Chapter 1
Chapter 01
Adrian Kane stood before three graves. His father, his mother's, and his sister's.
Ten years had passed, but the ache in his heart caused by their demise had not dulled. If anything, it sharpened, cutting through his every breath.
He could still hear their voices, still see the fire devouring everything they had built that night. And he would have ended up like them too now, a slab of rock and degenerating heart..
A stranger passing by saved his life that night.
Adrain breathed slowly, his jaw tightening despite his failed attempt to school his rage. His clenched hands trembled by his side.
“The Jade family. The Bert clan. The Plit clan. You thought my family's blood would vanish here.” They were responsible for the propaganda to end his family while they enjoyed the wealth that they had worked for, walking through the streets scout free.
His fists clenched until his knuckles whitened, enough to draw out blood. “I’ll drag every one of you down. That’s my vow.”
The words hung in the cold air, a promise carved as deep as the stone in front of him.
---------
At the graveyard gates, convoys stretched in formation. Soldiers stood at rigid attention, boots clicking in perfect unison. At their center, Commander Rylan waited, together with Adrain's trusted assistant.
The most feared military man in Hillcrest, chief Commander of the Crest army, his name is enough to silence entire rooms of politicians and instill fear into the heart of erring children.
But today, even he lowered his head deeply with respect.
He strode forward like a little child and quickly bowed with a worshipping bow.
He quivers, counting his words dreadfully. Adrain was the Shadow Monarch, and getting him angry was enough to plug Hillcrest off from the map. “Shadow Monarch, Supreme Commander of the Eastern Front Hillcrest; welcome you home!”
The rows of soldiers echoed as one:
“Welcome, Monarch!”
Ten years ago, Adrian had been nothing more than a survivor from the fire incident. With no family and brewing enemies, enrolling in the military was his last resort.
The wars and the discipline forged him. And through sheer dedication, he rose through ranks, feared and worshipped. Entire armies had fallen at his word. Enemies who terrified nations broke under his command. He had returned not as an orphan, but as the Shadow Monarch. A title only one other person in history had earned, over a thousand years ago.
The commander quickly opened the Bentley door for Adrain to step into the car, while his assistant drove with multiple bows.
Inside the car, the atmosphere was heavy. His men shifted uneasily at the weight of his suppressing presence.
"Any Intel about her?" Adrain finally said.
“Shadow Monarch, we’ve confirmed the reports. The girl who saved you that night… She's alive. And her name is Elara!"
Adrian’s gaze instantly spiked and his attention piqued.
“She suffered severe burns. Her face, her body… and she hasn’t walked since. The Halt family took her in a few months ago, but…” The man’s jaw tightened. “They treat her as a disgrace. Worse than a servant. They’ve been using her to entertain their guests.”
Adrain's being trembled with rage. Sweat dripped from his assistant's head like beads. He had never seen the Shadow Monarch so agitated before.
"And the JBP family?" Adrain inquired of his parents' murderers further.
"They are currently spreading their influence through every thick and thin of the city, from drugs to industry." Adrain's jaw clenched further.
After a long pause, his assistant dared to say. "My Leige, this; this is beneath you, just say the words and we will!"
"No!" Adrain cuts through his words before he is done. "This's a personal matter and I will not entertain her form of interference!" His voice remained calm but carried an explosive energy.
"I will do this alone. And watch those murderers crumble with sweet satisfaction."
"Yes my liege!" The soldier bowed.
Meanwhile, the Hart Family estate blazed with light that night. Guests filled the grand hall, silk gowns and tailored suits brushing against marble floors. Laughter rang loud, fueled by fine wine and arrogance. The city’s elite gathered here, flaunting wealth and power at Mr. Han's birthday celebration.
On the stage, the spotlight shined on a lady, the object of the vicious jest coming from the rich audiences.
Elara.
Once, she had been Hillcrest’s pride. The girl whose beauty drew envy and admiration alike until the incident that scared her face. And now, she's veiled and broken, the hideousness of her looks an entertainment for the wealthy.
Bundles of money were hurled at her feet as the crowd mocked.
“Lift your veil!” someone shouted, half-drunk.
“Show us what you’ve been hiding!” another mocked. “Didn’t we pay for it?”
Elara trembled. Her fingers clutched the thin fabric covering her scars. Every laugh, every cruel word pressed heavier against her chest and emotions twisted into tears twisted into her eyes.
"Pathetic!" A chubby youth from the VIP section spat angrily, stomping onto the stage. He grabbed her by the hair, yanking her backwards with disdain.
"B**tard! You're here to entertain us and not hide!" He ripped her vile while she tried to struggle but his iron grip was too strong against her feminine hands.
The crowd broke into applause.
Then... Snap.
Adrain who had being watched from the rare appeared.
A force tore right through his wrist and bent it in the wrong way that instantly silenced the crowd.
The chubby youth shirked, the initial pain boiling through his body as he glared hard at Adrian through the subsiding pain.
"Who dares.."
Adrain face was stale, pressing deep into Han's gaze like a stab
"I do and here's a tip for free!"
Adrain squeezed deeper, the pain tearing through every corner of the youth's body as he groveled with pain. The crowd gasped in shock.
"If you are going to call someone, 'monster!' you should not act like one first."
The crowd remained frozen in awe and disbelief. No one dared to move. Nobody spoke.
For the first time in ten years, someone dared to go against the heir of one of the most powerful families in the city.

RETURN OF THE VENGEFUL GOD OF WAR Chapter 155
CHAPTER HUNDRED AND FIFTY-FIVE Intentionally, the Shadow Monarch ignored the Commander, but it didn’t look like that was going to reduce the tension hovering in the air.“My Liege?” Rylan called out, his voice shaky and low. He waited for Adrian to turn to look at him, eager to call out to him again just in case he was not going to give him a response. The Shadow Monarch turned to look at him, staring deep into his eyes. He could see that he was not just scared but uncertain of the outcome of their adventure. He took a deep breath, then he inched closer to him before whispering only to his hearing.“Nothing is going to happen to your sister, Commander. You have my word…” That was all he needed to say for Rylan to nod in response, taking a deep breath.“I trust you…” The Commander stated, and even though his voice was a bit shaky, the fact that he was very certain of the words Adrian said to him was vividly written all over his face. Turning to look at Marcus, the Commander grunt

RETURN OF THE VENGEFUL GOD OF WAR Chapter 154
CHAPTER HUNDRED AND FIFTY-FOUR “Who is that?” Rylan asked with a whisper, unable to get rid of the feeling that cringed him as soon as he saw the masked fellow being dragged forward by the enemy soldiers. There was no response, and even though he was not the only one interested to knowing who that was, every other person chose silence, staring with wide eyes. They watched as the person was dragged, all the efforts made to break free was futile. The silent grunt and muffled screaming made it impossible to try to discover who it was, but it didn’t look like that was going to remain a secret for a long time.Marcus pointed to a spot, and without delay, his soldiers dragged the fellow to his front and forced him to kneel before him. The General nodded in satisfaction, and then he lifted his face to look at Adrian, holding onto his sinister smile. “What is this?” Adrian asked impatiently, his expression dark and annoyed. But it took a while before Marcus could give him a response, and

RETURN OF THE VENGEFUL GOD OF WAR Chapter 153
CHAPTER HUNDRED AND FIFTY-THREE “With what?” Adrian retorted after a while, but he didn’t bother to look at him, concentrating on the road with the fortress visibly ahead of them. The Commander took a deep breath, and after a few seconds, he cleared his throat, reaching for his mind to get a suitable response. “With this situation, My liege…” He broke his silence, forced to clear his throat when he realized that his voice was cracked. “I know that Gusto hates me because he thinks I killed Amira, but I do not want to fight with him. I love Samara, and I want to get married to her as soon as all of this is over. She has agreed, but she is worried that her brother might not approve…” He paused just to be certain that Adrian was paying attention, and that his plain countenance was not a sign of disinterest to what he was saying. “Do this for me and I will be very grateful, my liege…” He bowed, showing utmost reverence and plea. “Maybe I will consider retiring and finally have a fam

RETURN OF THE VENGEFUL GOD OF WAR Chapter 152
CHAPTER HUNDRED AND FIFTY-TWO Rylan left with him while Gusto and his sister left for their car.The ride to the fortress seemed longer than it usually was, silence and tension rising in the air. Severally, the Commander had turned to look at the Shadow Monarch, and even though he said nothing, his silence echoed with some of the feelings from the thoughts that roamed inside his mind.He looked like he was about to speak a lot of times, but before Adrian could turn to look at him, he moved his eyes away, turning to look at the road ahead of them.At some point, he was staring at the car behind them, but it was hard to tell if he was staring at Gusto or Samara. “Commander?” Adrian called out to him after he had waited for him to speak, and then he stayed silent for a while, waiting for him to face him. “Out with it already…” Adrian arched his brows and only looked away from the Commander each time he wanted to look at the road.Rylan took a deep breath, and when that didn’t seem li

RETURN OF THE VENGEFUL GOD OF WAR Chapter 151
CHAPTER HUNDRED AND FIFTY-ONE Gusto looked at his sister for a while, and then he sighed, nodding slowly. “Fine…” He decided to let go, but that was for that moment.Turning to face the Commander again, he snorted, glaring him directly in the eyes.“We are going to continue this fight when Marcus is dead. Enjoy your life while you can…” That was a very serious threat that Rylan was not going to let slide easily, but the only reason why he didn’t say anything was that the Shadow Monarch was standing right there. He took a deep breath, turning to Adrian with a deadpan expression that appeared after he had sighed heavily. “I am sorry, my liege…” He apologized, bowing slowly. Adrian nodded, and after taking a deep breath, he turned to face Gusto, piercing into his eyes. “We are running late, guys. We don’t want Marcus taking us for granted…” His words was meant to be a reminder of what was at stake, but Gusto didn’t look like he was ready to make any move, holding onto the sinister

RETURN OF THE VENGEFUL GOD OF WAR Chapter 150
“Dara?” Elara called out silently as soon as she saw her, waiting for her to get closer. Dara looked forlorn, strongly disturbed by the thoughts and feelings that gripped her. But she remained silent, and that was an indication that she had something she wanted to say, but didn’t know how to say it.When Elara realized she had her eyes on Adrian, then on the siblings, she sighed heavily, turning to the Shadow Monarch with a very inquisitive look on her face. “Who are these people?” She asked, very curious as she pointed at Gusto and his sister. She was wary of them, staring silently and ready to take caution. “They are my friends, Elara…” Adrian gave a very quick response, but because Elara was unsatisfied by what she heard from him, she refused to stop staring at them.“Elara?” Dara’s voice rang from nearby, causing her to stop staring as she turned to give her a curious stare. “I need to talk to Adrian. Please…” Dara stated with a tone that indicated that she was trying to tak
