Chapter 1

1

"Ladies and Gentlemen, I am pleased to inform you that eight years after the death of late Lord Stanford Snow, his anonymous Son, Young Lord Snow, will be returning to society to search for a suitable wife..."

"His wife must come from an elite family in the society."

"Eligible families are encouraged to prepare their daughters and put parties together."

"He shall attend and then make his choice before the year runs out!"

"Good luck to the beautiful bachelorettes of New York!"

This news turns the busy city upside down in less than an hour.

Meetings are postponed, flights are cancelled, and members of the influential families immediately lock themselves in their living rooms to come up with a plan.

No one has seen the anonymous Young Lord Snow before, but surely the richest heir in the world would make the best husband for their daughters!

They are determined to throw the biggest parties, put their daughters into expensive dresses, anything that would get the attention of young Lord Snow....

Andrew Hudson bursts through the door, stunned to see that his grandmother and parents are already seated.

"What took you so long to come here, Andrew?" His grandmother snarls.

"Yes, Andrew, don't you care about the family anymore? Don't you know that if we don't come up with a plan fast, another family will beat us to it!"

"Don't you want your sister to be the wife of the richest man in the city?" His father barks.

Andrew hiss as he takes off his jacket. "Relax, everyone, the announcement was just made about two hours ago. You are acting like he has picked a wife already! Besides, need I remind you all that Emerald is already... Married?"

The family members look away with guilt and sips from their glasses of champagne.

Eight years ago, their grandfather was in a terrible car accident, but his life was saved by a mysterious man.

The man suffered a serious head trauma and a spinal injury in the process, and because of that, Old Mister Harrison Hudson vowed to repay the man.

He forced his precious granddaughter, the most beautiful girl in the entire city, to be married to his crippled saviour.

Emerald hated being married to this man, but her grandfather won't hear of it.

If she dares to divorce him very early in the marriage, her inheritance gets cut off too.

Harrison Hudson, the family patriarch, died only five years later, but Emerald is still married to him because of her grandfather's will.

Her grandfather's lawyers will make sure that she is kicked out of the house if she dares to leave the cripple...

This year, the marriage will clock seven years, and she will be able to slap the cripple with a divorce papers, but the wedding anniversary is over eight months away.

Lord Snow would have picked another lady to be his wife, and the Hudson family will regret it for the rest of their lives.

Seeing this obstacle in front of them, Kim Hudson, Emerald's mother, stands up with a determined look on her face.

"We have to kill the cripple!"

Andrew scoffs and looks away. "I plan to run for mayor in the upcoming elections, I won't be staining my hands with blood."

"How about we hire someone to do it for us?"

"And the person will just announce to our enemies what we have done, and Lord Snow will have nothing to do with us."

A troubled sigh leaves the mouth of everyone. They don't want to fail in this mission.

A soft knock comes on the door, and then it opens.

Everyone immediately has a snarl on their faces as an old wheelchair squeaks as the disabled man on it pushes it forward.

He is very handsome, tall and has the broadest of shoulders, but he looks so poor in his cheap suit and the tattered wheelchair he uses.

His name is Stanley Adkins, and he is the rubbish son-in-law that they have been speaking about.

"Grandmother, I went to buy your morning newspaper!" He tells her with a happy smile. "They didn't open early because of the rain, but I stood in it to get you the best print!"

Even with all his trouble, the aged woman only hiss and snatches the paper from him.

"Did you eat my leftover apple pie yesterday, Stanley?" Kim accuses him with a rude voice.

Stanley's eyes blinks with surprise. "Well, yes, mother, the kitchen staff said it was becoming stale and they wanted to give it to the dogs. I only took a small piece of it–"

"How dare you take food that is meant for my precious dogs?!" Kim blasts him. "Do you, a cripple and useless leech to this family, think that you are better than my imported dogs?!"

Stanley keeps his eyes to the ground, and his hands on his wheels. "No, mother."

"The next time you do something like this, you will sleep in the rain for seven days, now get out!"

Stanley murmurs a thank you and starts to move towards the door.

They are impatiently waiting for him to leave, so that they can continue their plan of getting rid of him and marrying his wife to someone else, but he stops and turns around.

"Please, sirs, and ma'ams, there is something that I want to bring to your notice." His fingers fidgeting with his wheels.

His father-in-law snorts and looks away in contempt. "Well, go on with it, it's not like we have all day."

Stanley holds his breath before he starts to speak. "It's Emerald, again. This time around, she brought her boyfriend into our matrimonial bedroom and had sex with him all night while I had to sleep outside in my chair. I needed my medicine, but she didn't open the door to allow me in, and that caused my legs to hurt all night."

This isn't something new, in fact Emerald has never honoured her marriage for even a single day.

She has kept so many boyfriends, and Stanley would dare not to complain, because he knows that his in-laws are only going to take her side.

The reason why he has voiced out this time around is because if he skips taking his medicine, then the condition of his legs keeps getting worse. That's the only reason.

This is a simple and reasonable complaint, but it manages to enrage the Hudson family, and they immediately start to rain insults on him.

The Hudson grandmother in fact takes her shoe off and starts to beat him with it, like he is a disobedient toddler.

"You shameless boy!" She cries. "we allowed you, a nobody, to marry into our family, and you dare complain about my granddaughter?!"

"How dare you complain about Emerald and what she does? Is she not an adult? You speak as if your legs are the only disabled part of you. Of course she had to find a real man to satisfy her!"

"Was it not our family's money that was used to get you the drugs?! Look at the ungrateful fool that grandfather brought into our family!"

Stanley feels the tears welling in his eyes. He knows that they won't stop until he apologizes.

So, even though his legs are painful and he can't walk, he throws himself to the ground to bow face-flat to his in-laws.

The tears in his eyes drop to the ground, but at least they can't see them in this position. He strongly will hold back what's left of his honour.

"My in-laws, I'm sorry for appearing to be ungrateful. I will go back to trying to be a good husband to Emerald."

Yes, you do that. Then maybe my poor grandchild doesn't have to have so many boyfriends!"

Stanley pulls his chair closer, so that he can get on it, but he falls on the first two attempts, earning the mockery and laughter of his in-laws.

Grandmother's eyes casually go to the television, the picture of the Late Lord Snow is being shown on the television, and Stanley is not that far from it.

With a pause, she notices something that makes her stifle laughter.

"Goodness, you indeed have the nose and the jaw of the late Lord Snow. If not for being dirt poor, you would have passed for his son!"
