Chapter 1

When life came crashing down

“Nancy, I can't endure seeing you with him anymore, you have to find a way to kick out that useless nominal husband of yours. Every time I see you with him, it's like a dagger straight to my heart. I just want to kill him.”

Xavier Winthrop froze on hearing the voice. It was Jason Blackwell, his wife's childhood friend. He had just finished preparing dinner when he heard the door open, and wheeled himself to the sitting room to take a look. But before he could open the door, the vicious words drifted to his ears.

“Jason, you have to be patient. You waited five years, a few more days is nothing. Hold on, alright?”

He opened the door slightly, enough to get a faint glimpse of the duo. His wife Nancy was currently squatting between Jason's legs, caressing his face with a doting expression in her face.

“Ethan is currently the largest shareholder of my company, Crescent Waves corporation. If I kick him out without a good back up plan, he might do something crazy to get back at me and ruin my hard work.”

“What are you scared of?” Jason pulled her up, making her sit on his thighs. “He's already a useless cripple, what could he possibly do?”

“Xavier is stubborn. Although he has given me custody of all his assets, I can't rule out the possibility that he could have powerful allies out there. Our good life has just begun, we can't mess it up.”

Jason's face twisted into a mask of hatred, and he clenched his fists tightly.

Nancy chuckled. “Don't be jealous. You know the only person I love is you. If not because I needed his kidney to save you, I wouldn't have gone close to him.”

Xavier's hand instinctively moved to his belly, touching the scar left by the surgery. His heart felt cold, his eyes burned, and deep within him, something was cracking, slowly shattering.

His hands shook, and he gripped the wheel chair, his lips trembling. Four years ago, his girlfriend suddenly fell sick after giving birth to their child. She was diagnosed with kidney failure, and he was found to be a match. Due to time constraints, he instantly agreed to offer one of his kidneys without further tests or verification.

His mother in-law wouldn't stop blaming him, saying it was because he got her pregnant, which made her already weak body deteriorate.

“It's all that incompetent doctor's fault.” Jason muttered. “If he had taken both kidneys and killed him that day, I wouldn't have had to endure these four years of grievance.”

Another memory flashed before Xavier, worsening the ache in his chest.

During the surgery, his subordinate keeping tabs on the operation had discovered that the doctor wanted to remove both kidneys and stopped him in time. He had assumed that the doctor had wanted to sell the other at the black market.

Never had he suspected that his beloved wife, whom he gave everything for, was the one who instructed both his kidneys to be taken. He had loved her to the point of madness, and thought his feelings were reciprocated. Unexpectedly…

“Look at the bright side, it was after the surgery he signed over his assets to me. If he had died that day, I wouldn't have known he had more money than what I knew, and Crescent Waves wouldn't be in existence. Every disappointment brings blessings.”

The air around Xavier suddenly felt too thin and toxic to inhale, his throat began to burn, his heart pounding in his chest. His eyes felt hot for inexplicable reasons. It felt as if an invisible hand was choking him to death, making breathing a chore.

Jason pulled her close, his lips crashing against hers. Xavier watched as she hungrily devoured Jason’s lips.

The dull ache in his chest transformed to a raging storm, and his soul left his body. Tears rolled down his cheeks. He had never cried since he was ten. Yet, here he was at twenty-eight, unable to control his eyes from humiliating him.

His hands were shaking, and he held them together on his lap, as if that would stop the agony wracking through him.

“When are you leaving him? I can't stand it anymore.” Jason pulled away from her, breathless.

“Give me a week to wrap things up.” Nancy replied, panting. “One week should be enough to transfer the assets before I bring up the divorce.”

“Since you're so scared of him, why don't we just kill him? The poison we gave him already paralyzed his legs. He will die sooner or later. We might as well spare him the pain before the final phase sets in. In that way, you won't have to worry about anything.”

Nancy looked hesitant, not saying anything.

“You, are you getting soft hearted?” Jason's expression turned to that of dark resentment and he tried to push her away.

She tightened her hold on him, not letting go. “My love, calm down. I just think that it hasn't gotten to the point of…”

The rest of her words became muffled as he resumed their kiss. Each sucking sound felt like a slap to Xavier.

The love he flaunted before the world and boasted about was nothing more than a big sham.

“Suck my cock, I want to feel your tongue on me.”

Xavier felt his blood turn to ice as he watched Nancy get down on her knees and unbuckle Jason's belt. Ever since they got married, Nancy had never for once agreed to use her mouth on him, deeming it beneath her.

He didn't want to make things difficult for her, he never insisted. Nancy had always been the one calling the shots in their marriage. At first, the sex was once a week, soon it became once a month, and throughout this year, nothing.

Her excuse was always that she was exhausted, or that Xavier needed to rest more to regain his health. Other times she wasn't in the mood or seeing her period.

It turned out that it wasn't that she didn't like sex, nor was it that she hated using her mouth on a man, she simply didn't like him enough to. He had never been worthy before her.

Unable to endure it anymore, he turned the wheelchair, leaving as silently as he came.

The moment he shut the bedroom door, it felt as if the pain got amplified, like one whose heart was being burned with a scalding iron.

He managed to get into the bed and pulled the duvet over his body. Memories of all the sacrifices he had made for Nancy and their son over the years played before him like a movie. Her bright smile that once lit up his day now felt like a mocking sneer.

Their voices wouldn't go away from his head, echoing over and over.

“She has humiliated me lots of times because of him, making me grovel even when I'm not wrong. The numerous times he set me up and acted like I was the one attacking him, she always took his side, reminding me that he once saved her life. Stupid me, how could I have missed all those signals?”

He turned and tossed in the bed. His heart felt as if a thousand tons of lead was dumped in it, making him sick to his belly.

After a while, he sat up and picked up his phone to dial a number.

“Yes boss, the transfer documents for Zenith group have been prepared. It will be ready before the young master's birthday.”

“There's no need. Destroy the documents and find ways to withdraw the assets I already transferred to her.” His cadence was hoarse, raw with pain.

“Boss, did you quarrel with madam?”

“She's no longer your madam, withdraw all the support to Crescent Waves. Also, apply for an expedited divorce. I want to be free from her within the shortest time possible.”

He cut the call without waiting for a reply, drawing in ragged breaths.

“Since you no longer want me, I, Xavier Winthrop, will not grovel for an affection that was never there. Rather than wait for you to kill me, I will leave on my own.”

Xavier closed his eyes, but his mind kept playing cruel tricks on him, replaying memories that went like a dagger straight to his heart.
