Chapter 1
The Late Fee
The end of the world began with a library late f*e. Liam stood entirely still at the automated checkout kiosk, his fingers tapping against the laminated countertop. The digital screen glared back at him with an obnoxious, flashing red warning box. The machine was frozen solid, stubbornly refusing to process the slightly crumpled hardcover copy of a Victorian thriller he held tightly in his hands. He took a deep breath, adjusted the wire-rimmed glasses sliding down his nose, and let out a long, heavy sigh. All he wanted was one quiet afternoon to get lost in a story. He had always been a creature of rigid habit, actively preferring the dusty smell of old paper, the dim aisle lighting, and the predictable silence of the Central Library to the chaotic, noisy streets of the city outside. "Come on, just scan," Liam whispered to the glowing monitor, tapping the plastic screen with the corner of the book. "I am only twelve hours late. Do not do this to me today." The machine did not respond. The barcode scanner beneath the screen blinked its red laser beam uselessly, casting a thin crimson line across his pale fingers. Then, the world broke apart. The overhead fluorescent lights flickered violently, buzzing like an angry swarm of hornets before they died completely. The sudden darkness plunged the high-ceilinged room into deep, cavernous shadows. A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the building. It was a thick, unnatural quiet that made the tiny hairs on the back of Liam's neck stand up straight. The ambient hum of the city, the distant sound of traffic, the faint rumble of the subway line below, all of it vanished in an instant. A second later, a loud sound like tearing silk fabric echoed through the very foundations of the building. It was deep, terrifying, and felt like it was ripping through the fabric of reality itself. "What was that?" Liam said aloud, his voice dropping into a tense whisper. "Did the generator blow out?" No one answered. The library was completely empty of other patrons at this hour, leaving him alone with the echoing silence. Liam turned his head slowly toward the massive, floor-to-ceiling glass windows that faced the main downtown street. His breath caught tightly inside his throat, and his muscles locked completely still. The blue sky above the city skyscrapers was cracking apart like brittle glass. Giant, jagged fissures of black void spread across the horizon, and a blinding wave of heavy crimson light washed over the landscape. It rolled down the asphalt like an unstoppable tidal wave. Wherever that strange red light touched, physical reality simply dissolved. Liam watched in absolute horror as moving cars, solid concrete buildings, and screaming pedestrians instantly shattered into millions of tiny, pixelated red particles, floating away into the empty air like dust. "This is not real," Liam stammered, his eyes wide as he watched a three-story clothing boutique across the street turn into a cloud of red mist. "This cannot be happening. I am dreaming. Wake up, please wake up." He staggered backward, his boots sliding wildly on the polished linoleum floor. The Victorian thriller slipped from his numb fingers, hitting the ground with a dull, heavy thud. His heart hammered violently against his ribs like a trapped bird trying to break free. Before his brain could even begin to process the absolute annihilation happening just inches away on the other side of the glass windows, a cold, mechanical voice echoed directly inside his mind. "Survivor 1073 localized." Liam gasped loudly, clutching his head with both hands as the sound vibrated through his teeth. "Who is speaking? Who is in my head?" He spun around in a circle, looking across the empty lobby in a total panic. "Is anyone there? Hey! Answer me! Where are you?" The mechanical voice completely ignored his loud verbal plea, continuing its flat, robotic broadcast inside his skull with zero emotion. "Location detected: Central Library. Base secured. You have acquired ownership of the unique territory: The Library. Current Territory Level: F." "What do you mean base?" Liam shouted into the empty room, his voice cracking with pure terror. He gripped the edge of the checkout desk to keep his knees from buckling under his weight. "What is happening to the city out there? What do you mean by level F? Is this some kind of sick joke? Someone answer me right now! Where did everyone go?" There was no verbal answer to his questions. Instead, the heavy oak entry doors behind him slammed shut with a deafening, explosive bang, moving entirely on their own power without anyone touching them. A translucent blue barrier flared to life across the dark wood, humming loudly with static energy and casting a cold glow across the floorboards. Liam rushed to the main doors, throwing his entire body weight against the heavy handles. "Open up!" He yelled at the top of his lungs, banging his fists wildly against the solid wood. "Let me out of here! Somebody help me! Is anyone outside?" His palms slapped hard against the glowing blue barrier, and a sharp, agonizing jolt of electricity snapped through his fingers, forcing him to pull his arms back instantly. "Ow! What is this stuff?" He cradled his burning, throbbing hand tightly against his chest, tears pricking the corners of his eyes. "Let me out!" He turned around slowly, his back pressed hard against the locked doors, staring out the massive glass windows again. There was absolutely nothing left outside the building. There were no streets, no trees, no vehicles, and no sky. The entire city was gone. There was only an endless, swirling void of dark crimson mist pressing against the glass, moving like a living ocean. He was completely trapped inside the building, totally cut off from a world that had just ceased to exist. "Is anyone else here?" Liam called out loudly, his voice echoing hollowly off the distant walls of the fiction section. He stepped away from the door, his boots making a clicking sound against the floor. "Please, tell me I am not alone in this place! Is anybody alive? Is there a staff member here?" The heavy, dusty silence of the library swallowed his voice completely. There was no sound except for his own ragged, uneven breathing. He was entirely on his own, standing in the dark room, holding his breath as he waited to see what would happen next in this new, terrifying reality. Liam slowly walked back toward the center of the lobby, his eyes glued to the windows. The red mist outside seemed to press against the glass, testing its strength, but the library walls held firm. He looked down at his feet and saw the Victorian thriller lying open on the floor, its pages rustling gently in a draft that had not been there a minute ago. "Level F," he muttered to himself, remembering the words of the voice in his head. "If this is a base, what am I supposed to defend it against?" He picked up the book, smoothing down the crumpled cover out of pure habit. The digital kiosk behind him suddenly sparked, the screen turning completely black. The blue barrier at the door continued to hum, a constant reminder that the world he knew was gone, and he was now the sole owner of a library at the end of time. He squeezed the book tightly against his chest, took a deep breath, and began to walk slowly toward the dark aisles, looking for any sign of life.
