Chapter 1

1

The hospital corridor smelled of antiseptic, but Ethan Wade barely noticed. He had been driving too fast ever since the doctor’s call came less than an hour ago, his voice grave.

“Come to the hospital immediately.”

Ethan had asked what happened, but the doctor had refused to explain over the phone.

Now, Ethan stood outside the emergency room, his chest rising and falling heavily as he stared at the closed doors.

Jenny was inside—his wife, the woman he had loved for most of his life, his childhood sweetheart and the girl he had once promised to protect for the rest of his life.

His hands trembled… something was wrong.

The doors finally opened, and a doctor stepped out.

“Mr. Wade?”

Ethan immediately approached him. “Yes. How is Jenny?”

The doctor hesitated.

That hesitation made Ethan’s heart sink.

“Is Jenny okay?”

“She’s alive.”

Ethan froze.

The doctor lowered his eyes. “But…”

Ethan’s voice became strained. “But what?”

The doctor took a breath. “I’m sorry, Mr. Wade.”

Ethan stared at him, his heart pounding in his chest.

“For what?”

The doctor’s expression softened.

The doctor’s expression softened. “She suffered severe blood loss. We tried everything we could.”

Ethan’s face went pale. “Blood loss?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The doctor hesitated again before saying quietly, “She was sixteen weeks pregnant.”

Silence.

Ethan didn’t understand. For several seconds, the words simply refused to register.

“Pregnant?”

“Yes.”

His lips parted. “Sixteen… weeks?”

The doctor nodded.

Ethan stared blankly at him.

Sixteen weeks. Four months. Four months of pregnancy. Four months of a life growing inside his wife. Four months of a child he hadn’t even known existed.

His child.

“How…” His voice cracked. “How did I not know?”

The doctor looked uncomfortable.

Ethan’s heart seemed to stop.

He suddenly remembered all the times she had refused to eat with him, all the mornings she had left the house early, all the nights she had come home late, and all the times he had asked if something was wrong, only to receive a cold, “I’m fine.”

He had believed her because he loved and trusted her.

Then another question struck him.

“What happened to the baby?”

The doctor’s silence answered before his words did.

Ethan’s eyes reddened. “No.”

“Mr. Wade—”

“No.”

He shook his head, his voice trembling with desperation. “Tell me the baby is alive.”

The doctor looked down.

“I’m sorry. We couldn’t save the fetus.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

For a moment, the entire corridor seemed to disappear. There were no footsteps, no nurses, no hospital machines—nothing. Only those words echoed in his mind.

We couldn’t save the baby.

His baby…Their baby.

The child he had never known he was going to have. A child he had already lost.

Ethan slowly lowered his head, his fingers curling into fists.

“Why?”

The doctor explained as gently as he could. “Mrs. Jenny had donated a significant amount of blood earlier because another patient urgently needed a transfusion.”

Ethan looked up sharply. “Another patient?”

The doctor nodded. “David Herman.”

Everything inside Ethan went cold.

Of course. David.

It was always David.

Ethan laughed once, but there was no humor in it. “Of course.”

The doctor frowned. “I’m sorry?”

“Nothing.”

Ethan turned toward the emergency room. “Can I see her?”

“Yes. But she’s still weak.”

Ethan didn’t answer. He simply walked inside.

Jenny lay motionless on the hospital bed, her skin pale and an IV attached to her arm. Her eyes were closed, and for the first time in years, Ethan looked at his wife without knowing what he was supposed to feel.

She looked pale and fragile, nothing like the woman he remembered.

This was the woman he had loved for years, the woman he had promised to protect, and the woman he had eventually married.

Yet lately, she had grown distant, constantly leaving home to see another man—David.

Ethan had never trusted him, but Jenny had always defended him whenever Ethan expressed his concerns.

He had tried to convince himself that he was simply being paranoid, that there had to be an innocent explanation for the distance that had grown between them.

Now, everything made sense.

Jenny had been pregnant for sixteen weeks without telling him. She had given her blood to David, and their child was now dead.

His chest tightened at the thought, but before he could say anything, Jenny slowly opened her eyes. The moment she saw him standing beside her, her expression changed.

“Ethan…”

He stared at her, pain filling his eyes. “You were pregnant.”

Jenny lowered her gaze. “Yes.”

“For sixteen weeks?”

She said nothing.

Ethan’s expression hardened as he struggled to contain the emotions rising inside him. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was going to.”

“When?”

Jenny couldn’t answer.

Ethan gave a bitter laugh, the sound laced with hurt and disbelief. “When the baby was born?”

“Ethan, please.”

“No.”

He stared at her for a long moment, his voice quiet but firm.

“I want to know.”

Jenny looked at him, hesitation flickering across her pale face.

“Why did you donate blood to David?”

“Ethan, David needed it.”

“And I needed to know my wife was carrying my child.”

Jenny frowned. “I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want another argument.”

“Another argument?” Ethan stared at her. “You kept our child a secret from me for sixteen weeks, and you’re worried about an argument?”

Jenny looked away.

“You know how you feel about David.”

“Exactly,” Ethan said bitterly. “I don’t trust him. And every time he needs you, you’re there.”

“Because he’s sick.”

“And what about me?” His voice cracked. “I’ve been your husband for years. When you were scared, who stayed beside you? When you were sick, who took care of you? I did. I was always there.”

Jenny’s fingers tightened around the blanket.

“I never made another woman more important than you.”

“Don’t talk about David like that.”

Those words hit him harder than anything else.

“Unbelievable.”

“Ethan—”

“You lost our child because of him.”

“Don’t blame David.”

“I should! You chose to give him your blood.”

“Because he needed me!”

“And our baby needed you too!”

Silence filled the room.

Ethan’s eyes reddened.

“You were sixteen weeks pregnant, Jenny. Sixteen weeks. And I didn’t even know.”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

Jenny had no answer.

“When the baby started moving? When your stomach became impossible to hide?”

“Stop it.”

“No. You want me to understand you? Then understand me. David is always first.”

“That’s not true.”

“It is. You keep choosing him over me.”

“Because he saved me!” Jenny’s voice broke. “I’ll never forget what he did for me.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You still believe that?”

“Yes.”

“He didn’t save you, Jenny. You just refuse to see him for what he is.”

“You refuse to accept that I owe him.”

“You don’t owe him your marriage.”

Jenny reached for his hand.

“Ethan, please.”

He looked down at her fingers. Once, her touch could calm him. Now, it felt empty.

“I loved you,” he said quietly.

“I still love you.”

Ethan slowly pulled his hand away.

“That’s the problem.”

His voice trembled.

“I’ve spent years loving you enough to forgive everything. Your distance. Your coldness. The way you kept pushing me away. But I can’t forgive this.”

“Ethan…”

“Our child is dead.”

Jenny covered her mouth as a sob escaped.

“And even now, when our baby is dead, you’re still protecting David.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“But that’s what you did.”

Ethan looked at the woman he had loved since childhood. For years, he had believed they would always find their way back to each other.

But something inside him had finally broken. There was no anger left.

Only exhaustion.

For the first time, a thought entered his mind with absolute clarity.

‘Maybe I should divorce Jenny.’
