Chapter 1: The Bloody Courtyard
“Goodbye Supreme Commander!” “Goodbye Supreme Commander!” The roar of 200,000 soldiers on the ground grew louder and louder as the military helicopter ascended from the ground. The sound of the aircraft blades and the wind current mixed with their cries. Maxwell stood at the open bay, with a firm, rigid salute as he stared at his comrades with a small, rare smile on his lips as they became smaller and smaller due to the altitude. He sighed softly as he sat on the seat reserved for him. Two military personnels were sitting down behind him as they stared straight ahead. He took out a locket from his pocket, in there was a picture of his parents, his sisters and his wife in a family portrait. He grinned widely as he wiped off the dust from the corner of the locket. He had spent four years away from home, defending the borders. And in these four years, he had been promoted to the position of the supreme commander with a 200,000 battalion at his command due to his high wit and determ
Chapter 2: A Soldier’s Promise
“They told me that you were dead, Maxwell,” Arabella's voice trembled as she reached shakily out to caress his cheek. “Every time I tried to reach the military channels just to get news about you but I was denied access and then they came.” “Your father refused to give them the deed of his land and they forcibly took it away from him, using our lives as bargaining chips. Your father told us to hide but your sisters and your mother were too late,” She broke into sobs that tore deeply at Maxwell’s heart. “They killed all of them and I watched. I was helpless. I couldn’t do anything. I buried them with my own hands, the servants fled and everything was thrown into chaos. My own family had tried to force me to remarry after their deaths. Where were you when we needed you, Maxwell?” Maxwell’s mind was in chaos. There’s no way his family would have died over a flimsy excuse of a land. There was definitely more to it. He held on tightly to Arabella’s frail body as guilt ate at him raw.
Chapter 3: The Vultures Return
“Look at this place, “ A man’s voice rang out as three people stepped through the shattered threshold. “How can Arabella stand living in this place!?”“I can’t believe she left the comfort of our home to come live in this slum,” The woman beside the man said, her face twisted in disdain.“You both spoiled her too much…” The young man beside them replied, constantly wiping his jacket with his hands. Disgust was clearly written on him.“Dad, Mum, Mike, you are all here,” Arabella chimed happily, her eyes watered making her mother scoff. Before any of them could speak, Maxwell stepped out the hallway into the living room. Theodore’s eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets, and Sienna let out a sharp, muffled gasp, her hand going to her throat.“Maxwell,” Theodore stammered, his face going pale. “You are… alive?”Mike gaze washed over him, his mouth forming into a vicious smirk as he shook his head, glaring at Maxwell. “So, you are back,” He laughed mockingly, taking a step closer. “And l
Chapter 4: The Fake Gift
“Mother, this has gone too far!” Arabella snapped, her voice filled with fury as she glared at her mother in the dressing room. She looked at waiter’s uniform in her mother’s hand and glanced at Maxwell. “He’s your son in law and not a servant. You can’t make him work as a waiter!” Sienna had a dismissive look on as she let out a cold snort. “Son in law? Arabella, are you stupid? You are still calling a man who returned with empty hands and a ruined name who had ultimately become a liability your husband? And if your so called husband wants to stay here for your grandfather’s birthday, he can earn his seat by carrying trays. At least he will be of some use to this family.” Theodore nodded in agreement, his face cold and indifferent. “Your mother is right. Either he puts on the uniform and works with the servants or he waits at the gates with the rest of the beggers. Choose quickly Arabella, the guests are arriving soon.” Arabella turned to Maxwell, a strong resolve in her eyes as
Chapter 5: Master Holloway’s Realization
The room was sent into an uproar at Maxwell’s words. Master Holloway’s eyes bulged, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his cane tightly. “A forgery? You dare insult me of collecting bribes! In all my 20 years of appraisal, I haven’t met anyone as bold as you that would stand up to me in such insultive manner!”“Master Holloway, please do not be annoyed by a flea,” Ashley said, disdain filled her face as she looked at Maxwell. “He’s just a stain on our family. A stain Theodore and his daughter has brought! Who knows he might not even had brought any gift to the occasion today and just came to free load!”The room erupted in mocking snickers.“So this was the son of the Greens?”“I heard that he was declared missing four years ago. I thought he was dead.”“Yes. The last time news of him recruiting into the army was everywhere seems he didn’t hold any valuable position after all. He has been reduced to a lowly waiter, haha!”“The Greens have fallen. Mr Zade is very much magnanimou
Chapter 6: Master Holloway’s Regret
Everyone turned to stare. They were petrified, whispers began to rise in the crowd. Maxwell’s lips twitched as he stared at Holloway at his feet, with a raised brow. Master Holloway has never kneeled before anyone… “What is this?” Some asked their counterparts. “Has Master Holloway gone drunk? Why is he kneeling before a servant?” Nathan walked towards them and tried to get Holloway to stand, thinking he was drunk. “Master Holloway, what are you doing?” Holloway shrugged out of his hold and barked at him. “Don’t touch me!” He glanced back at Maxwell. “I was blind sir. I’ve been a fool. Please do not be angry at me!” George Zade rose from his chair, staring at Holloway with shock. “Master Holloway, why are you kneeling in front of him? Are you drunk?! That’s a waiter. Stand up.” Holloway’s face darkened with horror and he glared at George making him shut up. “You are the drunk one! I’m more ashamed of you that you couldn’t even see the treasure under your nose. You should
Chapter 7: The Condition
“Maxwell, did you steal this?” Arabella muttered, staring at her husband with a raised brow and conflicted emotions on her face. Maxwell’s gaze softened as he shook his head. “I didn’t steal it. They have belonged to my family for generations. But, I seem to have forgotten that if someone wants to remain blind, they will remain blind no matter what help is offered to them.” “How dare you call us blind!?” Fred thundered. “If you don’t tell us the truth now, I will call the police!” Nathan stepped in and grabbed the beads from Holloway’s shaking hands and held them up for everyone to see. “Look at them. They are just wood, anyone can get a piece of wood and crave beads out of them and announce it to the world that it’s a treasure. Master Holloway is probably unwell and just needs rest. Security, Take the master to a side room to rest.” “No! Let me go! Give me back the necklace!” Holloway shrieked, trying to get hold of the beads but was restrained. Nathan turned to Maxwell w
Chapter 8: The Golden Partnership
Many of the families gathered here had tried one way or the other to get contracts with them. But they were picky and wouldn’t just cooperate with just anyone and George Zade thinks that he could get a chance? Even the Vallis family had tried and failed, but no one could say that aloud and anger the patriarch of the Zade family. Seeing that no one spoke, George continued. “Anyone who brings a signed partnership from the Forest Hills Company within one week will be named the successor to the Zade Group.” “Are you sure you will keep your word?” Maxwell responded. George narrowed his gaze at him, staring at him scornfully. “I have never gone back on my word.” “Then my wife will bring the signed partnership to you.” Fred and his children snickered beside them. “Arabella wouldn’t even last an hour at the gates without being thrown out,” Ashley said with a laugh. Arabella was instantly enraged. She slapped Maxwell’s palm. “What are you saying?! Do you even know the Forest Hi
Chapter 9: Vile Mother
Maxwell held on tightly to Arabella’s trembling hand. “I trust you and I know what you can do so please trust me. I will never let you fall.” “You have done enough already!” Mike sneered. “Don’t you think about my sister at all? Arabella, I had warned you. Do away with this man, he will drag you down.” Arabella shook her head, trying to digest everything. She didn’t understand why Maxwell was so insistent on making her take on this task. She sighed. “It’s fine. I will do it.” “Hehe, let’s watch and see how you would disgrace our family,” Ashley sneered. Maxwell glared at her with stormy eyes and said in a low, dangerous voice. “Don’t think I have forgotten about what you have done to my wife. We have scores to settle.” Arabella held his arm and shook her head. “I don’t want more fights. Just let it go.” “Fine. If that’s what you want. But, I would like to leave.” “Where are you going?” She asked, searching his eyes. Maxwell went silent for a moment, wondering what he
Chapter 10: Room 404
“Okay sir,” Elena nodded without questions. Knowing Maxwell, Nathan must have made problems with the wrong person. “I ask to take my leave now if there’s nothing more.” Maxwell nodded. … “Mum, are you sure about this?” Arabella asked with skeptical tune as she stared at the grand hotel through the taxi window. Her brows raised. Why would Nathan arrange a meeting between her and the director of Forest Hills in a hotel at 11pm?! “Don’t be afraid, Arabella. Nathan won’t bite you. Besides, you should be thankful to him after all he’s trying to help you escape the pit that useless man caused for us,” Sienna spat out with disgust. Arabella sighed. “Mum, you shouldn’t be too harsh on Maxwell. He believes in me, that's why he acted that way.” “Hmph,” Sienna scoffed. “You would always stand up for him. Anyways, that will all end soon. Hurry along, we wouldn’t want you to be late now, would we?” Arabella nodded, although still not feeling too good about this. She couldn’t ignore the p
