Chapter 1
Chapter One: The Day of the Reveal
The morning sun peeked through the cracked blinds of a two-bedroom apartment that smelled like burned coffee and unspoken resentment. Lucas Sebastian stood in the kitchen, still in the same old T-shirt his wife constantly nagged him to throw away.
His hands trembled slightly as he poured a fresh cup of coffee, not from the old drip machine, but from the gleaming espresso maker he secretly replaced last week. She hadn’t noticed. She never did. Today was the day
For five long years, Lucas had played the part of a broke, average man, driving an old Honda Civic, living on takeout noodles, and coming home to a wife who rolled her eyes every time he spoke.
But behind the scenes, he controlled empires. He could buy entire cities if he wanted. And for five years, he chose not to. He wanted her love, unfiltered, undriven by money, Instead, he got humiliation.
“Are you going to just stand there or are you going to clean this damn place before I get back from work?” Rachel’s voice cut through the air like broken glass. She walked past him in designer heels she claimed she “borrowed” from a friend, her perfume suffocating the small space between them.
Lucas turned, heart pounding, rehearsing the words in his head. "Rachel… there’s something I need to tell you."
But before he could speak, she threw a stack of papers onto the kitchen counter with a loud slap. “Sign the damn divorce papers, Lucas,” she snapped, not even looking at him. “I’m done pretending like this isn’t a waste of my life.”
Lucas stared at the documents. His name was printed on the top right corner, Lucas Sebastian, along with all the legal language confirming that, after today, they’d be strangers. Just like that.
His chest tightened. Not because he was heartbroken, but because of the cruel irony, He had everything planned: a dinner reservation at a five-star restaurant, a limousine waiting outside, and an entire suite booked for their second honeymoon in Santorini.
He was going to tell her everything, Tell her who he really was, Tell her she never had to worry again.
“Don’t look so shocked,” Rachel continued, snatching her purse from the counter. “I met someone else. A real man. Not some pathetic loser playing house. Do yourself a favor and don’t embarrass yourself begging.”
She paused at the door and glanced over her shoulder. “Oh, and one more thing, I’m finally going to have dinner somewhere that doesn’t have coupons.”
The door slammed shut, Lucas didn’t move. Not for several minutes, The silence that followed wasn’t peaceful. It was electric. His hand hovered over the divorce papers, his expression unreadable. Then slowly, almost with reverence, he picked up the pen.
With one clean stroke, he signed his name, And with that, the mask began to fall.
Two Hours Later – Downtown Penthouse, Black Tower... The elevator doors opened with a soft chime, revealing the 79th floor of Black Tower, one of the most powerful financial headquarters in the country.
“Mr. Sebastian,” a woman in a crisp navy suit greeted him, bowing slightly. “The board is waiting.”
Lucas walked past her without a word, his old hoodie and worn sneakers replaced with a fitted charcoal-gray suit and a Rolex worth more than the apartment he’d just left.
He stepped into the boardroom, where twelve directors rose to their feet. “Good morning, CEO,” one of them said, visibly sweating.
Lucas took his seat at the head of the table. “Let’s make this quick. I have something personal to attend to.”
They nodded without protest. No one questioned the man who had built Sebastian Holdings into a trillion-dollar empire from the shadows.
The man who had bought out tech companies, oil conglomerates, and private security firms without ever showing his face to the public. The world knew the name, but not the man. Until now.
Lucas glanced down at his watch. Rachel would be arriving at work in exactly fifteen minutes, at her usual desk on the 12th floor of Black Tower, completely unaware that the man she just humiliated was not only her husband But her boss.
Rachel strolled into the office lobby, laughing on the phone with her lover, Darren, her regional manager. “He signed it,” she said smugly. “Didn’t even try to fight for the house.”
On the other end, Darren chuckled. “You really should’ve dumped that loser years ago. Come up to my office later, babe.”
She winked at her reflection in the glass as she passed the front desk. “Oh, I’ll come up all right.”
The receptionist behind the desk glanced up nervously. “Ms. Rachel… you might want to check your email.”
Rachel’s brows furrowed. “What?”
She walked to her desk and turned on her computer. A notification pinged.
Subject: Corporate Restructuring Announcement
Her stomach dropped. CEO? They’d never had a face to put to the title, it was always just "the boss" in emails. No one had ever seen him.
The message read: “Effective immediately, new leadership protocols are in place. All department heads will report directly to the CEO by end of day. Failure to comply will result in immediate dismissal.”
Rachel blinked. Then her phone buzzed. A text.
Unknown Number: “Hello, Rachel. We need to talk - CEO’s office. Now.”
She frowned. “What the hell?”
Heart thumping, she made her way to the private elevator. No one stopped her. No one even looked her in the eye. When the doors opened, her world stopped.
Lucas was sitting behind the mahogany desk, one leg crossed casually over the other, sipping coffee, from the same espresso blend she mocked for years.
He didn’t smile. He didn’t even blink, Rachel stumbled backward. “L-Lucas…? What are you…?”
“Close the door,” he said coldly. “And wipe that fake smile off your face. You’re not going to need it anymore.”
