Chapter 01 - Fined and Bethrothed

Ooooz! - Glasses Shatter!

Bawr! - The entrance Door Explodes!

The soldiers in black stormed into the building, their guns pointed in different directions as lights flooded the room. My father, the priest, quickly grabbed my sister and me, and we dashed through the church's halls to meet the security men who had cornered us like prey meets predators.

"Why haven't you paid the fine?" One of the security men asked, standing out from the others.

"Regarding the fines," my father responded, "I'm saving up. I have a farm downtown where I'm from, and we're looking for ways to gather money from the church and my farm to pay you." He explained.

"Shut up! Old man!" A guard fires!

"Have some respect," I said, only to be knocked down by one of the men.

"My father is a priest" If he said he's going to pay, he's going to pay." I yelled back stubbornly as the man screamed back at my father like a devil.

"You're to leave and evacuate immediately! Because you are a priest doesn't mean you'll live rent free."

As my sister tried to approach the man who had hit me, an officer routed her down to the floor, breaking her leg.

Then gunshots filled the air as they rampaged and destroyed the entire church, bringing out our boxes and destroying everything we had called home, as they demanded for a bribe.

It was evident that this church was more than just a place of worship... It was a formal ground for monks who taught saints to fight, and people who lived here before had meta powers that threatened the authorities.

So the government had wanted it closed to destroy that history, but because my father, a priest, had come, they had to acknowledge its status as a church, which had caused the case to linger.

I watched as they destroyed all our things. "You can't do this," my father said. He wasn't a really strong man due to an underlying illness that had bothered him for years.

They pushed him aside, humbling him with one of their weapons.

I quickly rushed to one of the security men, grabbing his gun before bashing the man who had hit my sister.

I knew my father wasn't my biological parent, but he was a great man. Despite knowing little about his past, I knew he was strong. Hurting him felt like disrespecting all he had taught me.

I fired bullets into the air to threaten them as the military men pointed their guns at me. "Nolan, you don't want them to have you on their list," my father said, looking into my eyes.

The commander sneered, "Priest, I know you're skilled... You must have trained the children in combat... Let's hope this one doesn't have any meta power, otherwise we might need to take him for a check." He said before my father interrupted him.

"My son has nothing to do with meta powers," my father intervened. "I've only trained him to fight and protect himself and the church... Forgive his behavior, Nolan... Retreat." He orders.

"Drop the gun, drop the weapons immediately." I looked at his face, seeing blood dripping from his head. I breathed out in anger, pain, and revenge, I didn't want him hurt like this... So, I dropped the weapons.

The security men laughed, then proceeded to destroy the church, breaking windows and chairs. I stood shocked, unable to do anything despite the skills I'd been trained with.

As they threw our belongings outside, we walked through the empty town during the cold night. We eventually stopped under a main bridge, where we rested for the day.

"I understand we're going through a lot, but we need to be strong for each other," I continued.

"I'm sure I can find a way... I could get a job in town, make money, and we'll get a new place."I said, shaking in pain.

"Oh no, son, calm your nerves, you don't need to do all that because of us, especially me," my father replied.

"You have your sister to take care of, including your own life. I've always had the duty to train and protect you children and now both of you are adults, you must act as one." His eyes reddened as he spoke.

"I'm disappointed that I couldn't work hard enough, and you guys are going through all this, I was so distracted by fighting darkness instead of fighting for both of your comforts." He said staring at both of us.

I walked up to him and hugged him, and so did my foster sister.

We both stared into his eyes.

"What's going to happen is..." my father said, pausing. "I have something to tell you, Nolan, I think it's time." He said

I looked at him expectantly.

"What is it?" I asked.

He looked back at me, worried.

"I've been hiding a secret from you all this while. You see, when I found you... You were not an ordinary child, There was a document you came with." He said his hand over my shoulders.

"What document?" I asked.

"It's at the church." He said.

"We need to find a way to sneak back to the church." He said to me.

One of the things I knew about my father was that he never lies.

"Dad, we can't go back there, it's late, Bianca is tired, you are not feeling well and those soldiers are there, I can't risk holding myself if I have to watch them hurt you again." I said to him.

"Whatever the document is, leave it, we don't need it." I said to him and he walked past me.

"Nolan, No, We must get it!" He applied force in his words as he dashed out.

"Where are you off to?" I asked.

"Okay wait... What about the document, why is it so important?" I asked.

"I'll be back, stay with Bianca." He said.

"Okay wait, I will go with you." I said.

"And who will stay with your injured Sister! Who would protect her?" He asked, his eyes reddened as I looked around the dark bridge corner.

"Is this how I trained you?" He asked.

"I'm sorry." I replied to him before I stayed back, treating Bianca's wounds.

After over an hour he returns.

Bruises were all over his bloody body including a gunshot to his chest.

"Father!" I rushed towards him.

Bianca paced from behind me.

"Those men, they shot him?" She panicked.

"I am fine, my children." He excuses.

"Listen, I know this feels fast paced, but it's a sign that it's time." He said.

"Do you think he is ready?" Bianca said as her eyes turned teary that moment.

"The heck! Ready for what?" I asked.

"Nolan, take this box, call this number when you get to town, don't open it till you meet this person, here's some money, I and Bianca need treatments for our wounds." He said in pain.

"We can't explain everything right now, but you'll understand in the long run, light be with you." He said as I stood looking at my Dad and sister, leaving me for a nearby train station.

I stood shocked.

"Light be with you..." I prayed before entering the next taxi for town, whatever this was, I need to know.

"Go Nolan, don't miss the train." He said as I stood still.

"It's time, Go now Nolan." Bianca adds before I turned, no words, whatever was in that clipped Document.

I must find out!
