In complete silence, an uneven, rough-coated cylinder came closer. It had an unusual shape and texture that felt both familiar and out of place and time: the bark was rough and ashen from a charring fire, and it was shaped like a collapsed, branchless tree trunk. A small region of blue light appeared as it got closer—was that a lingering flame from the blaze? -- lit up the top of the form just past its center. Its growing aft was surrounded in the pitch-blackness of space by yellow light haloes that most likely came from inside the cylinder as if embers still burned with molten yellow-white heat inside the stubbed remains of roots that had once supported and fed the huge tree.

So, this is one part of their base? It looks like a vehicle, a huge vehicle that's as large as a town. Hannah thinks.
