Rachel froze just inside the CEO’s office, her lips parting as if to speak, but no words came. The air was thick with power, and for the first time in her life, she realized she had never really known the man she married.
Lucas didn’t stand. He let the silence crawl, relishing her discomfort. “You’re… you’re the CEO?” she finally managed, voice cracking.
Lucas leaned forward slightly. “Of Sebastian Holdings. Of Black Tower. Of the company you mocked for years and claimed could never afford your taste in handbags.”
Rachel looked pale. “You… lied to me. For five years!”
He raised an eyebrow. “And what were you doing all those five years, Rachel? Loving me? Supporting me? Standing by your vows?”
“I—”
“Don’t answer,” he said sharply, his voice like a whip. “Because we both know the truth. You weren’t my wife. You were an opportunist waiting for a better deal.”
Her knees buckled, and she slowly sank into the leather chair across from him, trembling. “This has to be a prank. You were broke. You”
“Lived like I was broke,” Lucas said, voice low. “Because I needed to know who you were without the money. I needed to know if I was marrying a woman or a leech.”
Rachel’s eyes welled with tears. “Lucas, please…”
“No,” he said. “You don’t get to call me that anymore. To you, I’m Mr. Sebastian. Your employer, for the next three hours, at most.”
She gasped. “You’re firing me?”
“Oh, not just firing you.” He stood, slowly walking to the window behind him. The skyline stretched out before them like a kingdom. “I’m making sure you can never use this company to rise again.
You see, Rachel… I’m not just ending our marriage. I’m erasing your existence from every ladder you ever tried to climb.”
The door opened. Helena walked in, tall, radiant, dressed in a pristine white power suit. She carried a manila folder and a faint smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“Helena Blackwood,” Lucas said without turning around. “My fiancée. And your new supervisor.”
Rachel blinked. “Fiancée?”
Helena smiled sweetly. “Oh, don’t look so shocked. He proposed last night, the same night you tossed divorce papers at him like he was dirt.”
Lucas turned back to face them both. “Helena will be overseeing your formal dismissal. HR will escort you out within the hour. You may keep the shoes, they’re knockoffs anyway.”
Rachel’s lip quivered. “Lucas, you don’t mean this. I—I was angry. I didn’t know”
He leaned in slightly. “And that’s the point. You never wanted to know. You never cared.”
Helena placed the folder gently on the desk. “Your company email is already locked. Your access card has been deactivated. We’ve taken the liberty of seizing your pending bonus as compensation for breach of conduct. You’ll be hearing from our legal team shortly.”
Rachel stood up suddenly, her voice shrill. “You think you can treat me like this? I gave you five years of my life!”
Lucas stepped closer, his expression ice-cold. “And I gave you the chance to be the wife of the richest man alive. You chose to cheat, insult, and betray. Now, you can live with the consequences.”
Tears streamed down Rachel’s face, mascara smudging under her eyes. “This isn’t over…”
Lucas gave her a long, hard stare. “It is for you.”
Lucas stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his private penthouse, cradling a glass of aged bourbon. The lights of the city shimmered like stars beneath him.
Behind him, Helena walked in quietly, holding a small blue box. “You okay?” she asked.
Lucas nodded slowly. “Strange day.”
“You did the right thing.”
He looked at her. “I waited so long to tell her. I thought maybe… maybe there was still something worth saving.”
Helena set the box down. “There is. But not with her.”
Lucas opened the box. Inside, a small sonogram photo stared back at him. The tiny outline of a child, His child.
He stared at it for a long time before Helena spoke again. “I found out last night. I wanted to wait until the divorce was finalized before I told you.”
Lucas took a long breath. “Thank you… for standing by me.”
Helena stepped closer, her hand brushing his. “Always.”
He clenched the photo tightly. “Then let’s do it.”
“Do what?”
“Everything,” he said. “Rachel thought she could destroy me. Now, I’ll destroy the entire version of me that ever loved her. I want the world to know what happens when you betray a Sebastian.”
In a shadowed lounge across town, Rachel sat at a bar, disheveled and panicking. She gripped her phone, calling Darren over and over. Voicemail.
Then a familiar voice behind her made her blood run cold. “You look like you’ve had a rough day.”
She turned and found Darren with his arm around another woman. “What are you doing?” Rachel hissed. “We had a plan”
He shrugged. “Plan changed. I found someone a little more… connected.”
Her face fell. “You bastard.”
He smirked. “No, Rachel. I’m a climber. And you? You’re the bottom of the ladder now.”
He walked away, leaving her humiliated, abandoned, and lost.
As she sat alone, eyes glazed over, she had no idea that the worst was still coming, Because Lucas Sebastian… was just getting started.
