The Damn Sword Got Me in Trouble

I gulped as the High Priest stood right in front of me. Suddenly, his hand grabbed the sword that was in my hand. Instantly he managed to pull the sword from the scabbard. I was so surprised that my mouth gaped involuntarily because I was so sure that earlier I could not remove the sword from the scabbard at all, but this old man easily lifted the sword.

"B-But..."

“Pulling out the sword is not just a matter of pulling out the sword, Rex Hito. Everything has a purpose, everything has a meaning. Only the right intentions and goals can make you successful as an apprentice priest. What is your purpose for pulling out this sword?” he asked.

“W-what?” I asked, frowning.

I don't understand the point at all. His words were convoluted and I couldn't catch his meaning at all. My purpose for pulling out this sword? Wasn't he the one who told me to do it?
