I hit the ground.

Or I would have. Nyx-0 moved fast, pressing its small body against my chest, and a strange warmth spread through the black mark on my skin. The air around us thickened and slowed. I felt something cushion the impact, not enough to stop us completely but enough to keep me alive.

I crashed through rusted metal and heard my ribs crack. My left arm, the mechanical one, twisted wrong and sparked. Pain shot through my body like fire, but it was different from normal pain, sharper and colder where the metal met the flesh.

Then everything went dark.

---

When I woke up, I was staring at a stone ceiling with cracks running through it like veins. Warm orange light flickered from somewhere nearby, and the air smelled different, like old cloth and dried herbs.

I tried to move, but my ribs screamed in protest. My left arm hung useless, the joints grinding and sparking occasionally.

"Stay still," a voice said from beside me, old and female and heavy with exhaustion.

I turned my head slowly and saw a woman sitting nearby. She was small and thin with white hair tied in a messy bun. Her face was lined with wrinkles, but her eyes were sharp and pale blue, watching me carefully.

She wore a long gray coat stained with oil and ink, and round glasses sat on her nose with one lens cracked.

"You're lucky to be alive," she said. "Three broken ribs, a fractured arm, and a concussion. Your mechanical parts took most of the impact, but your organic side is struggling."

I tried to speak, but my throat was dry and cracked. "Where..."

"A cave. Hidden and safe for now."

She pointed to the corner of the room. "Your creature is alive too. Barely."

Nyx-0 sat on a rock, still small and black and shaped like a cat. Its form flickered weakly, struggling to hold itself together.

"Hey, Boots-for-Brains," it said, its voice weak and tired. "You look worse than I feel."

I almost laughed, but my ribs stopped me.

The old woman looked at me. "You bonded with a Null-Type."

"Yes."

"Without knowing what it was."

"Yes."

She shook her head slowly. "That was stupid."

"Everyone keeps telling me that."

"Because it's true."

She stood up and walked to a table covered in strange devices that beeped and glowed. Some of them looked broken and repaired dozens of times.

"I'm Dr. REN-9," she said without turning around. "And you've made a very dangerous mistake."

I forced myself to sit up, ignoring the pain. "What do you mean?"

She turned to look at me, her pale blue eyes serious. "That thing isn't a normal Core."

I looked at Nyx-0. "What is it?"

She hesitated. "Something the District hasn't seen in a very long time. A Null-Type. They were supposed to be extinct."

"The District?"

"Your government. The ones who built you." She paused. "The ones who erased your history."

I didn't understand. Erased history? My mechanical arm whined as I shifted position.

She knelt beside me. "Your creature is dying. It used its last bit of energy to save you. If it dies, you lose whatever it's holding."

I felt cold. "The memory. Nexus."

"Gone."

I looked at Nyx-0, at its fading form. "No. That's not happening."

"You don't have a choice," Dr. REN-9 said. "Unless you find another Core. A powerful one. Feed it to your creature and it will survive."

I looked at my broken arm and aching ribs. I could barely stand. "How am I supposed to find a Core?"

A noise echoed from outside the cave, and Dr. REN-9 froze. Her sharp eyes darted to the entrance, and she grabbed a device from her table and pressed it against the wall. A faint hum filled the air.

"Cloaking field," she whispered. "It won't hold forever."

I heard heavy footsteps on stone and voices outside.

"Anomaly reported in this area. Search the caves."

"Maybe the fall killed them."

"Unlikely. The Directive wants the creature alive."

The footsteps grew closer. My vision flickered, and a faint line of text appeared across my sight.

[LEFT ARM — CRITICAL DAMAGE]

[MOTOR RESPONSE: 31%]

"Yeah," I muttered. "That's probably bad."

Nyx-0 flickered. "You can't fight."

"I know."

"Then stop pretending."

The footsteps stopped right outside the entrance. Silence. I held my breath.

Then they moved away, fading into the distance.

Dr. REN-9 exhaled slowly. "They're gone. For now."

I let out a shaky breath as my ribs ached and my arm throbbed.

"We need to move," she said. "There's a Core nearby. Ancient. Powerful. If your creature consumes it, it will survive."

I forced myself to stand, my legs shaking. My mechanical arm whined in protest, but I locked the joints with a thought.

Nyx-0 looked at me. "You're going to fall."

"Probably."

"I'll try to catch you."

Dr. REN-9 grabbed her bag. "We leave now. Stay close, stay quiet, and if we see soldiers, we run."

"Running is all I'm good at," I muttered.

She looked at me. "That's about to change."

She turned and walked toward the tunnel, and I followed with Nyx-0 clinging to my shoulder.

We hadn't gone twenty steps when my vision flickered.

[UNKNOWN CORE DETECTED.]

I stopped.

Dr. REN-9 turned. "What is it?"

I stared into the darkness ahead. Something was moving down there. Something enormous.

Nyx-0 lifted its head from my shoulder. For the first time since I'd met it, the sarcasm disappeared from its voice.

"Nova."

"Yeah?"

"Don't let that thing see us."

A deep metallic growl rolled through the tunnel.

Then two enormous eyes opened in the darkness.

[WARNING: CORE SIGNATURE — UNREGISTERED.]

[THREAT LEVEL: UNKNOWN.]

I swallowed.

"You said we needed a Core."

Nyx-0 went silent.

Then:

"I changed my mind. Run."

I read the poster twice before the words stopped sliding around.WANTED FOR TREASON AND CORE THEFT. REWARD, TEN THOUSAND CORES. ALIVE.Ten thousand Cores. One Core could feed me for a month. I had spent my whole life digging through rust for scraps worth a hundredth of that."It's the Resistance's mark," I said. My voice sounded strange in my own ears. "The circle with three lines.""It could be forged," Mira said. She was already stuffing her tablet into her coat. "The District has the mark on file. They've used it before to turn us against each other.""Could be.""But?"I looked at the note again. Bring me the creature. The boy is optional.Nyx-0 had been curled at the foot of my bedroll. It rose now, wolf-shaped, its burning-star eyes fixed on the paper. "That handwriting is not District," it said in my head. "The District writes in printed blocks. Somebody wrote this by hand.""Somebody who wants you and not me.""Somebody who knows what I am."Dr. REN-9 came through the tent fla

  • Chapter 19: Who Heard

We reached the first scavenger camp at dawn.I knew it before I saw it. The smell came first: burnt oil, boiled scrap-moss, and too many people packed into too little space. Then the walls appeared out of the orange haze, a ring of welded Beast plating with a gate made from a single enormous jawbone."Ashfall Camp," Mira said. "Four hundred people. They're on the repeater line, so they should have caught part of the broadcast.""Should have," I said."That's the best I can give you."Kira stopped at the edge of the dust and studied the gate. "I'll stay out here. If the District has eyes on this place, they'll be watching for a group. Better if I'm not part of it.""You're the one who wanted us to move fast," I said."And I still do. Go in, find out what they know, and come back before the sun clears the ridge."She said it smoothly, and it made sense. I still didn't like it.Nyx-0 pressed against my leg, small again, cat-shaped, pretending to be something a scavenger would keep for co

  • Chapter 18: The Silence After

The Spire fell quiet. Not the good kind of quiet. Not the kind where you win and everyone cheers. This was the kind where you shout into a canyon and the canyon doesn't answer.I stood at the top of the broadcast platform with smoke rising off my arm and stared at the sky.Nothing happened. No sirens. No riots. No crowds pouring into the streets."Mira," I said. "Did it work?"She didn't answer. She was bent over the control panel, her hood shoved back, her fingers flying across the keys. Her face had gone pale."Mira.""It went out," she said. "The signal left the tower. I watched it leave.""Then why is nobody screaming?"She looked up. "Because somebody caught it."I didn't like the way she said that.~ ~ ~We didn't wait around to find out who.Dr. REN-9 grabbed my sleeve and dragged me toward the elevator. The soldiers who had surrendered were already backing away, tapping their wrists, whispering into their collars. Zero-One had vanished somewhere in the chaos. That should have

Zero-One raised his hand. The soldiers moved. White armor. Unblinking eyes. They came at us like a wave, weapons raised, boots thundering against the polished floor.I didn't think. I just moved. My mechanical arm came up, and I fired. The energy pulse hit the first soldier square in the chest. He flew backward, crashing into the others behind him. But more kept coming. They were everywhere.Nyx-0 moved like shadow, faster than I'd ever seen it. Its wolf form tore through the soldiers, teeth and claws and burning-star eyes. It took down three before they could even react.Dr. REN-9 was beside me, her device raised. A burst of light shot out, blinding the soldiers closest to us. Mira was running toward the broadcast tower, her fingers already working on the control panel."Cover me!" she shouted.I turned and fired again. Another soldier went down."Zero-One!" I shouted. The man in white was still standing at the top of the stairs, watching. Calm. Unbothered. Like he knew how this woul

  • CHAPTER 17

Dawn came fast. Too fast.I hadn't slept again. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Nexus standing at the Spire, alone, waiting for Zero-One. I saw him fall. I saw them take him away.I couldn't let that happen to me.The Resistance members were already moving when I opened my eyes. Packing bags. Checking weapons. Mira stood at the entrance, watching the horizon."The tunnel entrance is half a mile from here," she said without turning. "We move now, or we don't move at all."I stood up. My ribs ached. My arm hummed. "Let's go."---We moved through the Bone Yard in silence. The sun was still low, casting long shadows across the rust. The air was cold and sharp.Mira led us to a collapsed structure half-buried in debris. She pressed a panel on the wall, and a section of the floor slid open, revealing a dark hole."The tunnel," she said. "It runs for miles beneath the surface. It'll take us close to the Spire.""How close?" I asked."Within a mile. We'll have to travel above ground for t

  • CHAPTER 15

We left the Red Bazaar and moved fast. Mira led us through narrow alleys and hidden passages, moving like someone who knew every corner of the Bone Yard. Her hood was pulled low, hiding her face. But I could see her eyes. Sharp. Watchful. "The Spire is three days from here," she said. "Maybe more. The terrain is dangerous, and the District patrols heavily." "I don't care how long it takes," I said. "You should. Every day you delay, the District gets stronger." I looked at my wrist. At the watch. "Then we move faster." Mira stopped and turned to face me. "You really are like him." "Who?" "Nexus. He used to say the same thing. Always pushing. Always moving." I felt a strange warmth in my chest. "What happened to him?" She was quiet for a moment. "He got too close. The District knew he was coming. They were waiting for him." "Where?" "At the Spire. He was trying to do the same thing you're trying to do now." I stared at her. "He tried to broadcast the truth?" "Yes. He almo
