Chapter 1 - A stranger in the mirror

Chapter 1

Adrian Wolfe jolted awake, drenched in sweat and gasping for breath. His heart pounded against his chest like a war drum, and for a moment, all he could hear was the rushing of blood in his ears. The last thing he remembered was the roar of the plane engines then screams, smoke, a blinding flash

And now, silence.

His eyes darted around the room, wide with confusion. This wasn’t the plane. It wasn’t even a hospital. No this was something else entirely. Golden sunlight spilled through velvet curtains, casting a warm glow across the marble floor. Intricate patterns were carved into the wooden walls, and chandeliers glittered above like captured stars. The bed he lay in felt like it had been made for royalty soft, enveloping, and absurdly large.

Adrian's breath caught in his throat. This place looked like it belonged in a fantasy movie or a history book.

Then he noticed something that made his body go rigid.

There was someone else in the bed.

Slowly, cautiously, he lifted the heavy quilt beside him.

A girl young, maybe sixteen lay curled beside him, her expression peaceful in sleep. Her skin glowed like porcelain under the morning light. She wore a flowing white robe embroidered with golden threads, and her dark hair fell around her like silk. Delicate jewelry sparkled on her ears and wrists, and she smelled faintly of roses and lavender.

Adrian froze, a thousand thoughts crashing into his mind all at once.

Who is she? Why is she here? Why am I here?

He blinked rapidly and looked away, mentally scolding himself. She's just a girl. A teenager. Focus, Adrian. Focus.

But nothing made sense.

The air was warm. The sheets were real. The floor, the bed, the smell of incense it was all real. Too real. Was this some strange dream? Had he died in the crash and gone to... heaven?

Before he could gather his thoughts, the girl stirred beside him. Her eyes fluttered open large, amber-brown eyes that immediately widened with relief.

“Oh, thank the stars!” she gasped, sitting up quickly. Her hand touched his forehead. “kael, you’re awake! You were burning up I thought we’d lost you!”

Adrian stared at her, stunned into silence. “Wait… what did you just call me?”

“kael,” she said, as if it were obvious. “Don’t you remember? You dove into the pond to get my handkerchief, and”

“I think you’ve got the wrong person” Adrian began, but she was already off the bed, rushing toward the door.

“I need to tell Father Thorian Belgrave! Stay here!” she called over her shoulder before disappearing into the corridor.

Adrian sat there, bewildered. His pulse raced, and he felt cold despite the warmth of the room. He needed answers.

Stumbling out of bed, he moved toward the ornate full-length mirror that stood in the corner. Each step felt foreign, like his body was resisting him. He reached the mirror

And what he saw nearly knocked the air out of his lungs.

The face staring back at him wasn’t his.

Gone was the strong-jawed, broad-shouldered man he had always been. In his place stood a pale, gaunt boy with hollow cheeks and sunken eyes. His body was thin, almost frail, like he hadn’t eaten in weeks. His chest rose and fell in shallow breaths, and his hands his once steady, calloused hands trembled.

“No… no, no, no,” Adrian whispered, stumbling back. “This isn’t me. What the hell is going on?”

He stared at the boy in the mirror, trying to find some hint of familiarity some trace of the man he once was but there was nothing.

Just a stranger in his skin.

And suddenly, the silence in the royal room felt suffocating.

Just as the silence pressed in like a weight, footsteps sounded beyond the door rushed, panicked. Then a girl’s voice, sharp with urgency, broke through the stillness: “He’s awake but something’s wrong… he doesn’t remember me!”
