CHAPTER 1

Aurora waits outside their apartment with a scowl etched across her face, her arms folded tightly across her chest. Despite being married for several years and sharing a child, she harbors no affection for him whatsoever.

She views him merely as a burden, so she arranged for him to drive for a rideshare company, his daily earnings funneled directly back to her.

When a rideshare vehicle rolls up to the apartment complex, Aurora’s entire demeanor shifts. Her eyes narrow as she glances at her watch, muttering irritably and snapping her fingers with impatience.

The instant Dominic spots her, dread floods through him. I’m going to pay for this. I’m running late! He accelerates forward and pulls into a spot just before the entrance.

Aurora approaches him with an icy expression.

“Why are you back so soon?” Her tone was sharp and dismissive.

“I’m terribly sorry, I thought maybe I was arriving early today, not delayed,” Dominic replies, his mind churning with sarcasm but his face carefully composed.

Her palm connects sharply with his cheek.

“You’re absolutely dense. I asked what you’re doing at home ahead of schedule, and you’re giving me a completely different answer.”

His jaw clenches, rage building inside him. But he forces it down.

“Traffic had me stuck.”

“Are you going to actually respond to what I asked?” Aurora snaps.

“I wasn’t feeling well, so I came back.”

“What a spineless coward. You’re absolutely pathetic. Coming by my office to keep tabs on me like I’m some helpless child, pretending you had some grand gesture planned,” she glares at him as though he’s merely an inanimate object with no capacity for feeling.

“What, do you take me for an idiot? Or one of those submissive mates you people lord power over?”

She spits directly into his face. He wipes the moisture away slowly, without reaction.

“I seriously considered severing our bond, but I chose differently. You’re marginally useful at least, good for maintaining the house, preparing meals, handling the rest of the household duties.”

“This is unbelievable.”

Another strike across his cheek. He refuses to let tears slip, acutely aware of his true self, the grandson of the globe’s most influential figure, his background deliberately concealed since infancy to ensure he’d experience genuine connection.

He understands he has sufficient means to live independently and will eventually assume command of the Crescent Moon Pack along with its corporate holdings. Apex Corporation will be under his authority in due course.

For now, he chooses to absorb the mistreatment from his mate, bearing it without complaint.

She’ll experience considerable shock the day she discovers exactly who she’s been treating with such contempt.

“You’re worthless. Since you prepared those dishes, you’ll scrub every one by hand,” she says dismissively.

Anger churns within him, yet he stays quiet, suppressing his fury for the sake of his child.

“Get my mother’s meal ready and bring it to her. Show some competence for once. I’ve maintained you specifically for these responsibilities, not for standing around with that pathetic expression.” She glares with visible frustration.

She snatches his car keys and drags him forcibly toward the kitchen.

Dominic lurches forward, and only his physical strength prevents him from crashing to the floor.

He proceeds into the kitchen.

Whenever Aurora finds even the slightest grievance, his meals disappear. And it’s worse than that, they don’t even maintain a spousal dynamic anymore.

Instead, her focus drifts to another man who genuinely believes he’s become her prospective partner. Eventually, Dominic thinks, he’ll show them all precisely what they deserve.

“For the last fourteen days, I’ve eaten a single meal daily, and I’ve had to purchase it from somewhere outside,” he mutters quietly as his stomach protests.

He struggles to obtain nutritious food because he’s obligated to give Aurora money, and somehow it’s perpetually insufficient.

The sole occasion he can access the kitchen is once he’s brought in the eight-hundred-dollar daily quota.

“Stop wasting time and get that food out here, you useless fool,” his mother-in-law bellows from across the room.

He’s always felt apprehensive around her, but presently he experiences no such worry. Rather, he has every reason to feel assured.

He opens the door holding the tray.

He observes Helen filing her nails while Carl occupies himself with playthings nearby. Carl claps enthusiastically.

“Dad, I’ve really been wanting to see you!” he announces cheerfully.

“I’ve been wanting to see you too, buddy.” Dominic bends forward and plants a kiss on his forehead.

“Here, let me get you something to eat.” He settles his son onto his lap, positioning the plate before him, and begins feeding him with care.

“Mom’s been telling really harsh stuff about you to Grandpa, Dad. I hate what they keep doing to you,” Carl says quietly.

“It’s going to be fine soon. Don’t concern yourself about it.”

He’s barely completed his statement when his mother-in-law bursts through the doorway. Dominic jerks back involuntarily, he genuinely wasn’t anticipating her appearance.

“What exactly are you putting into my grandson’s head? Are you attempting to poison him against his own mother?”

“No, absolutely not, I didn’t, ” There’s just a bit of custard remaining in the bowl that Carl had declined to finish.

Helen rips it from his grip and empties the remainder directly over his head, droplets splattering across the floor.

Aurora materializes suddenly from nowhere. Dominic wonders if the two of them had orchestrated this, standing just out of sight the entire time.

Aurora walks over and collects Carl, who’s now sobbing at witnessing his father’s degradation.

“Shh, don’t cry, sweetheart. It’s fine,” Aurora croons, stroking his hair gently.

“You should have brought my son over before humiliating him like that,” she says. For a moment, Dominic imagines she’s actually advocating for his welfare, wanting their boy spared from seeing his father disrespected.

But her next words strip away any such notion.

“My son shouldn’t adopt his shameful ways. He's an embarrassment to any respectable society.”
