Chapter One: Betrayed at the Peak

Chapter One: Betrayed at the Peak

The blade entered his body without warning.

Not from the front.

Not from an enemy.

From behind.

Lucien felt the impact before the pain—an unnatural pressure slamming into his chest, driving the air from his lungs. His vision blurred, the battlefield tilting violently as the world lost its balance. For a single, suspended moment, he could not understand what had happened.

Then he looked down.

Black steel pierced through his armor, its tip protruding from his chest, dripping crimson onto the scorched earth below. His blood steamed where it touched the ground, thick and dark with power.

Lucien’s fingers trembled.

Slowly, painfully, he turned his head.

Behind him stood General Kael.

The man Lucien had raised from a nameless soldier to the commander of the eastern legions. The man who had sworn loyalty on his knees. The man who had once said, “I would die for you, my lord.”

Their eyes met.

Kael did not look away.

“Why…?” Lucien forced the word out, his throat burning.

Kael’s grip tightened on the hilt.

“You were never meant to rule,” he said quietly.

The blade twisted.

Lucien screamed as agony tore through his body, ripping through muscle, bone, and mana channels alike. His knees gave way, crashing into the blood-soaked battlefield. Around him lay mountains of corpses—demons, corrupted beasts, and fallen soldiers.

The Abyssal War was over.

He had won.

And yet—

Heavy footsteps approached.

Lucien raised his head with effort. Standing before him were the members of the Supreme Council, cloaked in ceremonial robes untouched by battle. The very people who had crowned him Overlord when the world had been on the verge of collapse.

The High Chancellor stepped forward, his expression calm, almost regretful.

“You’ve fulfilled your purpose, Lucien Vale,” he said.

Lucien laughed weakly, blood spilling from his lips. “Purpose? I followed your commands. I burned cities you named. I killed gods you feared. I sealed the Demon Gates with my own life force.”

“Yes,” the Chancellor agreed. “And that is precisely why you can no longer be allowed to live.”

A sharp realization pierced Lucien’s pain.

Fear.

They feared him.

“You were too powerful,” another councilor said. “Too independent.”

“You stopped listening,” a third added.

Lucien’s vision darkened at the edges as fury roared through him. “You made me this way.”

“And now,” the Chancellor said softly, “we will correct our mistake.”

The air trembled.

Ancient runes ignited beneath Lucien’s feet, flaring with blinding light. Chains of radiant energy erupted from the ground, coiling around his arms, legs, and torso. He struggled, his mana surging instinctively—but something was wrong.

His power faltered.

“No…” Lucien gasped.

A sharp crack echoed through his body.

His mana core—his source of strength, the foundation of his Overlord Authority—shattered.

Pain unlike anything he had ever known tore through him. Lucien threw his head back and screamed, the sound raw and broken, carrying across the ruined battlefield.

Not just pain.

Betrayal.

Everything he had endured. Everything he had sacrificed.

For this.

“So this is justice?” he snarled, blood dripping from his chin. “History will curse you.”

The High Chancellor shook his head. “History is written by the living.”

The execution spell activated.

White light engulfed the world.

Lucien felt his consciousness tear apart.

And then—

Darkness.

Lucien gasped awake.

Air rushed violently into his lungs as he rolled onto his side, coughing and choking. His palms scraped against dirt—cool, damp dirt, alive with faint traces of mana.

He froze.

Slowly, he pushed himself upright.

The battlefield was gone.

Instead, towering black trees surrounded him, their twisted branches blotting out a crimson sky. The air smelled of ash and iron.

His heart slammed against his ribs.

“…The Ashen Expanse?” he whispered.

Impossible.

This forest had been erased centuries ago during the early stages of the Abyssal War—long before his rise, before the council, before everything.

His gaze dropped to his hands.

They were unscarred.

Young.

No burns. No ritual brands. No battle-hardened calluses.

His breathing quickened.

“No… no, this can’t be real.”

A stabbing pain lanced through his skull.

Then a voice echoed inside his mind—cold, mechanical, inhuman.

[SYSTEM INITIALIZING…]

Lucien stiffened.

A system?

That was impossible. In his previous life, he had awakened his power through blood and sacrifice—not through any divine interface.

[Temporal Reversion Confirmed.]

[Host Identity: Lucien Vale.]

[Age: 18.]

[Status: Pre-Awakening.]

His pupils shrank.

Eighteen.

This was the day.

The day his fate had first begun.

The day he had trusted the wrong people.

[Analyzing Previous Timeline…]

[Error Detected: Total Betrayal by All Factions.]

Lucien’s jaw tightened.

So it remembered.

[Condition Met.]

[Hidden Authority Unlocked.]

[Unique System Acquired: OVERLORD ASCENSION SYSTEM.]

His heartbeat thundered in his ears.

A system born from betrayal.

[Overlord Core Status: Dormant—Sealed.]

[Reason: Excessive Threat Level.]

Lucien clenched his fists, nails digging into his palms.

Sealed.

Even now, the world feared him.

“Was I brought back to suffer again?” he asked quietly.

[Negative.]

[Primary Objective Updated.]

[Rewrite Fate.]

The forest seemed to grow colder.

Fragments of the future flooded his mind—the council’s smiles, Kael’s oath, the knives hidden behind loyalty, the moment his mana core shattered.

Lucien exhaled slowly.

Then he smiled.

Not the warm smile of a hero.

But the cold, deliberate smile of a ruler who had learned the truth.

“So that’s how it is,” he murmured.

In the distance, beyond the Ashen Expanse, the capital city shimmered faintly on the horizon—the place where everything would begin again.

“They wanted a weapon,” Lucien said softly. “Then they feared the one they created.”

[Quest Activated: Rewrite Fate.]

[Reward: Overlord Authority +1.]

Lucien stepped forward.

The shadows bent away from him.

“This time,” he whispered, eyes burning with resolve, “I won’t serve.”

The rise of the Betrayed Overlord had begun.
