Chapter 1

“Of all the people in the world, why does it have to be your face I get to see first? Please, get out of my sight. I want to have nothing to do with you.”

Maxwell scrutinized the lady before him in a dirty look and began to walk away. At that moment, all he felt for Angel was hate and his plan was to exert his revenge when the time was right. However, she ran after him, stopping right in front of him.

Maxwell had just been released from prison and was stunned to see that it was the b*tch standing before him.

The same woman that had plotted with the Morgans and sent him to where he was coming out from.

“Please Max, let me drop you off.” Angel was standing before him and pleading with a sober face.

“I know you're angry with me right now. I'm also angry with myself for what I did and I want to make up for it. Let me make it up to you.”

“Hmph.” Maxwell's lips curled into a sneer as he chuckled.

“You want to make it up to me. Haha. That's really interesting and so nice of you.”

Folding his arms across his chest, Maxwell shot her a glare. “If you want to make it up to me, you can start with turning back the hands of time and stopping me from going to prison.” He angrily blurted out.

Angel tilted her head in shame. It was true that she promised to make it up to him but he was asking for the impossible. There was no way she could undo what she did in the past.

“Um, Maxwell.” Angel lifted her head and her eyes met with the death stare from him.

“You know I cannot change what has happened in the past. However, I'm here now to correct my mistakes. I was wrong to have sided with those people. They're all evil.”

“But you took money from them and set me up. Let me guess, they've turned against you. Well, I don't care about you or any of them. All I know is that you should brace yourself for what's coming because I'm going to make you pay. You and your accomplices will pay dearly for what you did to me.”

Again, Maxwell walked out on her and stopped at the roadside where he planned on boarding a cab. Shoving his left hand in his trousers pocket, he took out the little money he had. It would be barely enough to serve him for the day.

The money was given to him by a prison warden just before he stepped out of the gigantic gate of the prison. The man had noticed his good conduct and believed that Maxwell was a good person. He decided to help him with some money knowing that Maxwell was penniless.

“You can use it for your fare to town and look for something to do to help yourself. That's all I can do for you?”

Maxwell reminisced on the words of the man and smiled. However, his smile was short lived as Angel, once again stood before him.

With a deep frown on his hands, Maxwell almost charged at her but managed to restrain himself. He was planning to shove the pestering lady aside but stopped himself.

“What do you want from me?”

“I just want to drive you home.” Angel pointed to her black BMW that was parked at the side of the road. The prison was located in a provincial area of Berlin which was very distant from the city.

“Well, I have no home and it's all thanks to you. Now, can you let me be?”

Maxwell tried many times to stop a cab all to no avail as all cars refused to stop for him. He even began to think that they were afraid of him because he was an ex convict. Waving the thought aside, he continued hailing a cab or any car that would take him away from that place, especially from the lady who was still standing there while watching his futile quest to flag down a cab.

“I have something to show to you. You should come with me and I promise you won't regret it.”

Maxwell ignored her and continued to try his luck. After an hour of futile attempts to get a cab, he gave up. Angel, on the other hand, was happy about the situation. She thought that fate was at work and wanted her to right the wrong she had done to Maxwell.

Angel stepped forward. “Since the cabs are refusing to stop for you, why don't you enter the one that has been waiting for you?”

Maxwell was quiet. After having a mental battle, he started walking to Angel's car.

Once he had settled on the passengers’ seat, he said to her unapologetically “This doesn't mean that I've forgiven you or won't exert my revenge. Just take me out of here and never show me your face again.”

“I'll try.” Angel replied with a smile on her face. She was grateful for having a chance to right her wrong towards Maxwell. Even if it was going to take him ages to forgive her, she'll keep asking for his forgiveness.

Maxwell has no one to call his family. The only people who he regarded as family plotted and sent him to prison because he secretly married their daughter.

The Morgans were the ones who brought him up as a child when he lost his parents. Unfortunately, they didn't regard him as family and treated him with contempt and disrespect. It became worse when he and Valerie fell in love with each other.

Because they knew that Valerie's parents, Victor and Patricia won't accept their union, the young couple secretly got married and this action fueled their hatred towards him.

The Morgans had several times tried to separate them because they wanted Valerie to get married into a wealthy family. However, the latter had gone ahead and gotten married to a nobody who grew up at their mercy.

“Can I show you something?” Angel jolted him out of his reverie and Maxwell glared at her first before replying nonchalantly.

“What is it? I hope it's not something that'll send me back to prison?”

Angel chuckled. “Believe me when I say that I regret everything I did to you. I was driven by the handsome reward they promised me which I needed so badly at that moment.”

Maxwell was quiet. He wasn't interested in her story. Although he had nowhere to go, all he wanted was to leave that place. He had spent two years out of the five years he was supposed to spend inside the prison so it felt good to be a free man again. It was his good conduct that shortened the sentence. His name was enlisted among people to be pardoned.

Without another word, Angel brought out a file and gave it to him. “Go through these documents and you'll be stunned at the content.”

Reluctantly, Maxwell opened the file and could not believe his eyes.

With jaws dropped, he lifted his face and gave Angel a questioning look.
