Chapter 1: Old memories

Chapter 1

Ten years ago, around 10:10 p.m.

The door burst open with a loud bang. And five men, their faces hidden behind black masks, carrying guns and knives, stormed inside the room.

A father was startled, pulling his little child to his side with quivering hands.

Kane Wade. He shook uncontrollably against his father's arm.

His father was already on the ground, his forehead sweaty.

“W—who are you,” Kane’s father stammered, his lips shivering, “and what do you want from us?”

He continued, still shaking. "Is it money, property documents, or what? You can have them all, but please, don't harm us.”

The men exchanged looks.

One amongst the men—the leader—shook his head, his face filled with a sinister smile. “I’m sorry, but we are sent to kill you.”

"What?” Kane's father's heart drummed. Even Kane’s. He was just fourteen, but he knew what that meant. "Kill me? Why? I have offended no one.”

He pressed Kane against himself tightly. "Please, don't kill us." He sobbed.

“My father is a good person," Kane was crying, tears flowing down his cheeks already, “don't kill him, please."

However, the man shook his head. "I'm sorry,” he repeated.

Without uttering another word, he aimed the gun at Kane’s mother's forehead, and the next thing……

Bam!

The bullet struck his forehead. Once.

His body dropped down flat on the ground instantly. Lifeless.

Blood instantly spread across the floor, just like water.

Kane stayed in the pool, his vision completely blurred. His fists clenched, chest clutched, and his eyes red with fury.

They had just taken his world, what meant everything to him, from him.

His knuckles turned white.

“Wake up, Dad.” He jerked him with trembling hands, as if trying to bring him back to life, but he was gone.

Consumed with rage, Kane looked up instantly and shot a glare directly at the person who had just shot his father.

His teeth gritted.

Within a second, he jumped at him, hitting him. “You killed my father. How dare you kill!” He screamed, furious, filled with resentment. "I'm gonna kill you too!"

The man looked down at him.

Hesitated. Before ceasing his hand.

“I'm sorry, kid. Just doing my job.”

With that, he asked the leader. “Boss, what should we do with this little boy?"

“Shoot him too." The leader answered coldly.

The man nodded.

However, before he could even raise his gun…..

Wee-wooooo

The sound of a siren wailed from outside the estate into the compound.

“Fuck! The police are here." One cursed.

“Let's leave. Now!" The leader commanded, already terrified.

“What about the little kid?"

The leader was reluctant, his head moving sideways as if thinking of something.

Finally, he brought out his gun and put it into Kane’s palm.

"That,” he mumbled, tilting, “will make it look like he angrily killed him.”

A pause.

"Now, let's go.”

They began to retreat.

But as the last man, without a gun, was about to leave….

Kane quickly raised the gun. “Stop right there," his broken voice echoed. “You joined them to kill my Dad. I won't spare you!"

The man turned, a faint smile plastered on his face. "Don't be silly, kid. There's nothing in—"

He couldn't complete his statement when—

Kane’s finger pulled the trigger.

Bang!

The recoil caused Karl to stagger backward, but the bullet found the man. It tore through his knee.

He collapsed to the ground, groaning in pain.

“Damnit! It has bullets in it." He cursed, sweat already forming on his forehead.

He looked up sharply. “That's dangerous, kid. Drop it." He warned, holding up his hand.

“But you guys used it on my Dad." His voice trembled with anger.

The man was about to respond when Kane covered the space between them and what came next was—

Bang!

Bang!

Bang!

Kane emptied the pistol.

The man fell backward. Flat. On his back. Blood spread immediately.

Kane looked down at him, eyes cold.

A second passed.

Then he reached the man's level, scanned around him, then spotted a necklace around his neck. It had a curved scorpion image on it.

He hesitated. Then yanked it off his neck and pocketed it.

Just then…..

Sounds of boots echoed.

Four officers stormed in, weapons raised.

One of the officers, Williams Johnson—the senior one—looked at him and could guess his age.

Thirteen.

He was birthed with blood. Holding a gun and even surrounded by corpses.

Williams hissed. “He's possessed by the devil."

Then he shouted. “The police. Drop your weapon!"

Kane turned slowly. He obeyed, dropping the pistol down, and raising his hand in surrender.

“I didn't do it." He uttered, voice vibrating. “The masked men did. They killed my mom." He pointed toward the exit door. “They followed that direction. Believe me! I'm innocent."

But Williams shook his head. "Get him!”

Two officers marched forward and grabbed Kane roughly.

Tears rolled down his cheeks as he tried to explain what had happened. However, every attempt to explain fell on deaf ears.

The officers secured Kane.

Caught a gun at his age with evidence of what he was claiming, and also believing he was a terror to society at large, they charged Kane with a crime of assassination and sent him to a juvenile detention.

But right there—-

He was breaking the arms and legs, and dislodging teeth of other kids who tried to bully him.

He was extremely violent to those who tried to mess with him.

However, seven years later….

When Kane turned twenty years old.

He was moved immediately to a prison full of monsters.

It was there he met an old Chinese man, around the age of sixty, named Bo Chen.

“You're still hungry," he said to Bo Chen. “Take mine. Eat."

From that day onward, the man began to love him. To Kane, he was just being generous, never did he know he had just unlocked a door for himself.

Days passed on, and Bo Chen began to train him right there in the prison. He taught him all kinds of stuff.

In just six months, Kane became extraordinary. Increased in might.

All the monsters in there trembled at his presence.

A year later….

Now…..

The iron door mounted at the prison entrance creaked open. An officer stood in front of it.

The younger Williams Johnson now appeared as an advanced man.

The same senior officer who had arrested him at the scene eight years back.

“Kane,” he called out with a deep voice, "it's time to leave."
