with extreme embarrassment. She gritted her teeth so hard they nearly cracked. She was the supposedly mighty heir of the Hayes Family; kneeling in the dirt would destroy her reputation forever.Cade quickly stepped in front of Lana, sweating profusely. "Hey, don't be so aggressive," he said nervously to Dane. "It was just a casual remark between friends. Is it really necessary to take it so seriously?"Dane shrugged casually, but his eyes were ice cold. "It doesn't matter to me. I can't physically force you to honor your own bet. But with so many people watching, and so many cell phones recording... your story will definitely be on the front page of the entertainment news headlines tomorrow morning. 'Hayes Family Heir Refuses to Pay Debts.' Sounds catchy."Dane chuckled lightly.Bree respectfully extended her arm toward the glass doors. "Please, sir, miss. Let me invite you inside."Dane placed his hand gently on the small of Mara's back and guided her through the g
