The security smirked as soon as he said that. He knew it or so he thought. A man like Abel could never possibly be able to provide the email.
With this viable reason, he would have the right to embarrass him as much as he wants.
Quickly, without allowing Abel to pull his phone from his pocket, he shoved his hand, grabbing his trouser like a criminal.
“What’s going on?” Abel asked, surprised at this sudden rude behaviour.
“You are one fucking liar and a piece of shit. That’s what’s going on.” He hit his foot on Abel’s heel, wanting to smack him down and dial 911 immediately, reporting him for trespassing.
But Abel’s stamina was firm. He couldn’t smack him down. So, he pushed him towards the stairs down to the road.
“Leave now. I don’t want to treat you like an animal.”
While he was being pushed and dragged to the stairs, Abel already dug his hand into his pocket. He opened his phone.
At the moment, he was at the edge of the steps.
“Look!” He raised his phone without opening the email content.
“Official Notification Northwest Energy and Companies.” The security man read the subject.
His eyes opened widely.
He froze. His mind rambled with questions.
“I don’t understand.” He gazed.
He looked at Abel from head to toe again. Slowly, he released his grip on his shoulder.
“Let me see the content of that email,” he said, his voice low.
“No!” Abel declined.
He understood it.
A congratulatory message he received from the company was confidential. He was the only one who should see it for now until the company decides to make it public. Showing it to a mere security man was of no use.
“I will be going in now. If you stop me again, I will not let it slide this time,” he said firmly.
The security said nothing. His eyes followed Abel as he approached the door and stepped in confidently.
****
Abel approached the front desk in the lobby.
“Good morning here. I’m Abel. I am here to see the board.”
The receptionist didn’t look up. Her hand raced on the keyboard. Her eyes were on the MacBook screen.
Each morning and every hour of the day, she was always doing something online to make sure the company runs its appointments smoothly.
“Okay, sir,” she responded.
“Do you have an appointment today? Please hold on while I check through the system for you.” She clicked three fingers on the cursor, and the screen split into three.
She moved her hand to the right, almost clicking into the appointments calendar. Something caught her gaze, then she looked up.
“Wait a minute,” she blurted in shock.
As a receptionist, every customer she attended to was always wearing an expensive suit, expensive wristwatches. She knew what wealth looked like the moment she saw it. But then, a man in a cheap suit, not even up to ten dollars, was at her front, and he was asking to see the board?
“Thank goodness I’ve not called the board. Do you even know where you are?” she hissed.
“I don’t understand. Please inform the board that Abel Kane is here. They already emailed me to come.”
She chuckled mockingly. She leaned her head over the counter and washed Abel badly from head to toe.
“You are in the wrong place.”
“Leave now, or I will call the security.”
“I just passed through the front door, and I was let in. Please let the board know I am here.”
She hissed. Hearing Abel say he had just come in through the door infuriated her.
It only meant one thing. The security guard at the door didn’t know how to do his job right.
“Michael!” she called firmly.
The security man, Michael, stepped into the foyer.
“Why do you let someone like this into the building?”
Michael’s heart dropped immediately. He understood it. In Northwest Energy, there was hierarchy.
He was just a front door man. His job was to let in customers. The secretary was in a higher position than him. If he didn’t do his job well, she had the right to report him and get him fired.
He stood at attention.
“I already sent him away, ma’am. But he insisted he is here to see the board. He showed me an email from the board contacting him to come.”
“An email?” she murmured.
She looked at Abel from head to toe again.
“Does this look like someone who can be contacted by a secretary, let alone the BOARD?” she hissed.
“I was contacted. Please call the...”
“Shut up, you.” The secretary interrupted immediately.
She stretched her hand to the telephone beside the MacBook.
“I am calling the securities to throw you out now, and for you, better get ready to be queried.”
She hit her finger on the telephone button and pulled the phone to her ear.
“Hel...”
“What’s happening here?” a deep bass voice interrupted suddenly.
The secretary looked to the side.
“Junior executive manager,” she thought, seeing who had just walked to the desk.
She bowed immediately and dropped the telephone back to the hang.
“Sir, this man wants to see the board. He claimed to be contacted to come.”
“This man?” The junior executive looked at Abel from head to toe.
“How can a man like this be contacted?”
“Call the security and throw him out at once.” He waved as though Abel meant nothing.
“I am here to see the board. I was contacted. Please let them know Abel Kane is here,” Abel said. His voice was firm.
He knew it.
The congratulatory message he received was real. If it were not real, the reward money credited in his account would not have been credited.
“If you guys are confused about anything, you can ask me questions or, please, check through the system and see if my name is on the appointment or not. But do not be rude to me. I am Abel Kane, and I am here to see the board.”
The junior executive chuckled darkly immediately.
“You have a big mouth for a loser like you.”
SLAP!
He slapped Abel hard on the face. The receptionist darted her eyes to the side. The sound was too loud. She couldn’t imagine it was her face.
But Abel remained firm, his face calm despite the slap.
“Is this how you treat people who walk into this company?” he asked confidently.
