Daydreaming

Nancy felt her head spinning, the world around her turned blurry. Mocking words and whispers from the guests she had invited to show off permeated the room like poison.

“What just happened now?”

“What do you think? The people that just arrived to pick him up mentioned that she cheated on him. He must have discovered she cheated, so she wanted to kill him to hush it up.”

“It must be with Jason Marlowe. I knew that bastard was up to no good, always hanging around someone else's wife like flies to rotten eggs.”

“Damn! Women are vicious.”

“She wasn't the one who pushed him. It seemed to be that man beside her.”

“This is crazy. I can't believe she would do this after all he had done for her.” The heiress of a fashion line whispered to her friend, shaking her head.

“I knew her since college, she was from an impoverished middle class family. But after she married him, he gave her his company and turned her life for the better. Who would have expected she would treat her savior like this?”

“If I was the one who got such a man, I would hold him tightly and treat him like a king.”

A little boy that came with them tugged on the speaker’s dress, attracting her attention. “No, mommy. Ethan said he's their nanny, not his father.”

His words stunned the adults. The kids might not understand anything, but they knew exactly who the real force behind Crescent Waves was.

“Absolutely shameless!” An old man growled, hitting his stick against the ground. “She even told his son he was a nanny. Let's go, we shouldn't spend another second here. Otherwise we might get infected with their viciousness.”

“Son?” A middle aged woman dressed in heavy velvet cloth with layers of jewelry scoffed. She was the wife of Prime construction’s CEO. “Who knows if the boy is really Mr Winthrop’s son? They played him for a fool. That's what all simps deserve.”

Nancy was shaking at the top of the stairs, her face pale, unable to form coherent words as their accusations hit her like bullets. “That's not true. It's not like that. You misunderstood.”

“Shut up! All of you!” Jason roared behind her. Those already blaming him for the failed marriage sneered.

“He must actually think it's his house because he got into the pants of the mistress.”

“Only a blind fool will choose someone like Jason. I wonder what Nancy saw in him. Let's leave please.”

Most guests ran away when the soldiers came in, the more brave ones were the ones who waited to see how it would play out. It seems that after today, they would be the ones to spread the gossip around.

The rest also began to leave, grabbing their kids who had come to celebrate Ethan's birthday.

Ethan's birthday had always been a big affair in Ravencrest despite his young age. His parties were always a chance for socialization of high society members, and gaining of new contracts.

During his first birthday at one year old, the governor came to bring him a customized toy set worth millions of dollars. Some people who were invited didn't come during his first birthday because Nancy just became the VP of Crescent Waves, and they were seen as new money. However, the caliber of people that came to welcome the new born baby made them begin to pay attention.

Even more intriguing was that no one could find his roots, just Maris Pharmaceuticals which later became Crescent Waves.

At two years old, the chairman of Ravencrest chamber of commerce attended, this time more people came. Since then, it has continued like that.

It was only this year that core government officials didn't attend. They were wondering why, now it was clear to them. Nancy had shot her benefactor in the foot. Of course, his contacts weren't invited to come witness the farce.

Before anyone could say jack, the entire reception room downstairs got emptied out faster than lightning. No one wanted to be seen lingering around the society scourge. Otherwise, they might be accused of being just like them.

Nancy staggered back, collapsing into Jason. Ethan was crying beside them, terrified by the chaos and blood lining the stairs.

If Xavier was around, he would have picked him up to soothe him. But none of them were in the mood to pay him attention. One of the household staff finally stepped forward and gently pulled him away.

Nancy turned to Jason, shaking all over. “Honey, what are we going to do? Those people…”

He grabbed her arm, tightening his grasp on her. “What people? Why are you shaking because of a few empty threats? What if he dies? What can they do?”

Despite his efforts to keep her thoughts grounded, Nancy couldn't help the fear that was tearing through her cells.

The murderous eyes full of hatred and bitterness as the girl in black stared at her left dread rising in her chest. The girl seemed deadly, and the soldiers… the soldiers…

Jason turned her to face him, grabbing her shoulders, a fierce expression on his face. “You don't have to fear. Even if they have connections to the military there's always a heaven above every heaven. We can find a backing stronger than any they have known.”

Nancy’s eyes were red, and she looked at him. “What do you mean?”

“Zenith group is trying to open more branches and expand cooperation in Ravencrest. The Zenith group is under the supreme general. As long as we get their backing, no matter how well connected Xavier's people are, I don't believe they would dare touch someone under the protection of the supreme general.”

Nancy's pounding heart began to normalize and she nodded.

“That's right. Zenith group. We must quickly get the backing of Zenith group. They wanted to invest in our core technology last month, we can call them back and tell them we agree and offer more beneficial terms to them.”

If Xavier or any of his people knew what Nancy was thinking, they would have dropped dead from the ridiculousness of it all. Nancy and her man were in for a rude shock.
