Chapter 1

CHAPTER ONE

The iron prison gates creaked open with a groan of rusted metal. A tall man stepped into the daylight, his shadow stretching long and sharp across the concrete.

Dante Morrell lifted his face to the sun, letting its warmth bleed into skin that had forgotten light. Ten years. Ten years of gray walls, iron bars, and the slow, merciless drip of time. Now he was free.

His prison uniform hung loose over a body forged by brutal labor, but it wasn’t his frame that commanded attention. It was his eyes—cold, calm, and dangerously still. Eyes that had stared into hell and refused to break.

A guard tossed a small bag at his chest. “Your belongings.”

Dante caught it without a word. Inside: a worn wallet, a faded photograph of his younger sister Elena smiling beside their mother, and a black dragon crest necklace. His fingers closed tightly around the cold metal. The last thing his father had given him before disappearing without a trace.

The guard snorted. “You’re lucky, Morrell. Most men who go in for murder don’t walk out.”

Dante said nothing. He simply walked forward.

The gates slammed shut behind him with a final, deafening clang. Ten years ago, he had entered these walls as a broken man. Today, he walked out as something far more dangerous.

Across the street, a black luxury sedan waited in silence. Inside, a middle-aged man watched Dante through tinted glass. His hand trembled as he raised his phone.

“Sir… he’s out.”

A deep voice answered from the other end, unnervingly calm.

“…After ten years?”

“Yes.”

Silence stretched for a moment.

“Good,” the voice said. “Prepare everything.”

Another pause.

“The world is about to change.”

------

Dante slipped the black dragon necklace around his neck. A quiet fire burned in his chest—the fire that had been sharpening for a decade. Camilla Ashcroft. The woman who framed him. The family that had destroyed his life.

His lips curved into the faintest, deadliest smile.

“They thought ten years would break me…” he whispered.

“They were wrong.”

He stepped forward into the sunlight.

“I’m back.”

Ten Years Earlier

The mistake that destroyed Dante Morrell’s life began at a wedding.

The Ashcroft wedding was meant to be the event of the year. Luxury cars lined the long driveway of the sprawling estate. Reporters swarmed outside the iron gates, cameras flashing as the city’s richest and most powerful arrived. Inside the grand ballroom, white roses climbed marble pillars and crystal chandeliers sparkled like captured stars. A string quartet played softly while the elite whispered behind polite smiles.

Everything had been arranged for one moment: Camilla Ashcroft’s wedding.

The beautiful heiress was supposed to marry Dylan Pierce, the admired young CEO. At least, that had been the plan.

Minutes dragged by. Then more. The groom never appeared.

Whispers spread like wildfire.

“Where’s Dylan Pierce?”

“Is the ceremony delayed?”

“Did something happen?”

Phones buzzed. Journalists outside began reporting live. Camilla stood near the altar in her flowing white gown, makeup flawless, posture regal. But her eyes burned with fury.

Another twenty minutes passed. Still no groom.

Her father approached, face pale. “Camilla… he isn’t coming.”

Gasps rippled through the crowd. A champagne glass shattered somewhere. The whispers grew crueler.

“So it’s true. The groom ran away.”

“Poor Camilla Ashcroft.”

“The proud heiress, humiliated at the altar.”

“Can you blame him? Everyone knows how controlling she is.”

Camilla didn’t cry. She never would in public. But the humiliation cut deeper than any blade. The richest families in the city were watching. The media was watching. The entire world was watching.

And Dylan Pierce had turned her into a joke.

Her nails dug into her palms as rage coiled in her chest.

He dared to humiliate me.

Near the service entrance, Dante Morrell stood quietly, watching the chaos. He didn’t belong here. He was just a lowly worker—repairs, deliveries, errands—someone who moved through the estate like a shadow.

But today, fate had kept him in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Camilla’s sharp gaze swept across the room, past the shocked guests and whispering elites, until it locked onto him.

Dante froze.

For a moment, the entire ballroom seemed to vanish. Only her eyes remained—cold and calculating. Then she began walking toward him.

Guests parted instinctively as the furious heiress crossed the floor. Dante’s heart hammered. When she stopped in front of him, the difference in their worlds was painfully clear.

She was wealth. Power. Prestige.

He was nothing.

Camilla studied his face for a long second, then spoke.

“You.”

Dante blinked. “Me?”

“Yes.” Her lips curved into a smile that held no warmth. “If Dylan Pierce thinks he can humiliate me… then I’ll show the world I don’t need him.”

The ballroom fell deathly silent. Every eye was on them.

Camilla lifted her chin and looked straight into Dante’s stunned eyes.

“You’ll marry me today.”
