“Simon, are you gonna remain seated and not make yourself useful today? At least, even if you can’t help the Katherine family financially, at least stop being a useless person,” Addy sneered, giving Simon a bad look over.

She’s Addy Katherine, Simon’s wife, Ash’s elder sister, and the Katherine family’s eldest granddaughter.

Today is the 75th birthday of the Katherine family matriarch. The walls were decorated in peach, and the top people in society were invited to the birthday celebration. It’s such an elegant and sophisticated event.

Many of these guests were mostly at this event to mock Simon, as everyone in high society knew about Simon.

Simon is a live-in son-in-law of the Katherine family. Aside from the fact that he has no money, Simon has no position or dignity in the Katherine family.

“What Addy said is true,” Mrs. Katherine said, looking at Simon with a condescending gaze.

“Simon, you have been in the Katherine family for a year now due to the benevolence of my late husband, who took pity on your situation and paid you back for saving his life by allowing you to get married to Ash Katherine as compensation.

"Despite the fact that you have been unable to produce the next generation of the Katherine family, then at least buy some expensive outfits for my birthday to save my face. You don’t even have a job. Every day, you wake up, sleep, eat, and walk around aimlessly, all in the name of searching for a job! You are useless!” added Mrs. Katherine.

Ash, Simon’s wife, added smugly, “Grandma, Simon has been trying to get a job, but you know he’s not smart like other normal people. And you know, in this present world of ours, smartness is all you need to land a job, which my husband lacks, sadly.”

Mrs. Katherine ignored Ash’s words and continued, “My husband getting you and Ash married is one of the biggest mistakes he ever made in his lifetime. I’m sure he’s rolling in his grave now.

"But what can I do? My husband’s last wish was to keep you here as a live-in son-in-law. Otherwise, I would have asked Ash to divorce you. After all, it’s not like you’re worthy of her. There are a lot of responsible, wealthy, and handsome young men wanting my gorgeous Ash’s hand in marriage.”

Simon clenched his fists angrily, so much so that his veins were throbbing out. His face looked so annoyed, but he didn’t speak back to Mrs. Katherine. He just kept quiet because he knew all they were saying was true. He was a useless and jobless part of the Katherine family.

He had been trying to get a job for a year, but despite all his good grades from a prestigious university, all the companies he applied to didn’t respond to him. Either they rejected him because he was too good for the role or because the hiring manager felt threatened by his CV. But he couldn’t refute all the claims the Katherine family was making because, in summary, he still didn’t have a job. Though they all think he isn’t smart, including his wife, it’s fine.

“Look at Addy’s husband, my other son-in-law, Kev. He brought me this rarest breed of Chihuahuas that costs $300,000 for my birthday. So can you, Simon, a pauper, ever be like Kev?” Mrs. Katherine looked seriously at Simon.

“A poor man like you can’t ever be as rich as Kev,” continued Mrs. Katherine. She asked Simon a rhetorical question.

“Grandmother, don’t speak like that. We’re all family. Don’t say things like that,” Kev smiled. He deliberately said that to pretend to defend Simon.

Then Kev spoke again, “Even though Simon is a poor and jobless man, at least Simon still is a loyal servant. Hahaha! That’s why his future will still be like his present, because he’s a servant. Hahaha!” Kev laughed loudly, and everyone else in the room laughed alongside him.

“Oh, lest I forget, jokes aside, I have an opening at a branch of my company. We need a security guard. It’s a nice role, and we pay really good for servants—sorry, guards. Hahaha!” said Kev.

“Honey, how much would Simon’s salary be if he decides to work for you?” Addy asked as she looked at Simon condescendingly.

“100 dollars. Because usually, regular servants get 97 dollars, but because he’s family, he gets 100 dollars. Am I not such a good brother-in-law, huh, Simon?”

Kev gloated boastfully and laughed at the end of his sentence.

When Kev said that, everyone laughed again and looked at Simon contemptuously.

Simon was gritting his teeth in anger, his eyes slightly reddening and his lips quivering. Ash, who had been quiet since, suddenly spoke up and said, “I’m sure everyone is amused already. Let’s leave my jobless and useless husband.” She said this with a big smile on her face.

“So, Grandmother, I’m sure Simon brought a gift for you. What did he bring?” the matriarch asked.

Everyone was staring hard at Simon with sharp eyes. They kept on insulting Simon.

“Grandmother, I—”

Before he could finish that sentence, the matriarch flared up and said, “I’m not your grandmother. It’s Mrs. Katherine for you,” Mrs. Katherine added.

Simon nodded his head and said, “Mrs. Katherine, I brought a gift for you.” Then Simon took out a small box from his pocket and prepared to open it.

“OMG, I refuse to accept this gift of yours!” said Mrs. Katherine as she looked at the small gift bag in Simon’s hand with disgust.

“I don’t want to receive gifts from a poor man like you. I already knew you would disgrace me and the Katherine family with this gift of yours.”
