A quiet voice echoed from a large office far away.

On the laptop screen, an old man sat silently for a few seconds before leaning back in his chair. He rubbed his forehead and let out a long sigh.

“Alright,” he said at last. “Go ahead with the plan.”

David finally relaxed.

“Sir, should we send people to protect the young master?”

The old man shook his head.

“No.”

His voice was calm but firm.

“If we interfere too much, he’ll only push us away. Thomas isn’t a child anymore. Let him handle things his own way.”

“Yes, sir.”

The call ended.

Within minutes, confidential emails were sent throughout Velox Group.

Branch presidents.

Regional directors.

Senior executives.

Everyone received the same message.

Thomas Brown, sole heir of the Brown family, has officially taken over Velox Group.

___At Lake City Hospital ___

Thomas hurried toward Emma’s ward. His clothes were still dirty from the trip. The scratches on his arms hadn’t been treated, and his legs ached from hours of climbing and riding.

But none of that mattered.

The moment he reached the room, he stopped.

Through the small glass window, he saw Ava sitting beside Emma’s bed. Scott Black was standing next to her.

The two were talking quietly.

At one point, Ava even smiled.

Thomas’s grip tightened around the door handle. Then he pushed the door open.

The sound made both of them turn.

Ava’s smile disappeared.

“Thomas.”

Her voice instantly sharpened.

“Do you know what time it is?”

She stood up.

“You’ve been gone all day. Emma is in the hospital, and you just disappear?”

Scott sat comfortably in his chair and crossed one leg over the other.

“Easy, Ava.”

He looked at Thomas and smiled.

“Thomas probably went looking for money.”

His gaze moved over Thomas’s dusty clothes and scratched arms.

“Though it doesn’t look like it went very well.”

Ava frowned when she noticed the cuts.

“What happened to you?”

Thomas didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed on Scott.

“Leave.”

The single word made the room fall silent.

Scott blinked.

Ava stared at him.

“What?”

“I said leave.”

Thomas took a few steps forward.

“You’re not needed here anymore.”

“Thomas!”

Ava’s voice rose immediately.

“Scott has been helping us this whole time!”

“Helping?”

Thomas finally looked at her.

Then he pulled a black bag from behind him and dropped it onto the floor.

Thud.

The zipper opened. Bundles of cash spilled out. The room went completely quiet.

Even Scott’s smile disappeared.

Thomas pointed at the money.

“One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”

His eyes never left Scott.

“Enough for Emma’s treatment.”

A short pause.

“And enough to pay you back for every favor you’ve done.”

Scott stared at the cash.

Ava looked between the money and Thomas, unable to speak. Thomas stepped closer.

“So tell me.”

His voice was calm.

“Are you leaving now, or do I have to escort you out myself?”

For the first time, Scott looked caught off guard.

This wasn’t supposed to happen.

He had spent the entire day waiting to see Thomas fail.

Waiting to see Ava lose faith in her husband.

Instead, Thomas came back carrying more money than anyone expected.

Scott quickly forced a smile.

“Thomas, where exactly did all this come from?”

Ava looked at him immediately.

“That’s what I want to know too.”

Thomas shrugged.

“I got lucky.”

Scott narrowed his eyes.

“Lucky?”

“I bought a scratch card.”

Thomas spoke without hesitation.

“Won the jackpot.”

He pointed at the scratches on his arms.

“Got injured rushing to claim it.”

Scott’s mouth twitched.

Ava stared at him for several seconds.

Instead of looking relieved, she looked annoyed.

“If you had this money, why didn’t you bring it sooner?”

Thomas looked at her. Ava shook her head.

“Do you know how hard today was?”

Her voice became quieter.

“Do you know how embarrassing it felt having to depend on someone else because my husband couldn’t handle it?”

Thomas didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked back at Scott.

“Stay away from my wife.”

The words came out slowly.

Every word clear.

“From today onward, keep your distance.”

For a moment, Scott felt a chill run down his spine.

He actually took half a step backward before realizing it.

Then he laughed awkwardly.

“You’re overthinking things.”

“I was only helping.”

Ava immediately frowned.

“Thomas, enough!”

She looked genuinely upset.

“Scott has done nothing but help us.”

Thomas let out a short laugh.

“Help?”

His eyes settled on Scott.

“You really think I don’t know what he’s after?”

The room became quiet again.

Ava’s cheeks reddened.

She knew exactly what Thomas meant.

That was what made it hard to respond.

Scott sensed the mood changing and quickly bent down to pick up the bag of cash.

“Well,” he said with a forced smile, “since Emma’s treatment is covered, I’ll head out.”

He looked at Ava.

“Call me if you need anything.”

Ava nodded.

“Thank you.”

Then she followed him out of the room.

The door closed behind them.

Silence returned.

Thomas walked over to Emma’s bed and sat down.

The little girl was sleeping peacefully.

The bandages on her face looked painfully large against her small frame.

Thomas gently brushed a strand of hair away from her forehead.

His movements became careful, almost afraid of waking her.

“Emma…”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“You’ve suffered enough.”

He sat there quietly for a while, watching her breathe.

Then his eyes slowly hardened.

The memory of the bullies.

The laughter.

The betrayal.

The humiliation.

Every bit of it came rushing back.

Thomas gently held Emma’s small hand.

“I promise you.”

His voice was low.

“But this time, it carried a certainty that wasn’t there before.”

“No one will bully you again.”

His grip tightened slightly.

“And everyone who hurt you…”

He looked toward the dark hospital window.

“…will pay for it.”

"Dad, you're not old at all! I'm still so young, I definitely want to grow up under your protection." She was really worried that Old Mr. Blackwood would start assigning company tasks right away. Being her age was a disadvantage, and she feared that most responsibilities would fall on her two older brothers. She didn't want to be under their care, especially not the kind of care they offered."Stop with the sweet talk and sit tight. I'm discussing something serious here." Old Mr. Blackwood's tone remained gentle, but Allison knew his temperament all too well. She quickly created some distance and sat up straight. When he spoke like this, she didn't dare to keep joking around."Recently, the headquarters has been holding a shareholders' meeting. What do you all think about it? I want to hear your thoughts, one by one."Hearing him say this brought back memories of the past. He often liked to pose questions to each of his children, encouraging them to share their opinions, and those who

Lucas stood up abruptly."So this is the attitude you bring when asking for cooperation today? If that's the case, I don't see any reason to continue this discussion."Clinton quickly followed her, forcing a smile as he walked alongside her."Auntie Clair, that's not what I meant at all. I just wanted you to know that we're in this together, and we can't afford to play both sides."He blocked Lucas's path, but instead of leaving, he shot her a cold smile. He had underestimated her. He initially thought she was just a stubborn mule, oblivious to family arrangements and overly ambitious. But now, it was clear she had some insight and was pushing him to make a choice. However, he couldn't give up on her just yet.Where did he get the idea that she was still wavering between him and her father?"I believe my cooperation with you over the past few days has shown no signs of doubt. Why do you think I would make a different choice between you and your father?"After saying this, he knew Luc

  • CHAPTER 397

"This matter doesn't require too much tension until David and I reach a specific conclusion." Sometimes, stirring the pot requires a careful approach."Should we keep everything on hold? Do we need to pay attention to the other shareholders and board members?"A shareholder meeting isn't a one-man show; it involves considering others."No need. I'm targeting what Lucas cares about, and he's the boss. It's best to take down the leader first." Thomas didn't have the energy to manage so many shareholders and board members. It would require a lot of manpower, and he clearly couldn't trust too many people."The conditions we need to discuss with David won't be simple, but as long as we have this lead, that's enough."Lawrence nodded. Thomas had already spent enough time on company matters recently. It was unclear when the shift hadhappened, but the company was gradually coming under his control."Right now, the company is in a tense situation. You might not be able to take breaks on time,

  • CHAPTER 396

"Why is that?""Because your son is pretending to cooperate with me, while the real partnership is with Lucas. You should know how our boss feels about Lucas." At this point, David felt a surge of anger rising within him. He had been wondering why that kid would resort to such a foolish method. It turned out to be a double trap, like a mantis catching a cicada while the yellow sparrow waits behind. He had underestimatedthem, not realizing they had thoroughly figured out his bottom line."So, Miss Hutton is suggesting that I handle my son myself, which would benefit the headquarters and Mr. Thomas?"The use of the word "benefit" clearly indicated his dissatisfaction."Chairman David, why don't you understand my point? Think about it, if you align yourself with the headquarters, the real estate will be securely under your name, and the company will continue to grant you some authority. There won't be any major issues."The idea of "granting authority" was entirely the secretary's own s

  • CHAPTER 395

David was sipping his tea when a phone call came in. He picked up his phone; it was an internal call."What's going on? Is there a problem?" he asked."Chairman David, there are two people here to see you, a man and a woman. They didn't give specific names but chose the nearest private room. They're probably waiting for you." David’s interest was piqued."Alright, I understand.""I said, Old Mr. Blackwood, we agreed to meet for tea. You're not going to handle business, are you?""Not at all. You all continue your conversation; I'll step out for a bit." The old foxes knew his tone meant he was off to do something, so they decided not to press him further. David stepped out and intentionallyglanced at the private room ahead. As he approached the door, he made a bit of noise. The two people who had been staring at the entrance immediately noticed andstood up. When the door opened, there stood the very people they wanted tomeet. It seemed they were lucky; they had only waited about ten

"No need for that; a silent warning will suffice. He must have realized we know about him. As long as he doesn't make any major moves, we'll just pretend we're unaware and won't bother cutting off his surveillance again." Miss Hutton really couldn't understand what Thomas was up to. Lucas had his hands ineverything, even reaching into the company's surveillance system, yet Thomas remained calm and collected, not seeming to care at all.Was he just overly confident, or was there something else going on?"We'll wrap up our overtime here. Thanks for your hard work. After this, you should meet up with Lawrence and have him accompany you for the real estate matters. Those guys aren't exactly gentlemen, so as a woman, you should be cautious." Thomas stood up, straightening his clothes and grabbing his phone. He felt a bit uncomfortable having spent so much time at the office."Got it."The two of them headed downstairsand went their separate ways. Miss Hutton reached out to Lawrence."Th
