Jack hit the ground first, his boots thumping on concrete.

Below, trucks waited with soft-running engines.

He jumped in the front one, door slamming behind him.

Tires squealing on curves, the truck raced through deserted streets.

Jack's mind raced with thoughts of the Vault under attack.

His shoulder from the fight hurt with each bump. He stared out the window, city lights blurring by.

They arrived quickly at the Bronx subway entrance. Smoke curling out of the secret entrance.

Gunshots echoed from below like thunder. Jack's stomach twisted with worry.

With his gun in hand, he led the way down the stairs.

The steps were slick and wet.

At the bottom was a Legion soldier with blood on his uniform. Jack quickly knelt and searched for a pulse, but there wasn't one.

Bullets bounced off walls like ping-pong balls as the siege raged through the corridors.

With their weapons blazing, Darius's mercenaries charged forward.

The Legion shot from behind corners, holding the line.

Jack took out a merc with a clean headshot, causing him to fall silently.

Victoria stood in the middle of the chaos, with her cane in one hand, a small gun in the other.

Her white hair was messy, face pale with fear.

She fired at a merc, causing him to duck even though she missed.

Tears and shame filled her eyes as they met Jack's.

Jack ran to her, dodging bullets that flew past his ear.

He grabbed her arm and pulled her behind a metal crate.

She dropped her cane, the clatter lost in the noise. She stared at him, her hands trembling.

Victoria spoke in a broken voice. “I'm sorry, but Darius threatened me. He forced me to open the door. But here, take this map, it leads to Darius's tunnels."

Jack took the map, his fingers brushing hers. Her hand was cold and trembling.

His voice remained harsh even though he could see sympathy in his own eyes. "Stay down."

Inside the hall, Mike was sweating and bandaging a wound on his leg.

Despite the discomfort, his voice was firm as he gave instructions to soldiers.

When he spotted Jack, his smile vanished. With relief in his eyes, he gave a single nod.

Jack joined the fight, bullets echoing loudly off the concrete.

He shot three mercs in a row, each falling with a thud.

The smell of blood and gunpowder filled the hall.

Step by step, the Legion pushed back.

Just as they were about to defeat the Merc, Alex was dragged in as bait, his hands tied, face white with fear.

His eyes darted everywhere as he cowered in a corner.

One of the merc grabbed him, using him as a shield. But Jack shot the merc's knee, making him drop Alex.

In order to save himself, Alex revealed a secret. His voice was high in panic as he spoke quickly.

"Darius has more men in the tunnels. I saw his plans."

Jack shoved him away, disgust on his face. Alex hit the wall and slid down.

His eyes were filled with tears. He looked small and broken.

Just then Emily arrived unannounced, sneaking in through a side door.

Her green eyes were fierce for the first time.

She used Jack's self-defense tips to disarm a merc.

The man fell, surprised on his face.

Jack saw her from across the hall. His heart skipped a beat.

He nodded, but kept his distance.

They pushed into the tunnels and discovered documents pertaining to Darius's scheme to cause mayhem by flooding the subways.

There were papers all over the floor. Jack's expression was gloomy as he quickly read them.

It was a vast and cruel plot.

In order to trap the remaining Mercs, Jack sabotaged the Vault doors

He turned on a switch and the doors slammed.

From inside, Mercs pounded on them.

He then broadcast their surrender live on every channel for the city to watch.

People cheered in their homes.

But just then deep in the tunnels, an rigged explosive went off.

The ground shook like an earthquake and rocks fell.

Mike pushed Jack out of the way.

The section collapsed. The air was heavy with dust.

When the air cleared, Mike had been buried under rocks.

His radio gasped: "Boss... go on without me."

Jack dug with his hands, rocks cutting his skin. His face twisted with worry.

The soldiers ran to help, pulling stones away. But Mike's hand was stuck.

Jack pulled harder, his arms burning.

Then he saw Mike's face, his eyes had closed.

He was no longer breathing.

Jack sat back, dust on his face. His eyes wet with unshed tears.

The tunnel went silent. Something broke inside Jack

Emily ran in, her dress torn. She saw Mike and stopped.

Her hand went to her mouth. Tears falling out of her eyes quietly.

Jack stood up slowly. His voice came rough. "Get the body out."
