Chapter 1
Midnight Lottery
The sirens didn’t sound like the usual city drills. They were discordant, screeching, and layered with a low-frequency hum that seemed to rattle the very marrow in Thiago Valério’s bones. Thiago sat up in bed, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The room was dark, illuminated only by the frantic, strobe-like flickering of the city lights outside his window. "What the hell is that?" Thiago muttered, shoving the covers off his legs. "Is that a drill? At midnight?" He stumbled toward the window, his bare feet cold against the hardwood floor. Outside, the skyline of the city—usually a tapestry of calm, amber-hued apartment blocks—was chaos. People were spilling out onto the fire escapes, their voices rising in a confused, cacophonous swell. His neighbor, Mr. Henderson, was already out on his balcony. He looked just as confused as Thiago, clutching a half-empty mug of coffee in his trembling hands. "Hey! Henderson!" Thiago shouted, sliding his balcony door open. The air was thick, tasting faintly of ozone and scorched copper. "You hear that? You have any idea what’s going on?" Henderson didn’t turn around. He was staring straight ahead, his eyes wide, fixed on something in the distance that Thiago couldn't see. "I don't know, kid," Henderson said, his voice cracking. "My radio is just static. Everything is just static. Look at the sky, Thiago. Tell me you see that color." Thiago squinted. He didn't see the sky. Instead, he saw Henderson. Or rather, he saw a flickering, translucent golden mist clinging to the man’s shoulders, like the embers of a dying fire dancing in a light breeze. "Whoa," Thiago breathed, rubbing his eyes. "What the… Henderson, are you okay? You’re glowing." "Glowing? What are you babbling about?" Henderson snapped, finally turning around. The golden mist flared brighter, pulsing in sync with the distant, blaring sirens. "I'm serious, man," Thiago insisted, taking a half-step back. "There’s this light. This gold… aura thing around you. It’s right there on your shoulders. Are you hurt? Are you playing some kind of prank?" "Prank? You think this is a joke?" Henderson stepped closer to the railing, his face pale. "I’m looking at the apartment across the street, Thiago. It’s bending. Look at the foundation! It’s like the steel is made of wet paper." Thiago looked. His eyes adjusted, and the golden aura around Henderson intensified, turning into a geometric display of light that blurred into text before his eyes. [ TARGET: Arthur Henderson ] [ LUCK RATING: A- (SURVIVAL PROBABILITY: HIGH) ] [ CURRENT STATUS: PROTECTED BY FATE ] Thiago stumbled back, hitting his glass door with a dull thud. "What is that? Am I hallucinating? Henderson, please tell me you see that text." "What text? Thiago, you’re acting like you’ve lost your mind," Henderson said, looking genuinely terrified now. "Focus! The building! It’s starting to go!" A groan of tortured metal tore through the night, a sound so loud it drowned out the screaming sirens. The apartment complex across the alleyway was buckling. It wasn't falling down; it was collapsing inward, the floors pancaking with surgical, terrifying precision. "We need to move!" Thiago yelled, his instincts finally kicking into overdrive. "Henderson, get inside! Now!" "It’s not going to hit us, right? It’s too far," Henderson shouted back, but his voice was shaking. "It’s too far, right, kid?" "Don't bet on it!" Thiago reached out, grabbing the railing of his balcony. The golden light around Henderson grew blindingly bright, casting sharp shadows across their small patio. Suddenly, a massive support beam from the collapsing structure snapped, whipping through the air like a discarded toy. It smashed directly into the corner of Henderson’s apartment, shattering the concrete like glass. "Henderson!" Thiago screamed, lunging for his neighbor. He didn't make it. The floor beneath them groaned. Thiago didn't wait; he bolted toward the stairwell, his heart screaming at him to run. He looked back one last time. Henderson was standing amidst the debris, a massive chunk of reinforced concrete hovering inches above his head, suspended by some unseen force. The golden glow was practically a shield, pushing the rubble away. "Get to the basement!" Thiago shouted, his voice hoarse. "Henderson, the basement! Now!" "I'm right behind you!" Henderson scrambled over the wreckage, his hands bloody, but he was moving with an impossible grace. They sprinted down the narrow, dimly lit hallway. The building felt like it was exhaling, the walls tilting at an angle that made Thiago’s equilibrium fail. He grabbed the handrail, dragging himself toward the heavy steel door that led to the reinforced utility room—the building’s only designated shelter. "Move it, move it!" Thiago yelled, kicking the steel door open. They tumbled inside, the thick metal door slamming shut behind them with a finality that silenced the world. Silence. Just the thumping of their hearts and the dust settling in the dark. "Is everyone okay?" Thiago gasped, fumbling for his phone to use as a flashlight. "Henderson? You alive?" "I think so," Henderson wheezed, sliding down the wall. He was covered in gray dust, his clothes shredded, but he wasn't bleeding. "How did I… how did I walk out of that, Thiago? The ceiling fell right on top of me." Thiago shone the light on his neighbor. The golden aura was fading, retracting back into Henderson’s skin like a shadow retreating from the dawn. "I don't know," Thiago said, his voice barely a whisper. "I have no clue." Thiago looked down at his own hand. He felt a sharp, electric tingle crawl across his vision, like someone had flicked a switch behind his eyes. A new set of characters shimmered in the air, floating in the dark of the basement. [ SYSTEM INITIALIZED: LUCK TRACKING ACTIVATED ] [ CONGRATULATIONS: FIRST SURVIVAL EVENT RECORDED ] [ ANALYZING CURRENT THREAT LEVEL... ] Thiago stared, his breath hitching. "You seeing this? This... this system thing?" Henderson didn't look at him. He just stared at his hands, trembling. "I don't see anything, kid. I think I’m going into shock. Can you just… just leave the light on?" Thiago didn't answer. He was mesmerized by the screen manifesting in his peripheral vision. A small, vibrant red arrow appeared, pointing toward the heavy steel door they had just locked. [ ALERT: ANOMALY DETECTED ] [ COORDINATES: 40.7128° N, 74.0060° W ] [ URGENT: PROCEED TO TARGET OR FACE SYSTEM PURGE ] "Great," Thiago muttered, his hands shaking as he reached for the door handle. "Just my luck. It’s not over yet, is it?" "What are you doing?" Henderson hissed, clutching his knees. "Don't you dare go back out there." Thiago looked at the red arrow. It was pulsing now, demanding his attention, dragging his gaze toward the door. "I don't think we have a choice," Thiago said, feeling a cold, unfamiliar resolve hardening in his chest. "I think the world just changed, Henderson. And I think I’m the only one who can see the map."

THE APOCALIPSE CHOOSES ONE SURVIVOR EVERY NIGHT Red Sky Warning
The sky wasn't just changing; it was being erased. The familiar smog-choked orange of the city skyline had vanished, replaced by a churning, violent canopy of crimson code that dripped like molten wax onto the skyscrapers below.Thiago scrambled toward the edge of the platform, his fingers clawing at the rusted railing. Elias Thorne was already gone, his silhouette having flickered out like a bad connection, leaving nothing behind but the cold, biting wind."Marina!" Thiago screamed, his voice cracking. "Marina, where are you?"Below, amidst the dark, jagged geometry of the industrial sector, a silhouette darted through the gloom. It was her. She was sprinting toward the base of the tower, her movements erratic. A shockwave of pure, unfiltered energy rippled outward from the center of the city—a pulse that turned the air into static."Thiago! Get down!" her voice reached him, distant but sharp with terror."What is that? What’s happening to the sky?" he yelled back, his heart thudding

The plaza was a sprawling, suffocating cage, the air thick with the smell of scorched ozone and human despair. Thiago watched the white-clad woman—the "Alpha Conduit"—as she moved toward the center of the square. Her presence was like a physical weight, pressing down on the crowd, drawing the very air into her orbit."She’s heading for the relay point," Marina murmured, her voice barely audible over the low, rhythmic chanting of the crowd. "The central broadcast tower. If she locks in, the next cycle of harvesting begins."Thiago tightened his grip on the strap of his bag. His head was still throbbing with the residual static of the data dump, but his mind had never been clearer. "She’s not going to lock anything in. We’re stopping the broadcast.""Thiago, look at the tower," Marina said, gesturing toward the looming steel spire that pierced the smog like a jagged, rusted needle. "That’s not just a relay. It’s fortified. If we get within fifty yards, the automated systems will turn us

The heavy bulkhead door groaned, a screech of tortured steel that echoed through the dank subway tunnel. Thiago leaned his full weight against it, his boots skidding on the slick concrete until the gap was wide enough for them to squeeze through."Move, Marina! Quickly," Thiago urged, his breath coming in ragged, painful hitches.Marina didn't wait to be told twice. She slipped through the opening, her black aura flickering like a guttering candle. "The sentries—if they haven't given up, they’ll be cycling through the ventilation shafts by now. We can't stay on this level."Thiago hauled himself into the tunnel, his fingers raw and trembling. "I’m not looking to stay. I want out. I want to see how much of the city is left standing after that surge.""It’s not just about what’s left standing," Marina said, her voice strained as she straightened her coat. She looked pale, the exhaustion etched into the hollows of her eyes. "It’s about what’s changed. That data dump didn't just give you

The darkness in the bunker wasn't just an absence of light; it was thick, suffocating, and charged with the residual hum of the machine Thiago had just crippled."Marina? You still there?" Thiago whispered, his voice sounding thin against the vast, oppressive silence."I’m here," she breathed. Her voice was right beside him, shaky and strained. "My hands are still on the console. It… it won’t let go.""What do you mean, it won't let go? Pull your hands back!""I can’t. It’s feeding, Thiago. Not just the energy, but the information. It’s like a neural bypass. It’s trying to map my consciousness."Thiago reached out, his fingers brushing against the cold, jagged edge of the metal console until he found her arm. He gripped it firmly, his heart hammering against his ribs."Marina, listen to me. We need to leave. The whole grid is collapsing. If you stay connected, you’re going to burn out.""I can't stop it," she gasped, her body arching slightly as a wave of violet static flickered acros
