The tutorial marker led Ravan away from the instructor area and toward the far end of the village.

A small training room sat beside the main yard. The door opened when he reached it and closed behind him.

Stone floor. A weapon rack along the wall. One training dummy in the center.

No instructor. No guide. No skill book.

Ravan looked around the room once, then read the tutorial objective again.

Objective: Create or demonstrate one Arank combat technique.

He walked to the weapon rack and picked up a practice sword. He swung it once slowly. Light, dull, badly balanced. He adjusted his grip and turned to face the dummy.

He did not move immediately.

Wrist. Shoulder. Footwork. Breathing.

The body was still weak in places, but it responded well enough.

He raised the sword.

The first swing landed clean against the dummy’s center.

42

The dummy rocked.

Ding! Combat pattern detected. Registration incomplete.

Ravan reset his stance. He adjusted his grip slightly lower and breathed once.

The second swing landed harder.

CRACK—

71

A split ran down the dummy’s torso.

He lowered the sword and looked at the angle of the crack. He shifted his back foot, corrected his shoulder line, and raised the sword again.

The third swing came down from the shoulder in one clean motion.

SHHHK—

The practice sword cut through the dummy from the top of the shoulder to the base.

The two halves separated and hit the floor.

Thud. Thud.

The room went quiet.

Ding! New skill registered!

Please name the skill.

The announcement rang out across Divine Epoch Online.

Outside the training room the beginner village stopped.

“What?”

“An Arank skill? The game just opened.”

“How is that even possible already?”

“Player XXXX?”

“He hid his name.”

“Why hide?”

“Because guilds will hunt him down if he shows it.”

“Which class even lets you make your own skills?”

“Ask around. Someone has to know.”

Players were talking over each other. Some ran toward their instructors. Some pulled up the forum interface. Others just stood looking around as if the anonymous player would be standing next to them.

The practice sword dissolved from Ravan’s hand.

A dark sword materialized in its place.

Ravan turned toward the village gate.

The village was still looking for Player XXXX.

Ravan walked toward the gate.
