Chapter One: The Awakening

Kael’s fingers trembled as he adjusted the straps of the burlap sack slung over his shoulder. The early morning mist hung heavy in the air, curling around the rugged peaks like a serpent guarding its treasure. Every step he took on the narrow mountain trail felt like a betrayal to the home he was leaving behind. He glanced back once, his village hidden beneath the fog, its comforting warmth already feeling like a distant memory.

The village of Myrefall was nestled deep in the cradle of the Frostpeak Mountains. To outsiders, it was a quaint, peaceful place—a haven for weary travelers and merchants seeking rest before braving the treacherous paths further north. But for Kael, it had become a prison. A gilded cage where his dreams and questions had no room to grow.

He’d tried to ignore the restlessness, dismissing it as a phase. But then the dreams began—vivid, haunting visions of flames consuming the sky, wings spanning entire horizons, and a voice. A voice calling his name with a mixture of urgency and sorrow. It stirred something in him, something ancient and unrelenting, and he knew he couldn’t stay in Myrefall any longer.

"Kael!"

The sharp voice cut through the silence, startling him. He stopped in his tracks, his heart sinking. He knew that voice.

Turning slowly, he saw Ryn running up the trail. Her dark curls bounced with every step, and her face, usually so serene, was flushed with frustration. She was dressed in her usual hunting leathers, her bow slung across her back, but Kael could tell she hadn’t come to hunt. She’d come for him.

"Ryn, go back," he said before she could reach him.

She skidded to a halt, planting her hands on her hips. "Go back? That’s all you have to say? You were just going to leave without a word? Without saying goodbye?"

Kael sighed, running a hand through his tousled hair. "I didn’t want to make this harder than it already is."

"Harder for who? You or me?" Her voice cracked, and Kael winced. "You’re not just leaving the village, Kael. You’re leaving me. Us. Your family."

"I have to do this, Ryn." His voice was quiet but firm. "Something’s changing in me. I can feel it. I can’t explain it, but I know I don’t belong here anymore."

Ryn’s expression softened, but her eyes were filled with worry. "Kael, we’ve all felt out of place at some point. But running away won’t solve anything."

"This isn’t just about feeling out of place," he said, stepping closer. "It’s… it’s like there’s something inside me. Something I don’t understand. The dreams, the fire… they’re not normal."

Before Ryn could respond, the ground beneath them trembled. The mountain trail shuddered, sending loose stones skittering down the cliffs. A deep, guttural roar echoed through the air, freezing them both in place.

"What was that?" Ryn whispered, her voice barely audible over the rumbling.

Kael’s heart pounded as he scanned the cliffs above. Another roar, louder this time, shook the ground, and a massive boulder tumbled onto the trail ahead, blocking their path.

And then it appeared.

A creature unlike anything Kael had ever seen descended from the cliff. Its body was covered in shimmering, obsidian scales that reflected the faint morning light. Its eyes burned like molten gold, and its claws left trails of fire wherever they touched the ground. The air around it shimmered with heat, distorting its monstrous figure.

"A drakos," Ryn gasped, her voice filled with awe and terror.

Kael’s blood ran cold. The drakos were creatures of legend, said to be the offspring of dragons and spirits of the underworld. They hadn’t been seen in centuries, and their appearance was always a harbinger of chaos.

The drakos’s gaze locked onto Kael, and for a moment, the world seemed to stand still. Then it roared, a sound so powerful it shook the very air around them.

"Run, Ryn!" Kael shouted, pushing her back.

But Ryn didn’t move. Her hand flew to her bow, and before Kael could stop her, she notched an arrow and fired. The arrow struck the drakos’s shoulder, but it barely flinched. Instead, its eyes narrowed, and it lunged forward with terrifying speed.

Kael didn’t think. His body moved on instinct, placing himself between Ryn and the beast. He raised his arms, expecting to feel the drakos’s claws tear into him.

But something else happened.

Flames erupted from his palms, forming a blazing shield that stopped the drakos in its tracks. The creature snarled, its molten eyes widening in surprise.

Kael stared at his hands, his mind racing. The flames didn’t burn him; they felt like an extension of himself, wild but controlled.

"Kael!" Ryn’s voice snapped him out of his daze.

The drakos recovered quickly, circling them like a predator sizing up its prey. Kael clenched his fists, and the flames responded, flaring brighter. He didn’t know how he was doing it, but he didn’t have time to question it.

The drakos lunged again, but this time, Kael was ready. He thrust his hand forward, and a burst of fire shot out, striking the beast in the chest. The force sent it crashing into the cliffside, but Kael knew it wasn’t over.

The flames around him began to intensify, spreading to the ground and forming a ring of fire around him and Ryn. His vision blurred, and the voice from his dreams echoed in his mind once more.

"Awaken, Phoenix’s heir."

The last thing Kael saw was the drakos retreating into the shadows, its eyes glowing with a mixture of fear and anger. Then the flames consumed him, and everything went black.
