CHAPTER 1

The fluorescent lights of Kennedy International Airport hummed, casting a sterile glow on Klaus Whitlock as he waited by the baggage carousel. His fingers curled and uncurled at his sides. The air smelled of jet fuel and cheap coffee, the sounds of hurried conversations and rolling suitcases filling the terminal.

Five years. Five long, agonizing years separated him from Allison, from his life.

He pictured her face—the way her eyes crinkled when she laughed, the warmth of her hand in his. He had played this moment in his head a thousand times. Would she be waiting for him? Would she run into his arms, tell him she never stopped believing in him? He had held onto that hope like a lifeline, the one thing that had kept him sane behind those prison walls.

A voice shattered his thoughts.

“Klaus Whitlock?”

Two uniformed officers stood before him, their expressions grim.

Before he could react, they were leading him away, through the maze of corridors. The faces of returning travelers blurred into a sea of anonymity.

The charge was narcotics smuggling. The evidence—a hidden compartment in his luggage packed with enough cocaine to put him away for decades. Klaus sat in stunned silence as the prosecution laid out its case. He was a manager at a logistics company, a man of integrity. He’d never touched drugs in his life.

Panic gripped him when he couldn’t reach his lawyer—a man his father-in-law, Reginald Thorne, had insisted on. Reginald, a pillar of society, had assured him everything would be fine.

But it wasn’t.

The judge’s gavel echoed in his ears, sealing his fate. Ten years, reduced to five for good behavior. Five years stolen from him.

He clung to the hope that Allison would be waiting.

He wrote her every week, pouring out his despair, his innocence, his unwavering love. The replies were sparse, polite but distant, always signed “Allison.” No pet names. No warmth. Just words, empty and cold.

Now, as the prison gates swung open, hope was the only thing keeping him standing.

He stepped out into the world a changed man. The naive optimism of Klaus Whitlock had been replaced by a hardened resolve. He hailed a cab and gave the driver an address.

Their address.

As the cab pulled up, he hesitated. The house looked the same—a charming brownstone in the West Village, ivy climbing the brick walls—but something was different. There was a warmth in the windows, a glow of life that hadn’t been there before.

Then he saw them.

Sitting on the porch swing, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun, was Allison. Her laughter rang out—light, effortless. Beside her, holding her hand, was Duncan.

His best friend, Duncan.

Klaus froze, his breath catching in his throat. He watched, unable to move, as Duncan pulled a small box from his pocket and slid a ring onto Allison’s finger.

The world tilted. The air thinned.

Allison was smiling.

She looked up then, and their eyes met.

Her smile faded.

Duncan followed her gaze, his body tensing.

“Klaus,” Allison whispered.

Duncan stood, his face unreadable. “Klaus… I—”

Klaus stepped forward, his voice hoarse. “Explain.”

Duncan exhaled. “Listen, man, it’s not what you think.”

Klaus let out a hollow laugh. “Not what I think? My best friend just proposed to my wife—” His voice caught. “Ex-wife?”

Allison swallowed hard, but she didn’t deny it.

Duncan shifted uncomfortably. “Klaus… you were gone a long time.”

“That wasn’t my choice.”

“I know,” Duncan said, guilt flickering across his face. “I swear, we didn’t plan this. It just… happened.”

Klaus turned to Allison, his chest tight. “And you? You couldn’t wait for me?”

Her lips parted as if she wanted to say something, but she hesitated. Finally, she met his gaze.

“I waited,” she said softly. “I waited for years.”

His stomach twisted.

“Then why?”

Her expression hardened. “Klaus… you were in prison. For drug smuggling.”

“I didn’t do it.”

She looked away. “It didn’t matter.”

“It mattered to me.”

A murmur from inside the house caught his attention. Guests. Wine glasses clinking. Soft laughter. An engagement party.

Reginald Thorne stepped onto the porch, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored suit. His eyes swept over Klaus with mild interest, as though he were an uninvited guest at his own life.

“I see you’ve returned,” Reginald said smoothly. “Klaus, I suggest you leave. This is a private moment.”

Klaus clenched his fists. "Did you set me up?"

Reginald barely blinked. “That’s a serious accusation.”

“I trusted you,” Klaus whispered. “You picked my lawyer. You swore to stand by me.”

Reginald offered a cool smile. “And yet, here we are.”

The finality of it hit him all at once. This wasn’t a misunderstanding. This wasn’t something he could fix.

Allison stood beside Duncan now. Her fingers curled around his.

Klaus took a step back. Then another.

Duncan’s expression was tight with regret. Allison’s was unreadable.

Klaus exhaled sharply, his chest aching. “Allison… did you ever believe me?”

A long silence stretched between them. Then, finally, she whispered, “I don’t know.”

That was the worst part. Not that she had moved on. Not that she had fallen in love with his best friend.

But that she had doubted him all along.

He was a failure.
