“If I'm fake, why are you still alive now?” The system bit back, almost as if it could feel emotions.

“Bring out the master card.” Alvin instructed, not minding the system’s bickering at all. He was in a very good mood, none of his previous sourness could be seen on his face. Money truly answereth all things.

He heard a low buzzing sound in his head and a black card appeared in his hand. His name and QR code was printed in gold on the card. He gasped, his eyes burning with excitement.

“Isn't this the rumored vvip black card that less than one percent of the world’s population has access to?”

“Of course. Your current account balance can only be fit for such a card. In the future, more money will roll in as long as you complete your missions successfully. Your card might even be upgraded to a supreme card. This time, you were compensated with ten times the amount you spent to get the bike here and other things. You even got a coupon. You only need to walk into any real estate company of your choice, select a preferred villa and the system will pay for it.”

Alvin was giddy with excitement. He had never seen so much money in his life. He had been very depressed when all the companies he applied to refused to hire him, despite the fact he had a first class and graduated top of his class. Not counting the fact that he interned at the Carter group thanks to grandpa.

He was meant to be retained in the group in readiness for when the old man will name him the heir. But he was met with numerous opposition from all sides. Sonya even threatened him with suicide. No one wanted the old man to name his beloved useless son in-law the heir when there were numerous blood relations eagerly waiting to take their own chunk of the inheritance, despite the fact that Alvin’s performance was stellar during the internship. Not even his performance could prevent him from being attacked at all corners.

However, he now had more money than he imagined. As long as he continues to complete missions, there will be no need for a 9-5 job, and he will soon be wealthier than both the Carter and Coleman family combined.

‘Sonya Carter, Fred Coleman, you both wait for me. I will destroy everything you hold dear and ruin your family, I will show you that living is more painful than dying.’

“Are you alright?” Leah asked hesitantly on seeing the twisted expression on his face.

She had been observing him, noticing a plethora of emotions on his face, almost as if he was conversing with an invisible being. She had watched his ears to see if he was wearing a bluetooth earbud, but he was not, making her incredibly confused and afraid. The young man who rescued her wasn't crazy, was he?

Alvin finally noticed her and smiled.

“I'm fine. It's almost dawn, let's go eat and find a change of clean clothes.”

Alvin didn't notice how far the distance from the roof to the ground floor was while climbing up, but he sure did as he went down. This was because the adrenaline pushing him on had disappeared.

He saw the motorcycle there and decided to park it properly, out of the way. Otherwise, the neighborhood security might confiscate it.

“Sir, there is no transport available in this area till seven in the morning. How do we leave?”

“My name is Alvin, don't call me sir. Our age difference isn't that much. There's a shopping mall two streets away, we will just stop there.”

Leah was immediately dumbfounded.

“Ah? Starlight mall is the biggest shopping center specializing in luxury items. The cheapest clothes there are sold for at least $1000. Let's wait at the park for the transport companies to resume. Then we can go to cheaper malls, or the market.” She muttered, quickly trying to talk him out of it.

During her good days, she could buy any luxury product she liked. But nowadays, she was as broke as a church mouse. Besides, the staff there fully recognized her. She didn't need more insults to reopen her wounds, so she hesitated a lot, not wanting to go.

Alvin smiled and patted her hair.

“Don't worry. Big brother has promised to take you out to buy something nice. I will definitely fulfill my promise. Let's go buy clothes and eat breakfast. Leave the bills for big brother.” He boasted with his chest puffed out, feeling quite proud of himself.

In ten minutes, they arrived at the mall and entered. The security were still having their morning coffee since people normally don't visit so early in the morning, except for those who messed up their clothes after going to the bar. Alvin caught sight of his reflection on the glass door, making his step halt for a while. He looked dirty and muddy with some parts of his shirt torn off. Blood matted some parts of his body, making for an awful sight.

He shrugged and continued on his way to the clothing section. He would just change into something better once inside.

“Hey! Stop right there! What's a smelly beggar doing in the esteemed Starlight mall? Who let you in? What was the security doing? How did you creep past the entrance?” An angry looking sales attendant roared, blocking them with a scowl on her face and her arm outstretched.

Alvin frowned and stopped for a while.

“Is that how you treat your customers? What do you mean by beggars?”

The girl laughed loudly, alongside the other attendant who came closer due to the commotion.

“Is your lowly self qualified to be our customer? Open your dog eyes wide and see; this is Starlight mall, a place meant for the rich and the powerful, not smelly paupers like you. How dare you dirty our eyes by coming here? Do you seriously expect people of our class to attend to lowly things like you?” She asked in an exaggerated tone.

“New mission alert!” The system suddenly announced, accompanied by the blare of alarm which went off in Alvin’s mind, distracting him from the argument.

“Ah? Another mission? Didn't I just finish the first one a while ago?”

Alvin’s mind worked fast, doing a quick evaluation, thoughts snapping together like blades. The grandmaster was wearing a concealment artefact to hide his true cultivation, probably the black cloak draped around his shoulders, drinking in light and truth. There was also no telling how many sick tricks and trump cards he had in his hands. It was better to end things early than to drag it out into an exhausting tug of war, a dance with death that bled minutes he didn’t have. Wasting time would only complicate matters. Most importantly, Aurelio was still home, waiting for him to return, his small face pressed to the window, trusting. The grandmaster’s gaze sharpened beneath the cloak, two coals of malice flaring. “Oh? You’re indeed formidable. Even better. A puppet made from you must be insanely powerful.” Alvin chuckled and disappeared from the spot, escaping from the devious sneak attack the grandmaster had sent, a thread of corrosive qi slicing where his throat had been a heartb

Alvin stopped beside the girl. She was breathing heavily, a trace of blood by the side of her lips. Eyes defiant but broken — a contradiction that tore at something deep in his chest. He stopped beside her and pulled her outside, away from the others, away from their hate. When they got to a secluded area, he exhaled and looked at her. “Wait here. I will hurry inside and check a few things. I will be back to send you to safety in a short while.” The girl chuckled. A sarcastic, grating sound that went straight to the brain, like nails on bone. Alvin paused, briefly turning to check on her. “You want to bring me to safety? Ridiculous. You should worry about staying alive first.” “I will definitely return,” Alvin snapped back, his voice hard as tempered steel, “and rescue you. Even from yourself.” Something in the girl’s eyes shifted, a crack in the void, and she fisted a handful of her ragged clothes, face drawn into a wince, her groan hanging somewhere around her neck and nev

  • ESCAPE

Alvin could feel the children’s resentful gazes, and the fear festering around them…thick, acrid, contagious. “Stay still. I won’t let anyone harm you.” His voice was low, iron-clad, a promise forged in blood. With a slight move of his hands, a circle appeared around the kids, barriers of defensive light rising above them like tides called by the moon. He flicked his fingers again, and reinforced shields followed, circling the kids, ready to reflect the attacks, ready to bleed for them if they had to. Inside the barrier, a boy hissed, full of anger, his voice cracking. “Why’s she inside here too? She will just endanger the others.” The girl gave him the side eye but kept silent, her face a blank wall. The rich girl dragged in a shaky breath, face contorting, feeling incredibly wronged. Someone compromised their safety, yet wasn’t kicked out. It sat in her throat like glass. A sixteen-year-old boy pointed at the traitor, his finger shaking. “I’ve got my eyes on you. If you t

  • SHE'S DAMAGED

Alvin’s heart stopped, a dead, cold stall in his chest, and he looked back at the children shivering in fear. A greater percentage of them were putting on brave faces, trying not to show the visceral fear tearing through them, shredding them from the inside out. “Don’t be afraid. I will protect you all. You just need to keep up with my pace.” His voice was low, steady. An anchor in a sea of panic. Unlike the first batch, this group of captured kids were mostly teens with the youngest around ten years old. So there were no crying babies to be comforted. Everyone had a rough idea of what was expected of them to ensure they left safely. Fear had taught them faster than any teacher ever could. Alvin stopped mid-way. “Wait here.” He zoomed out, toward the approaching soldiers, a black streak against the dark. Two minutes later, he returned, blood dripping from the dagger in his left hand, each drop hitting the ground like a clock counting down. “Hurry, more are coming.” The kid

  • TRAITOR

Alvin’s heart skipped, a brutal, physical jolt in his chest. He turned to the kid. “Be quiet.” The fifteen-year-old boy clamped a palm over the mouth of the child who screamed, his own eyes wide, swimming in raw, undiluted terror. Alvin sent out primal fire from his solar physique, white-hot, merciless, born of a star’s rage, alongside loaded syringes that tore through the air like bullets into the bodies of the corpse soldiers blocking them. Only low growls followed, wet and inhuman, before the corpse soldiers turned into piles of ashes, collapsing without even the grace of a death cry. The children were trembling behind him, fear rooted so deeply in their hearts it had become part of their marrow, part of their bones. “Let’s move. They must have noticed something is wrong.” His voice was low, edged with iron. He moved a long, loose rope around the waist of each child, connecting them in a neat line to himself to ensure no one got left behind. It wasn’t tight enough to make

  • Moving in the chaos

Alvin knew waiting for cars to come out and slip in wouldn’t work again. They’d adapted. He had to be faster. “As I move, blind the cameras while I flash through. Don’t take long enough for them to know something is wrong.” He tapped Ryker and gave him a subtle nod — not reassurance, but command. Using his memory of the villa’s veins and bones from the system’s map, he zapped to the side where he recalled the security to be a little weaker, a joining point in the formation where two wards met and bickered like tired guards. He soared into the air, diving straight toward the barrier, a pointed, drill-like object clenched in his hand. He pierced through the barrier and dove into the villa headfirst, a bullet of intent. The object punched a hole in the formation, and he passed through like a water current…soundless, shapeless…leaving the barrier to automatically repair itself behind him, sealing shut as if he’d never been there. He rolled on the floor and zoomed in a half-squat u
