Chapter 102 — THE WALL FALLS
Casimir stood before the hidden armory, his expression carved from stone. The sophisticated weapons gleamed in the lamplight—far too advanced for this supposedly primitive underground city. "Who's targeting you?" Jace asked, breaking the tense silence. "Specifically." "My competitors in the election." Casimir's jaw tightened. "High-Lord Vex, obviously. He was here earlier, making threats. Then there's Council Member Thorne—she's been campaigning against my policies for months. And High-Lord Marcus, who's been unusually quiet lately. Which makes him the most dangerous." "Three targets." Jace's hand moved to one of the weapons, examining it. "We storm their residences simultaneously. Hit them hard and fast. They'll be forced to release Katseye to protect themselves." "No." Casimir's voice was firm. "That would put my daughter in immediate danger. The moment they realize we're coming, they'll use her as a shield. Or worse." "Then what do you suggest?" "We find out what they'r
Chapter 101 — THE ASSASSIN'S HUNT
The pain was beyond description. Not only where the blade had entered, even though that was agony enough, but radiating outward through my entire core. Every breath sent fresh waves of torment through my abdomen. Every movement made the wound tear wider. The assassin pulled the sword back for another strike. I threw myself sideways, my hand grabbing the nearest object I could lay my hands on which happens to be a wooden storage container. I hurled it at the assassin's head. They deflected it with casual ease, the container splintering against their blade. But it bought me a second. A single precious second. I scramble backward, my hand finding another object. This time, it is a metal basin. I threw it at them. The assassin dodges it while still advancing steadily. I kept on throwing whatever I can them including grabbing a lamp, ripping it from its mounting. The moment I threw it at them, the oil splashed across the floor, creating a slick barrier between us. CHAPTER 100 — THE INVADER'S BLADE
I stared at Casimir, my mind struggling to process what I'd just heard. "How?" The word came out barely above a whisper. "How do you have one?" "The same way you do, I imagine." Casimir dismissed his interface with a gesture. "Wherever you came from wouldn't send just anybody out into the world. They'd choose carefully. Train extensively. Equip properly." My heart hammered in my chest. "You know about the Sphere's shield?" "I do." "Since you know about my system, that means you..... ?" I paused as I gazed at him. "You participated in the trial." I breathed and watched Casimir nod. "Only the most brutal." "But if you were a champion, why are you here? I thought Champions are as valuable as resources?" "Well, only a few are." "But, you're enhanced." I reminded him, "Only those the are enhanced are mainly chosen to......." "Enough reminiscing." he interrupted me, "I have left that past life behind, I don't need someone to come here and remind me about it." "But we need as m
CHAPTER 99 — THE HIGH-ONE'S SECRET
The sound of impact echoed up the tunnel like flesh striking flesh, then a heavy thud as a body hit the ground. I froze halfway up the steep incline, my hands gripping rough stone. Below me, one of the vigilantes crumpled to the floor, unconscious. The other two were already down. A figure stood among the fallen guards, completely covered in dark fabric from head to toe. The covering obscured their features entirely, making them look like a shadow given form. The shadow turned toward me. My hand went instinctively to my venom fang knife, though I knew I was in no condition to fight. My body had nothing left to give. The figure reached up and pulled back their hood to reveal their identity. My eyes grew wider and my mouth agape. It was Katseye. "What are you doing here?" I was compelled to ask, as she got closer to me. "Do I need to answer that?" she asked, I mean she's right, she doesn't need to answer that. It was clearly obvious. She squinted her eyes for me to sa
CHAPTER 98 — SABOTAGE ATTEMPT
Riko moved like water. Unpredictable and impossibly fast. His blade came at me from three different angles in the span of a heartbeat. I blocked the first strike, barely deflected the second, and the third opened a shallow cut across my forearm. I tried to counter but my body wouldn't respond the way I needed it to. My muscles were lead. My reflexes, normally sharp, were dulled by exhaustion and blood loss. Riko pressed his advantage. He feinted left, then struck right. His blade scored across my ribs—another wound to add to the collection. I stumbled backward, raising the Reaper's Edge defensively. "You can barely stand," Riko observed, circling me. "Just give up. Make this easier on yourself." I lunged forward, putting everything I had into a wide horizontal slash. Riko ducked under it effortlessly. While I was overextended, he swept my legs out from under me. I crashed to the tunnel floor hard. The impact drove what little air I had from my lungs. Before I could recover, R
