Chapter 2: Peeping through the bathroom window

The sound of gunshots was like a symphony in the air.

A symphony of death and destruction.

Enemy tanks released shot after shot and automatic rifles blasted bullets at soldiers who hadn't even been aware of the fact that they would be in this sort of situation.

Their location had been compromised.

Constantine felt like screaming his lungs out.

He watched his fellow comrades take shots to the head, to the leg, to the stomach where the bullet sometimes grazed by and ripped their skin spilling the intestines out.

Their screams echoed in his head and the mighty rumbling of the enemy's war machines were enough to inspire fear into any soldier.

Constantine peeped through the hole of his small hideout and in a split second he had fired a bullet.

An enemy armor tank went up in flames and shots followed.

"I was the one who leaked out our location."

Constantine's eyes flew wide at the sound of the voice he heard and sure enough when he turned to look around, Mark stood there, almost as tall as he was and with tears streaming down his face. That was more than enough indication to know he was telling the truth.

They were a group of mercenary soldiers, the best group of mercenary soldiers, and they were out on a top secret mission. He was their leader.

Getting waylaid by the enemy had never happened before so that only meant someone had to have leaked out the progression of their movements.

They were in the northern grasslands. The enemy had lain in wait for them.

They had come with more than enough back up, more than enough fire power too. Constantine and his men were surrounded.

Con could see some of his men on the floor, the look on their faces of pure pain and anguish. Some had legs that were leaking blood, some part of it already blown off.

His men were dying.

"Kill me. I don't deserve to live!"

Con could tell what happened after this. It always happened like this.

Constantine would lose his voice. He would lose the ability to move too. He would only watch as guilt consumed Mark, as Mark crumpled and went on his knees, his sobs coming out ragged and sorrowful and his eyes full of remorse.

Out of nowhere Mark suddenly got a gun in his hand and he looked straight at Constantine as he shot himself in the side of the mouth.

The bullet tore through the flesh of his face in a split second.

Mark would fire again and the left part of his skull would have a bullet destroy it.

The last one would be aimed directly at his head and Con would watch as his fellow comrade blew his own head off.

Constantine blinked and he was back at his landlady's window, his eyes looking sunken and the look on his face haunted.

He hated reliving that part of his life. He had been able to turn the tide of the battle around but a lot of his men had already been heavily injured. Mark had killed himself because of the betrayal he suffered and the betrayal he had caused too.

Constantine had taken full responsibility for that and he had been disgraced and stripped of his position.

Constantine sighed and looked into the window to see that his landlady was done with her bath and she was heading out of the bathroom.

Great, he had wasted all that precious time.

With a few deft movements he was back in his room faster than he had been out of it and he gave himself one glance in the mirror.

He looked the same way he looked every normal morning.

Normal.

Not too shabby looking and with a fit stature. Dark haired, green eyed and already in his security guard's uniform.

Con was ready for work.

He walked out of his room the same time his landlady walked out of hers and the moment he saw the scrutinizing gaze she fixed on him, he hurriedly yawned and faked some slight discomfort in his stomach.

Her expression melted immediately and she gave him a small smile.

"Hi."

Constantine bit back the urge to moan at the sound of her voice and only gave her a small smile in return. Their eyes had locked and Con was just about to get lost in the softness of her brown eyes when someone cleared their throat.

"You've gotten yourself a new lover already i see."

The man's voice sounded rough and gravelly. It had that distinguished cultured tone to it.

Constantine turned to look at him and when no one said anything, he looked from the man to Aubrey and his landlady just let out a sigh.

"What are you doing here John?"

The man named John only smiled and watched her with disgust in his eyes.

"Nothing much, just said i should check on my ever so faithful wife who has now become a common attendant at a jewelry store. Do you have many lovers there too?"

Con could see pain flash on Aubrey's face but she still tried to keep a hold on her anger. John took that as a sign of weakness.

"Does the manager call you into his office for special services? Come on Aubrey, you can't possibly let this poor fool believe he's the only one in your life."

"The same way you made me believe i was the only one in yours?"

Aubrey's voice had an edge to it as she spoke and Constantine found himself falling deeper for the look on her face. Never underestimate a woman when she's angry.

"Am i leading him on the same way you led me on, the same way you led the rest of the world on to believe you were the faithful and loving husband everyone believed you were?"

"They still believe it!"

Aubrey cocked an eyebrow up at her former husband and smiled.

"You really think so?"

The look on John's face was angry and furious. He moved towards Aubrey menacingly but a chill crept up his spine and stopped him right in his tracks.

Constantine was still there, the feeling of danger that radiated off him wasn't something that could be easily ignored.

John cleared his throat and straightened his suit.

"I'm not here to exchange words with you. You can do whatever you want with your self and your life, it's none of my business. I'm only here to ask for my child back."

The look on Aubrey's face was one of pure bewilderment and confusion as she asked.

"Excuse me. what child?"
