Chapter 1: A Father’s Desperation
Logan stopped for a bit to catch his breath. He had just taken out the trash. His worn out janitor’s uniform that had faded from years of washing had several fresh stains on it. He looked at it and sighed, making a mental note to himself to buy a fresh set when he got paid. Still under the hot weather, something vibrated in his pocket, he reached into it and brought out an old and battered phone. His jaw worked when he saw the caller ID and firmly pressed the phone against his ear. "Can you hear me, Mr Mitchell? Are you there?" A woman's voice echoed when she heard nothing, but she continued speaking regardless, "You need to come to the hospital right now. Mia is currently being transferred to the emergency room.” Logan's eyes flew wide, "What are you saying, Doctor? You told me yourself that she wouldn't have any complications for the next three months." His voice was shaky as he spoke, he wouldn't know what to do with himself if anything happened to his precious daughter, Mia. "
Chapter 2: The Price of a Life
The nurse at the desk looked at him hesitantly, she gave him a once-over, his washed out uniform and dishevelled look didn't help matters. She sighed and almost rolled her eyes then typed on her computer. "Mr Mitchell, your daughter isn't getting any better and the hospital can't treat her anymore." She said after a while.Logan's breath caught in his chest. His vision blurred. His brows furrowed in frustration, "What do you mean…?” The nurse looked up at him, trying to appear sympathetic but failed when she opened her mouth. "I’m sure you know the reason why. Your daughter has surpassed our treatment. You're now down to two options." He leaned forward, “And they are?” “You're either gonna take her to another hospital…” The nurse began. Logan's face fell at the mention of the first option, he tightened his fist as he waited in silence for the nurse to continue, “...Or, you're gonna pay to fly in another doctor to come treat her.” His heart skipped several beats, fly in anoth
Chapter 3: Reaching into the Past
“What was that, Logan?” Ava demanded the moment Francis was gone. “Are you insane? Why would you speak to him like that? He was willing to help us. Where are we supposed to get $600,000?!” Logan opened his mouth to reassure her, to tell her he would find a way, when the nurse approached them again. Her posture was stiff, her voice louder than necessary, getting the attention of the people around. “Mr. Mitchell.” She called almost rudely, “You’ve been instructed to remove your daughter from this hospital by the end of today if payment cannot be made.” Her voice was so loud that surrounding patients and staff whispered amongst themselves about it. Some had mocking looks while others had looks of pity. Shame plastered all over Logan's face. Why is this happening to me? Ava broke down on hearing what the nurse said. “This is your fault!” She cried, striking Logan’s chest. “You chased away the only person who could have saved us.” Her tears dried as quickly as they came, her expression
Chapter 4: The Return of the Heir
Astral Corp was one of the largest company buildings in the city. It was the headquarters which had different conglomerates reporting to it and had different segments which were all thriving well with Logan's family at the center of it all, managing every aspect. Logan was really pissed at the old man's request. For many years, he had been avoiding his family, especially his father, and now Alfred was making him go there. He knew the old man's tricks but he didn't have much of a choice. It's for his dear Mia after all. He went into Mia's room to check on her and Ava. He saw Ava holding their daughter’s hand, fighting back tears. He couldn't remember when his daughter opened her eyes last, or the last time they were all happy as one family. Logan wanted to go to them, to comfort Ava and tell her everything would be fine. But the image of her yelling at him earlier flashed in his head and he stepped back. Without saying a word, he left the room. “I know you said tomorrow, Alfre
Chapter 5: Mockery in the Lobby
Logan’s mother in-law continued to plead with the female receptionist while Stacy stood by the side, nodded continuously to whatever Leslie was saying. He was amazed by the sight. He noticed that there was another lady with them. She seemed to be around the same age as Stacy, she was talking to the female receptionist along with Leslie. "You should know who I am, I'm Adriana Lima. My father has a lot of connections with most of the higher-ups in this company. One phone call from him and you might not get to keep your job. So I advise you to let us see the CEO while we're asking nicely." The female receptionist was still unfazed by her threat. "I'm sorry. But I can't let you see the CEO unless you have a significant appointment with him. How about you go get an appointment and then come back later." Adriana scoffed, “Did you not hear a word I said?” Logan guessed why they were desperately seeking an audience with the CEO. Leslie was the deputy sales director of a mid-tier com
Chapter 6: The Billion Dollar Signature
While Logan was still in his thoughts, the elevator that led straight to the CEO’s floor dinged loudly, drawing their attention. The woman that stepped out was the CEO’s secretary, she was sharp-looking as she took measured strides towards them. Leslie quickly adjusted her clothes and turned sharply to Stacy. "Keep it down, will you? Can't you see that someone from the CEO's floor is here? Behave yourself." She scolded as she tried her best to look as calm as possible. "Oh my God! That's true…” Stacy composed herself quickly, “They must have reconsidered your business proposal and sent her to inform us, mom." She turned to Adriana, "Your father's connection must have worked after all. Adriana huffed quietly, "I told you my father's influence will come through. " She said with a proud smirk. While they didn't know that the CEO they fawned over was the Mitchell family butler, Alfred Macdonald, they also didn't know that the actual CEO and the rightful heir to the property they
Chapter 7: The Betrayal
Something shifted within Logan, he became angry but controlled himself, "It doesn't matter what you say Alfred. I know that my father is somehow involved in what happened to her and for that I will never forgive him. You of all people should know that.” Alfred took a deep breath, "Young Master, I know that I'm in no position to tell you this, but your father is not the only one in the Mitchell family. Refusing to perform your duties… simply means that you're ready to throw away all the decades of effort put into building this empire.” Logan scoffed and looked away. He understood where Alfred was coming from, Astral Corp was his responsibility but he had been running away from it for years and now it had finally caught up to him. He hated being here, but Mia… for her sake, he was willing to do anything, even if it meant coming back to the place that once caused him unbearable pain. He took a pen and read through the documents, then sighed it before handing it over to the old man.
Chapter 8: Slap of Accusation
Logan shoved the suitcase into Francis’ hands, "Take it back, you asshole. You might have fooled everyone but I know you as the snake that you are. Lusting over my wife since the day you set eyes on her. You think I'll allow that to happen?" He grabbed the man by the collar again and dragged him towards the elevator. "Now, get lost." Francis let out an amused chuckle. He straightened himself and pulled Logan into the elevator and whispered in his ear, “Haha, you got me. But guess what, I'm not going to stop, I'm gonna sleep with your wife and make her leave you. Just watch, you bastard.” He pushed Logan out of the elevator and the doors closed. Logan breathed heavily as rage built up inside him… Imagine being that cocky. He straightened himself before turning back towards Mia's room. As he slowly approached Ava, part of him wished that she didn't realize…that she didn't know what Francis was after. Because why would she accept any help from him if she knew his agenda? He pray
Chapter 9: The Bitter End
It took more than a passing minute for Logan to realise that Ava wasn't going to answer his question. He shook his head and blinked back the tears that were starting to form, “Keep an eye on Mia. I have to get back to Synergy.” He said in a low voice then left. Ava watched him go. She was heartbroken but she realised that she didn't want him here, that alone answered the question Logan had asked her earlier. Logan’s head was filled with thoughts as he stood at the side of the road, waiting for a taxi. He had decided to come out of hiding just for his daughter and his wife but what did he get in return? His wife saw him as a man who wasn't capable and it hurt more than ever. His heart had been at its lowest since his sister's death. He decided he was going to end things and quit, then he met Ava, she took care of his heart for the longest time…only to shatter it again. It really was unexpected of her… Logan arrived at Synergy Corp in a bad mood. He kept on replaying what had hap
Chapter 10: Stripped and Scorned
Mr Scott didn't like the way Logan was handling the matter. He wanted Logan to cry and beg for another chance. "What stupid salary? You're not going to get a single dime." This was something Logan couldn't tolerate. Even if the salary was nothing, it didn't change the fact that he worked for it, he took out the trash, skipped meals, and tolerated a lot of insults just to get paid. He wouldn't take it lying down. "Since you've decided to not pay me, I'll be taking the matter up with the general manager." The supervisor man waved Logan off with his hand. “Do whatever you want. Now get out of here and don't show your face to me again, unless you want your co-workers to throw you out of here." Logan went straight to the manager to report the matter but found that the man was in support of what Mr Scott did to him. Logan then threatened to report the manager to the human resources department. This made the manager so angry that he called security. “You've messed up big time, you goo
