Chapter 5

Outside….

Jeff and Sophia stood up from the ground where they were being discarded by the security guards in obedience to Ava's order.

Jeff wiped himself with his hand, his eyes red with anger. He didn't utter a word until they arrived at where their car was parked and got into it.

“That bastard!” Jeff thundered through gritted teeth. "He thinks he has escaped just because Miss Ava mistook him for someone else.”

He chuckled darkly. "He may have succeeded in deceiving Miss Ava, but I won’t spare him! I'll make him pay for this humiliation!”

“Yes, darling! Deal with him so he'll know his place next time," Sophia said in agreement.

Back at the mall.

Although Daniel had hesitated earlier, he later agreed to follow Ava into her office with his bag loaded with items. Ava's office was spacious and beautiful. Everything was in an orderly manner.

“Please, sit down," Ava told Daniel as she closed the door behind her and stepped fully into her own office. "And please, make yourself comfortable.”

Daniel didn't think much. He sat down opposite Ava.

"I'm Ava. You?”

"Call me Daniel.”

"Alright, Dan, what would you like me to offer you? Juice? Wine?” Ava asked with a smile.

"None,” Daniel replied, showing no interest in her kind gesture. Ava frowned dramatically. Daniel noticed her expression before saying. "Okay, fine. Water.”

Ava's smile returned. She stood up and walked to the refrigerator situated at the side of her office. Bringing out a chilled bottle of water, she poured it into a glass, then walked back, giving it to Daniel.

Daniel accepted. "Thanks.” After taking a sip, he dropped the glass on the table and looked at Ava, who was now sitting opposite him.

He hesitated. "So, why am I here?” he asked, pretending not to know the reason.

Ava shifted on her seat, then exhaled. “After you healed my—-"

“I'm sorry, but I didn't do anything," Daniel interrupted, his expression unreadable. “I know nothing about what happened back there.”

Ava looked at him and didn't believe his words. “But we had our family doctor check on my grandpa, and he confirmed he was perfectly fine. He asked how it happened, and I couldn't explain."

Her gaze stayed on Daniel. “But I'm certain it has something to do with you.”

Daniel smirked. “Your guess is wrong." After responding flatly to her, Daniel stood up. “I think I'll have to leave now."

He was close to the exit door when Ava spoke.

“How about your new appearance?" She asked, stepping forward. “I noticed it. I saw it change. What possible explanation do you have for that?"

Daniel turned to look at her but didn't respond.

“See…” Ava continued speaking. "We aren't going to do anything bad to you. In fact, my grandpa is ready to hand you a check of two million dollars for saving him.”

Daniel knew the intention of that. However, he wasn't ready to disclose any of this to anyone.

“And I still say, I don't know what happened back there. I did nothing. Maybe the good Lord decided to heal your grandpa by himself. So, I'll suggest he gives that money to the orphanage homes instead."

Without waiting for a response, Daniel turned and left, leaving Ava alone in the office. Ava continued to stare in the empty direction without saying a word.

Then she muttered. "That guy is lying. There's something he's hiding.”

Saying that, she turned and returned to her office table. Retrieving her phone, Ava put a call through after unlocking it.

"Yes, I have found him again, but he said he has nothing to do with what happened to Grandpa. However, I'm skeptical. I don’t believe his words. I'll investigate more about him.”

Meanwhile, after exiting Ava's office, Daniel leisurely strolled down the street, heading home. He looked around the buzzing street with different faces walking up and down the road; he couldn't help but shake his head.

“The world is just full of activities. People are going about doing their own thing just to eat." He shook his head. “I just wish the universe could reward laziness, so many people wouldn't be bothered about working their asses off."

Just as he shifted his gaze, he saw a cab approaching where he was, and he waved his hand, flagging it down. Entering the cab, Daniel told the driver where he was going.

Meanwhile, a man wearing a hoodie, leaning inside a car that was parked across the road. As he saw a young man entering his apartment, he nodded vehemently.

“I know where he lives now, let me quickly inform ma'am." He brought out his phone and put a call across.

“Yes, ma'am, I followed him. He's staying an apartment in a slum area. The house is located in an alley.”

“Just send me the address," a female voice said from the other end of the line.

“Alright….sent.”

The woman confirmed receiving it before giving a brief instruction. "And please, leave there right away, don't make him see you."

The man nodded even though he wasn't seen and as the call ended, he looked toward the building again before starting the car and drove off.

Subordinate 4 rolled his eyes around the place. “Hey, where’s that biggy and skinny?" He asked, as he saw no sign of their other associates. Those weren't their names; they were just fond of each other, anyway. Subordinate 3 glanced around and frowned. “Could they be in the backyard? Let me quickly have a look.” Subordinate 4 stood there watching as subordinate 3 took off on his heels and started striding toward the backyard. As subordinate 3 was out of sight, subordinate 4 muttered. “I knew that chunky isn't capable of doing anything. He's just an overloaded fool.”Truthfully, subordinate 4 was jealous of subordinate 1 for the position he was

That noise was from the moment that Damian's subordinate struck the gate with his axe.“Could it be that they're here?" Daniel muttered that before rushing to hide. His grip around the rod in his hand tightened as he gazed toward the door. “I'm waiting for them…" Meanwhile, Damian's four men weren't ready to knock. Hence, subordinate 1—the chubby one— without realizing that the door wasn't locked, moved backward before rushing forward, slamming himself against the door. The door burst open wide, the daylight shining into the living room. He almost fell to the ground as he stormed into the room. His gaze scanned the whole place in a few seconds.“You two…check the rooms upstairs,” subordinate 1 ordered as he pointed to subord

He believed that, as a man, it was his responsibility to take care of the woman and not the other way round. Ava was annoyed. “What do you mean? What I ordered isn't up to $300, and you are saying you want to refund me? Really? Please, stop that. I did it without expecting a refund." Naturally sensing that Ava was vexed, Daniel quickly apologized and said, "I'm sorry for that. I didn't mean to get you angry. I was only trying to stay the cool guy that I am.” He intentionally used that to make Ava smile a little. And she did. However, she didn't say a word. Aren't you supposed to be monitoring what's going on there?” Ava only smiled at him. Then, she took out her phone and called a number. She talked briefly to the person before ending the call. She then looked at Daniel and said, "It's settled now. They'll take good care of everything in my absence. So, I'm free to go with you now, right?" Daniel swallowed hard. “No problem." With that, the two of them walked out of the house. Daniel locked the gate with the keys that Luke had given him before he exited.
