Caleb was utterly shocked by what she said. He quickly replied, “I’m not worthy of you, Miss Amber. As you already know, I’m just a criminal and currently unemployed. You’ll end up regretting it if you stay with someone like me.”

Truthfully, Caleb wanted to reject Amber. As disappointed as he was in Ava, that didn’t mean he had room in his heart for someone else.

But to reject Amber outright would mean humiliating her and crushing her pride. After what she had done for him, he couldn’t possibly do that.

So instead, he chose to put himself down, hoping Amber would reconsider her decision. After all, he truly believed someone as incredible as her deserved far better than him.

But what Amber said next left him completely stunned. Was she really this stubborn?

“So what if you’re a criminal and unemployed? I don’t care about your background or status. I’m interested in you, so I want to have you.”

Realizing that Amber wouldn’t back down no matter what he said, Caleb finally replied, “Decide that after you get to know me better, Miss Amber. For now, let’s just focus on your duties.”

Amber responded, “If that’s what you want, then I’ll follow it. But just so you know, I’m going to prove that I’m a much better woman than your wife—and one day, you’ll choose to be with me.”

Of course, Amber wasn’t stupid—she could clearly tell that Caleb didn’t want her.

But the fact that he rejected a woman as beautiful as her, and more importantly, the sole heiress of the Knight Family, only made Caleb more attractive in her eyes. Her desire to have him grew stronger by the second. She wanted to conquer him.

Caleb, on the other hand, didn’t respond to her after that, and soon they arrived at a room on the second floor.

It was a special room reserved for the elite guests—those who came from the top seven families in Fluxville.

Naturally, the Thompson Family wasn’t among them. The Thompsons were ranked somewhere in the top fifty families in Fluxville, so they were seated downstairs among the general guests.

At that point, Caleb decided to remain at the entrance of the room, waiting there until the event was over. He felt unworthy of being in the same room as Amber.

But Amber insisted he come inside, so he had no choice but to follow her.

Shortly after, the gavel hit the block, and the auction officially began. But instead of paying attention to the event, Amber turned to Caleb and asked, “By the way, since you don’t have a job yet, how about becoming my bodyguard, Caleb? Don’t worry—I’ll make sure the pay is worth it.”

Caleb was silent for a moment, lost in thought, before finally agreeing.

Being an ex-con, finding a job in Fluxville was nearly impossible. Most companies wouldn’t even look at him. His only real shot at survival was starting his own business—but that was out of the question. He had given every last cent he had to Ava.

So, becoming Amber’s bodyguard was actually a solid first step.

Amber, on the other hand, was delighted that Caleb accepted her offer so easily. It meant she would get to spend more time with him.

An hour later, the auction ended without Amber placing a single bid. She wasn’t interested in antique items and didn’t see the point in spending her money on them.

Her presence at the auction was merely a formality—a courtesy to the Clifton Family for inviting the Knights.

After that, the top ten families in Fluxville were invited to a luncheon on the tenth floor.

Again, the Thompson Family was nowhere on that list.

At this point, Caleb and Amber entered the tenth floor, where a massive round table was placed right in the center of the room. It was covered with luxurious dishes—most of which Caleb had never even seen before.

Around the table sat representatives from the ten most powerful families in Fluxville.

Seeing them enter, one of the Clifton Family members—Rauf Clifton—couldn’t help but ask, “May I know who you are, Beautiful Lady?”

Amber answered casually, “I’m Amber Knight, the sole granddaughter of Julius Knight.”

At those words, Rauf’s expression lit up. He immediately spoke in a respectful tone, “What an honor to finally meet the mysterious woman of the Knight Family, whose face has never been shown to the public. I’m glad you decided to attend.”

Upon seeing her for the first time, Rauf couldn’t hide the gleam in his eyes. He hadn’t expected Amber to be this stunning and flawless. He wanted her.

Amber replied indifferently, “My grandfather forced me. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t even be here.”

Rauf gave a thin smile. Just like the rumors said—Amber truly was a cold woman.

Even though she acted arrogant and rude, that only made Rauf want her more.

But that desire was crushed instantly when another man, sitting casually with his feet up on the table, suddenly said, “I’m really interested in you, Beautiful. How about we go on a date tonight and spend the night together? I promise I’ll give you an unforgettable experience.”

The speaker was Alton Mason, son of Liam Mason—the leader of The Wolf Fang.

The Wolf Fang was a mafia syndicate that controlled the underworld of Fluxville and many neighboring cities.

Naturally, their influence far exceeded that of the top ten families in Fluxville. So when Alton spoke, no one dared to defy him. Everyone lowered their heads in fear, not wanting to get involved in what was clearly about to become a serious problem.

Alton was throwing a lit match into a puddle of gasoline.

A clash between the Knight Family and The Wolf Fang was inevitable. And of course, everyone in that room would side with The Wolf Fang, given their overwhelming power and reach. The Knights would either have to hand over their sole heiress—or be completely annihilated.
