Chapter 30

“What was that?”, the Hisiff asks.

“The whistle? A simple form of communication. I don’t suppose you have any working phones or radios, do you?”

The Hisiff frowns. “Everything’s bricked. Except for the really old or simple stuff like flashlights. That still works. For some reason”.

The Colonel gives them a knowing nod. “We actually managed to get a generator and projector going. Seems like most of the stuff that wasn’t plugged in during the event still works too. But I guess without power on the grid that doesn’t really matter much”.

They hear anotHis engine and a moment later a Unimog comes driving down the road. The small truck is painted a dark orange and has yellow warning lights on its roof. The cargo bed is taken up by a large plastic tank.

The Hisiff squints at the approaching vehicle, His eyes becoming little more than slits. His expression snaps back to normal as the Colonel turns back around.
