The Haunted Isle's Sovereign

The auctioneer's hammer fell.

"Going once!"

Kael Blackwood sat in the shadows. His boots had holes. His coat was patched. His last copper was burning a hole in his pocket.

"Going twice!"

The nobles laughed. The Cursed Isle of Azure Aerie. Suicide in paradise. Five owners in ten years. All dead.

"Going—"

"One hundred silver."

Laughter stopped.

The auctioneer blinked. "One hundred silver from the gentleman in the back. Do I hear more?"

Silence.

"One hundred silver... sold to Kael Blackwood."

A young heir stood. "Enjoy your grave, pauper!"

Kael didn't flinch. He walked out. He had a ship to hire.

Three days later, the island emerged from the mist.

White beaches. Emerald jungles. Crystal water. Paradise.

Kael knew better.

The crew was nervous. They'd heard the stories. Fishermen who saw faces in the fog. Sailors who heard whispers in the wind.

"Still time to turn back." Darian stood beside him. The scarred guard was loyal. His father's last gift.

"I didn't buy this island for a vacation."

"The men want to leave."

"Then they don't get paid."

Kael stepped onto the sand. His boots sank slightly. Warm breeze. Sweet flowers. Perfect.

Then the whispers began.

Welcome home, Kael.

He spun.

No one there.

The crew was unloading. Laughing. Easy job. Easy money.

"You heard that?" Kael asked.

Darian shook his head.

Kael's stomach tightened. He'd been on ships too long. His mind was playing tricks.

"Set up camp. We're staying."

The afternoon was normal.

The crew worked. Tents rose. A fire crackled. The sky was clear. The water was calm.

Too calm.

Kael wandered into the jungle. The path was worn. Something had walked here. Something heavy.

The trees closed in. Silence. No birds. No insects. Just leaves rustling. His own footsteps.

The ruins appeared suddenly.

Stone walls covered in moss. Symbols carved into the blocks. Older than anything he'd seen.

He traced one marking.

It pulsed with warmth.

Kael jerked his hand back.

"Who's there?"

Nothing.

The path continued downward. A staircase spiraled into darkness. Water dripped somewhere below.

He followed it.

The air grew cold. His torch flickered. Shadows danced on the walls.

At the bottom, he found it.

A crystal. Eight feet tall. Pulses of violet light. The surface rippled like water. It reflected nothing but shadows.

Master. Prisoner. King. Fool. Take it.

Kael's hand reached out.

He stopped himself.

"What are you?"

The crystal pulsed.

A vision slammed into his skull.

His father. Alive. Sitting in the study of their manor. The one that had been stolen.

You came back, son.

"Dad?"

Take the island. Take what's yours. We can have everything back.

No. His father was dead. Murdered by rivals. Kael had seen the body.

"You're not real."

Am I?

The vision shattered. Kael was back in the cave. His torch had fallen. The only light was the pulsing crystal.

He scrambled backward. Fell. His head cracked against stone.

The whispers grew louder.

You bought the island. You came here. You belong to us.

"I belong to no one."

We'll see. The Warden knows you're here.

Kael ran.

He burst out of the ruins. The sky was purple. Sunset. How long had he been down there?

All owners run. All owners die. The Warden feeds.

Kael stumbled into camp. The crew had built a fire. Jax was roasting fish.

"Boss! You look like you've seen a ghost."

Kael didn't laugh.

He sat down. His hands were shaking.

Night fell.

Kael lay in his tent. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the crystal. Every time he listened, he heard the whispers.

Come home, Kael.

He almost screamed.

Instead, he forced himself to breathe.

He would master this island. He had nothing else. No family. No fortune. No future.

But he had this island.

He would make it his.

Dawn broke grey and cold. Kael emerged from his tent. The crew was packing.

"What's happening?"

Darian walked over. His face was pale.

"The night watch is dead."

Kael's blood turned cold.

"He clawed out his own throat. The others saw. They're terrified."

Kael walked to the body. The watchman lay on the sand. His eyes were open. His throat was shredded. No claw marks. No bites.

The whispers returned.

Welcome to the island, master. We've been waiting for you.

Kael stared at the corpse.

Something was hunting them.

And it had just begun.

Kael Blackwood thought he had hit rock bottom. The island would teach him there was much further to fall.
