Afixed hut could survive a week.
A kingdom in the Dead Sea needed movement.
Ethan opened the Storm Anchor blueprint at dawn and combined it with the Blue Dragon Seed’s dock options. He ran the simulation three times and failed twice. The third attempt produced a new structure and one System warning about instability.
[Floating Foundation Frame: Basic.]
[Requires: 20 wood units, 8 shell plates, 3 low-grade cores, storm-treated rope, labor time: 9 hours.]
They had half the wood and no storm-treated rope.
So the day became trade, salvage, and trust management.
Lani proved useful first. She remembered where a supply raft had lodged after the storm. Mira led a two-person salvage team while Ethan stayed to manage the core and watch recruits.
The one recruit who worried him was Tomas Reed.
Tomas had arrived with Lani’s second survivor group near midnight. He was polite, quick with knots, and too interested in the core shelter. He kept talking about his sister in another zone and needing trade tokens to contact her.
That motive sounded credible. It was also exploitable.
Ethan did not accuse without proof. Kingdoms rot when rulers guess and punish.
He gave Tomas rope work near the dock, kept him away from the core, and set Lani to inventory nails. Mira noticed and said nothing until they were alone.
“You don’t trust Tomas.”
“Not yet.”
“Reason?”
“He watches exits before he watches tools.”
Mira nodded. “I’ll watch hands.”
The salvage returned a cracked raft, wet rope, and two sealed boxes. One box held spoiled grain. The other held six wood units and a low-grade crab core.
Good fortune earned by risk. Mira hobbled back with a cut on her leg and a dead Needle Gull tied to her belt.
“It tried to take my eye,” she said.
“Didn’t work.”
“Clearly.”
They rendered gull fat for waterproofing, mixed it with powdered serpent scale from a scavenged pouch, and treated rope strands. The System accepted it as storm treatment.
By midday the foundation frame began to assemble beside the expanded dock. Logs locked into a wide square. Shell plates covered the underside. The Storm Anchor hummed, keeping the pieces aligned when waves tried to shift them.
Progress drew attention.
Three more survivors requested contracts. Ethan accepted two as temporary labor after Mira questioned them. The third refused the no-theft rule and left angry.
Tomas watched that refusal closely.
Foreshadowing became action an hour later.
The core chimed a soft warning.
[Unauthorized access attempt: Storage line.]
Not the core shelter. The storage line — where the Black-Tide Elite Core remnant and two low-grade cores were sealed — had been probed.
Ethan did not run. He signaled Mira with two fingers and kept explaining plank placement to the workers.
Mira moved behind the hut.
Tomas stepped out from the storage side with empty hands and a face too calm for the situation.
“Need more rope,” he said.
“From the storage line?” Ethan asked.
Tomas blinked once. “I thought I saw loose cord.”
Ethan held up the law board token. “The core recorded an access attempt.”
The yard fell quiet.
Tomas’s mouth tightened. “I didn’t steal.”
“Not yet.”
“Then you can’t punish me.”
“Correct.”
That answer surprised him.
Ethan closed the tape he held and took one measured step forward, staying outside obvious knife range. “So we ask why.”
For a moment Tomas looked eighteen instead of sly. “Cole broker offered medicine tokens for a core shard. My sister has fever. Her zone channel says she needs medicine.”
Mira’s expression hardened. “And you decided to make our walls weaker for it.”
Tomas swallowed. “You don’t understand.”
Ethan did. That knowledge made him angrier, not softer. Victoria had built empires on people with sick relatives.
“I understand exactly,” he said. “That is why the answer matters.”
He opened the public trade board. “North Sea Kingdom offers labor credit for medicine tokens. You can pay by doing storm rope work, route warnings, or making fishhooks. No core trade.”
He flipped the screen so Tomas could read the first replies. A healer in a safer zone wanted Black Storm data; Ethan had extra leads to trade. Another respondent posted a clear offer: 5 medicine tokens for two wood units and a day’s labor.
“You could have asked,” Ethan said.
Tomas looked at his boots.
“Contract breach attempt,” Ethan continued. “Penalty: restricted access for two weeks, double watch duty, and no storage line work. If you accept, you stay and earn tokens properly. If not, you leave with personal tools before sunset.”
Mira watched Tomas’s hands. So did the rest of the group.
Tomas accepted. His shoulders stayed rigid. Shame and fear made him stiff, not grateful.
That would do. Loyalty could grow. Or not. Access controls existed for a reason.
The fair handling had an immediate effect. One temporary worker, Sera, stepped forward. “I’ll sign full recruit if rules work like that for everyone.”
“They do,” Ethan said.
She signed on the spot. Lani negotiated fishing shares and signed an hour later.
[Population: 7.]
[Cooperative construction efficiency increased.]
By dusk the Floating Foundation Frame completed.
It was ugly and low. It could only hold two huts and a storage rack for now. But it floated inside the boundary, bound to the Storm Anchor and dock frame. When waves hit, it rose instead of breaking against the tide.
[Floating Foundation Frame complete.]
[Future upgrade path unlocked: Modular Floating District.]
Mira stepped onto it first. It dipped then steadied under her weight.
“Not a city,” she said.
“A foundation,” Ethan corrected.
“For a city.”
“Yes.”
She let a short smile loosen her face. “Ambitious after breakfast.”
The medicine trade succeeded. Tomas sent medicine tokens through System mail with shaking hands. He did not thank Ethan. He returned to rope work and labored until his palms split.
Ethan accepted that as a better apology than words.
Night brought the next pressure.
The public channel flashed a new ranking sponsored by Cole Group.
[Bounty Notice: Verified coordinates of North Sea Kingdom approach route. Reward: premium shelter contract, 10 low-grade cores.]
Then Julian posted under his own name.
“To the false king hiding in the Dead Sea: I am coming to inspect your stolen advantage.”
Ethan read it and closed the screen once.
Mira stood with him on the floating foundation, watching the anchor lights reflect off the water.
“Let him come?” she asked.
Ethan looked at the anchor, the fence, the recruits, and the first piece of a future city.
“No,” he said. “Let him arrive.”

Chapter 10: War Banner on Black Water
Julian Cole arrived with twelve boats, two contract breakers, and a banner too large for the Dead Sea wind.He came at noon, when public channels were busiest. That was Richard’s hand. Witnesses could become weapons if controlled early. The North Sea Kingdom had seven people, one floating foundation, a damaged fence, and three working traps.Ethan had also prepared the battlefield. He moved the visible route markers the night before. The safe approach still existed, but the obvious path now crossed a shallow reef lined with shell spikes and storm-rope snares.Mira watched from the dock. “He brought more than hunters.”“He brought an audience.”Julian’s lead boat stopped outside beginner-protection range. He wore polished armor that had never met a crab claw. His hair was perfect despite the salt wind.A public broadcast shell floated over his shoulder.“Dead Sea occupants,” Julian announced. “I am Julian Cole of the Cole Group. Chapter 8: The North Sea Kingdom
Ethan read the public anger and the private threat, then turned both into fuel. The Black-Tide Serpent mission still pulsed over the core. If they failed, an elite monster would nest beside them. If they won, they gained the anchor blueprint needed to survive larger attacks.Mira tightened her shoulder wrap. “Plan?”“Make it fight the storm, not us.”They used every recovered resource. The broken Rain Catcher frame became a lure mast. The hunter pole became a harpoon shaft. Three crab cores charged fence spikes around the north shallows.Ethan used the Storm Core from the hatchling to form a temporary Storm Eye Marker, a weak Blue Dragon option that predicted one safe gap in the wind.[Storm Eye Marker duration: 22 minutes.]The serpent arrived at the edge of the storm eye.It was longer than their hut, black-scaled, with blue lightning crawling under its skin. Chapter 7: Hunters at the Fence
Ethan did not chase the Black-Tide Serpent at once.Only fools ran into elite monsters while wounded and half-flooded. First came repairs, then traps, then timing. But another enemy arrived before the storm eye.The Tide Fence chimed in a pattern Ethan had set for human movement.Mira crouched by the door, shoulder bound tight. “Cole?”“Likely.”Three rafts emerged through the rainbreak. Six survivors rode them. They stayed just outside the territory boundary, which meant someone had explained beginner protection.Their leader wore a clean blue coat with the Cole crest stitched over the heart. Not family. A paid contract hunter. He raised a speaking shell. “Dead Sea survivor. Cole Group offers rescue and patronage. Lower your fence and submit core inspection.”Mira muttered, “That sounds friendly if words mean nothing.”The hunter smiled. “Beginner protection prevents us from attacking your territory directly. It does not prevent salvage, monster driving, or lawful trade enforcement.”
Chapter 6: Black Storm Warning
The sky turned green before noon.Ethan stopped repairing the south fence and looked east. A wall of cloud crawled across the Dead Sea, low and heavy, swallowing the horizon.Mira followed his gaze. “Normal?”“No. Black storm.”She did not ask why he knew. That trust saved time.A black storm was not just weather. It carried monster eggs, corrosive rain, and pressure waves that could flip light huts. In the first life, Ethan had lost his roof and two fingers to one on day four. This one was early.Changing events had begun to bend the timeline.Ethan opened the core menu. They had two low-grade crab cores, one eel sliver, four planks, copper wire, canvas, and not enough time.“Priorities,” he said. “Core stays dry. Fence takes the first surge. Dock gets cut loose if it starts pulling the territory apart.”Mira nodded. “Food?”“Inside. Water sealed. No fire after the wind turns.”They worked hard and spoke little.Ethan spent one crab core on Storm Lashings, a Blue Dragon Seed option t
Chapter 5: Public Water, Private Knives
On the second morning, the public channel discovered Ethan. It began with rankings.[Regional Notice: First Dead Sea territory to stabilize a damaged core.][Name hidden by ancient concealment.][Reward: 1 low-grade repair voucher.]The zone channel erupted at once.“Dead Sea has survivors?”“Stabilized already? Impossible.”“Cole Group offers protection contracts for useful information.”Cole influence had entered the sea world faster than he remembered. Richard always moved early when rankings appeared. In the first timeline, Ethan had been too poor to notice.Mira leaned over his shoulder. “Cole Group. Related to you?”“Worse than monsters, because monsters admit what they want.”A small raft drifted outside the boundary. Two boys and one girl stood on it. All eighteen. All wet, hungry, and armed with sharpened poles.Their leader raised both hands. “We don’t want trouble. We want water. Trade.”Mira whispered, “The rear one is hiding a hook rope.”Ethan saw it.
