Chapter 1
Blood On the platform
Pete’s face hit the platform and blood dripped from his nose. His cheek was red from the countless punches he received from his opponent, leaving him weak on the floor.
His opponent's knuckles gave a faint spark radiating heat waves as he approached, the half unconscious boy, bleeding on the floor. Mutant High Academy’s sparring arena, had been filled up with students who both came to spectate and fight. It was a tradition that for a student to rise to the top and claim the yearly student free loan, he or she must fight his way up in order to claim it. And that was what Pete was doing. Fighting with his life even though he knew he was nothing but a powerless level one weakling with nothing to offer. His parents sacrificed everything they had just to send him to this school and the student free loan was the only means of furthering his education. The roar of the crowd drowned out Pete’s ragged breaths. At sixteen, he was the only powerless kid in a school of freaks who wielded abilities. “You don't belong here” Jax sneered, circling Pete like a wolf. He had always hated Pete's courage because for generations no powerless mutant had made it to the academy before. Weaklings are only meant to serve them as servants, not to compete with them for power, which they don't have. “Don’t tell me what to do.” Pete muttered, he wiped the blood off his lips and used his shaky arms to help himself up. Mutants suppressed regular humans in every aspect, so serums were created to transform regular humans to mutants with abilities. But the few who didn't consume serums to gain abilities were known as the originals, the ones directly affected by the war with the Dashkyr. The mutants classified themselves into different stages and Pete was at the first stage not possessing any superhuman abilities, only enhanced senses and Majority of the students in the academy were second stage mutants like his opponent Jax. While very few who came from rich backgrounds with lots of resources had reached the peak of the second stage. The stages were sub classified into three steps, low, mid and peak stage. The difference between each stage was like a drop of water and an ocean. So if mutants of different stages fought the battle could already be decided. The crowd's roar drowned Pete ragged breath as he staggered, he knew he couldn't beat Jax. He was only trying to get that loan, but seeing the hatred in Jax eyes, he couldn't wait but to think of a way to save himself without being disqualified. As he stood at the edge of the platform, still lost in thought, a sharp pain slicing his cheek, brought him back to reality. He turned, only to see a girl with pink hair, in a group of girls licking her finger nail that was stained with blood while looking at him with a mocking smile. “Fight fucker!” One of the girls yelled as if she was already bored to death, causing the others to burst in laughter. Pete turned to the Instructors platform the next second, seeking Justice, hoping that the refree would end the fight, it was clear that he had worn out his strength, but their cold gazes said otherwise. His eyes locked onto a general, Kade he had heard the stories, How he alone cleared a Dashkyr base sparing none. The Fierce creatures that smashed armor tanks and trucks were pests before him. Pete hoped maybe he would intervene But the look on his eyes said otherwise. He only valued the strong and to him Pete was dust in the way. Jax launched at Pete who was barely standing, the sparks on his fists grew larger, he wanted to finish Pete off. “Why do they want him dead?” a girl spectating in the crowd sighed “Because he is weak” her friends laughed. In the last second a flaming blade cut through the stage causing Jax to retreat. A youth wielding two flaming curved blades, rushed through the crowd in a blur leaving fire trails, he leaped onto the platform swinging his blades, two fire arcs aimed at Jax. The blades closed in quickly, Jax managed to sway his head to the side but his upper shoulder was slashed off. His loud cry echoed through the silent arena, with his eyes shut he braced himself for the second blade but it never came. The referee had intercepted it. “Dave?” Pete whispered, they were childhood friends who grew up together as neighbors in Manchik City Before they were forced to come to this Academy in an unknown island, by an attack in their city. Dave's long black hair reached his chin, with a silver band round his forehead, the thin scar across his eye along with his wide jaw and armor chest piece made him look like a knight. Whereas Pete was the exact opposite, a skinny boy whose clothes barely fitted him with a round baby face. Pete was the only Family Dave had although not related by blood, but a shared childhood experience, so going to such an extent to protect him was understandable. “Jax wins!” The referee said, “And you Morrow, If you can't fight you won't survive here, the labs await you. He turned to Dave. “Rebel, Interrupting this fight has crossed the line You would be sent to Sahel for correction. The crowd gasped in unity at the mention of the Sahel grounds, Gossips started and rumors spread in the arena. Dave's look of determination was replaced with shock, Sadness and fear. He had heard the rumors long ago. The referee stepped off the stage with a carefree look like he hadn't sentenced the duo to hellholes following the general's order. The academy was run by a major General And after him was Kade then the other generals followed in the rankings and lastly sergeants, who guided the students activities in the base. On several different Islands there were other bases like this one, totaling to five Academys, With one man overseeing them all, the Supreme Commander. He stayed at first base while the base Pete stayed at was the fifth, the least ranked of all five. The next set of students were called up to battle according to their tally numbers. The atmosphere was still tense, and the chatting continued. “I heard the Sahel grounds don't just break you physically, It strips your mind.” “The underground labs aren't any better, No one has ever come back the same way that went in.” “Those guys, it's over for them.” Students formed small groups Discussing about the Duo Some Pitted them as they walked through the arena with their faith sealed. “You didn't have to interfere, I had…” “cut the crap bro, I'm not ready to lose you.” Dave interrupted. His giant figure shadowed Pete, who trailed behind him watching the khopesh blades hang in an X on Dave's back. He was the only reason Pete hadn't been attacked regularly by bullies, he was at the mid second stage of mutation surpassing the majority of the students and this made most bullies reconsider before approaching him. Nothing spectacular took place in the remaining fights but one thing was sure Pete would be ranking at the bottom. When the event came to an end, the duo sat with their arms crossed staring blankly into space in the almost empty Arena. When a gentle voice caught them by surprise. “Sorry I didn't mean to scare you,” the girl smiled, she was about Petes age but her looks said otherwise, she was well endowed with curves and beauty but not height. “I thought I should apologize on behalf of my friends.” Pete raised a brow, he was confused. She placed her hand on her cheek, the same spot Pete was grazed, then pointed at him. “I'm sorry.” she whispered and with that she left. “What was that about?” Dave asked. “I think she's one of the girls who threw the can at me back there.” “Hmm, trying to redeem herself.” Dave smiled, he glanced at his watch and suggested they get going before curfew met them. He dragged himself up lazily, his legs wobbled slightly as he approached the exit. Pete couldn't help but feel guilty as he glanced at him. “I'm sorry I dragged you into this bro” Pete said, placing a hand on Dave's shoulder. “It's nothing that's what brothers do” Dave laughed, hoping to ease the tension, but he worried the most. “So there's no information on how to get to the places we're supposed to be.” Pete smiled, scratching his head. “Nahh I can't imagine us walking into our own deaths” Dave teased as both of them laughed approaching the housing area. Dave and Pete shared their room with a casual student, aside from greetings and issues concerning their apartment, they barely spoke, but it was different tonight. “So you managed to get yourself a ticket to hell after all the trouble you've caused” Ryan said to Dave who entered the room with Pete. The room wasn't large, but it had enough space to contain three beds, a wardrobe, a fridge and a bathroom on the inside. “Better than crying over a girl who played you,” Pete retorted, crashing on his bed. “Fuck off weakling, At least I wasn’t born useless,” Ryan responded, controlling himself from driving his fists on Pete's face. Dave couldn't help laughing at the two. He grabbed cola from the fridge and tossed it to his roommates. He knew that this might be his last normal night for both himself and Pete. In the late hours of the night two figures, masked all over, one in green and the other in white approached Pete's apartment, the one in white released a gas inside the apartment through the hole under the door while the one in green focused on disabling the lock.Expand

Reanimated as Death's Bane A secret organization
Inside the portal, it felt like time slowed down. When Pete tried moving, he was locked in place, he felt like he was in thick gel. The Dashkyr's eyes widened beside him, it was confused too, discovering its movements were restricted. Then a voice spoke, it didn't come from a particular direction, it was everywhere, like wind through caves."You seek escape from chains unseen. Answer true, and freedom is yours. Fail, and fall to endless night. Two trials for two souls."They both had questions, but couldn't move their lips to make a sound, everything seemed too slow, except for the voice. Then it spoke again, with a riddle that would decide their fate "I create paths where none exist, with folds and creases, I persist. In the hands of the lost, I light the way, a silent guide through night and day. What am I?"Pete wondered how he was going to answer such a question without talking. He had gotten used to the movement situation aroun

Reanimated as Death's Bane A portal
Pete's fist hung in the air, inches from the Dashkyr's shifting face. Rage burned in his chest like fire, his new muscles tensed and was ready to strike. The alien's green eyes glowed faintly in the dim tunnel light, its skin rippling like water as it struggled to hold its human shape. Behind them, the stomping footsteps of the assassins echoed louder, closing in fast. "You tricked me!" Pete yelled, shoving the creature harder against the rough walls. "You're one of those things that ruined everything I had, my home, my family!"The Dashkyr gasped, its voice a weird mix of Tee's tone and something alien, like a groan wrapped in words. "Wait... listen! If you kill me now, we're both done.”“Those trackers will get us. They'll drag you back to the labs, turn you into something worse than me. Or worse, kill you slowly."Pete's breath came in heavy bursts. He could feel the power in his hands, the strength from whatever those chemicals

Reanimated as Death's Bane Gangs
After an hour, another horn sounded, Dave followed the crowd to the mess hall, same as last. He didn't bother with the line, he hadn't gotten a ticket, he slipped away, back to the spot where he had hidden the remains of what he killed. He buried them under loose dirt and wrapped it with a cloth, after digging it up, he started a small fire and roasted another chunk. The meat was tougher now, almost stale, but he forced it down, satisfying his hunger. He had to fight tonight and make a name to end this. With his belly full, Dave strolled the Grounds, with his blades tucked close, he wanted to find higher grounds to unwind and chill. He felt battle intent as he passed he passed the arena still heading towards the hill in the distance, as his eyes scanned the environment. Then he heard something, a cry, followed by a wet thud. He slowed down trying to get the direction it was coming from, then he followed it to a collapsed buildi

Reanimated as Death's Bane Being watched
Under the morning sky, the red clouds casted a glow over the horizon, beings rose lazily to the quiet morning, some earlier than others and among them was Dave.Despite his body still aching from the night before, he was swinging his blades, training to get better at using his weapon. He didn't sleep much, he couldn't, not here. Where his life was constantly at stake. He had to get stronger to survive and that's what he aimed towards. After he was done with his routine, he went in directions the others followed earlier, trying to navigate his way around this environment. After a while, a low, grinding horn shook the stillness of the air, it was different from the food call. Inmates stirred, crawling out of their tents or off the cracked ground, their weird shapes stretching in the dim light. Dave sat up, and watched. The yard was alive now, with chaotic movements from abnormal looking creatures, like something out of a wasteland nightmare. The brick house at the center stood like a

Reanimated as Death's Bane The price of anger
The Inmates moved out of their tents and resting spots towards a long, low building a distance from the housing area. He joined the crowd, following at the edges behind. The building had cracks and holes in almost every spot, with its roof barely holding on. Inside, inmates lined up at a counter where guards handed out trays.“I guess it's food time.” His stomach rumbled, but he had no idea how it worked here. After taking their trays the Inmates moved to a more decent looking building, opposite them. The building had no doors, only a large window with a little slot at the bottom for trays to slide through. He watched as the others slid their trays in, and what they got varied. Some got slabs of steaming meat, others got slimy glowing worms. Starving was bad, but eating that? Might be worse. He kept his expression plain but his heart was thumping hard, hoping he wouldn't get worms. When he reached the counter, he pushed his tray through the slot. A woman’s face appeared behind the gl

Reanimated as Death's Bane Into the Sahel grounds
The Gates screeched closed as Dave and the other inmates entered the grounds. The environment was completely different from what he saw outside. The air was hotter, dustier, and drier. The red sky seemed lower, making the world feel smaller and meaner, sealing him in with the other teammates, eight of them now, after the two who tried to run were reduced to a splatter in the desert.A faceless guard escorted them forward, and anytime anyone moved out of line, he smacked them with the barrel of the rifle. Dave stumbled forward, even when his legs were sore, he didn't want to be hit by that thing, but he missed a step while he was looking at an area that had bleachers on each side forming on the distance and figures were seated chanting and roaring, he couldn't help but wonder what exactly was going on and why they headed in that direction.“Move it.” The guard said moving his rifle to hit Dave, but before it could connect, Dave sprang to his feet, rejoining the line. The guard led them
