Chapter 1

The heavy steel door buckled, then shrieked as it tore off its hinges, clattering against the concrete of the alleyway like a dying beast. Henry Russell stumbled out into the cool, biting air of the night, his lungs burning as if he’d inhaled shards of glass. Behind him, the corridor remained a testament to the chaos he’d wrought; three guards lay in twisted, silent heaps, their synthetic armor cracked and sparking from the violent discharge of his touch.

"Just keep moving," Henry wheezed, clutching his ribs. He felt the phantom vibration of the lab’s containment field still buzzing beneath his skin. "Don’t stop. Just breathe."

He stumbled into the main thoroughfare of Marirstil, and the city hit him like a physical blow. It was a cacophony of neon—cerulean, violent magenta, and caustic gold. Vehicles hummed on gravity rails high above, and the holographic billboards cast long, shivering shadows that seemed to mock his ragged state. He looked down at his hands; they were trembling, glowing with a faint, oily soot that defied the physics he’d been taught in the white-walled hell he just escaped.

"Hey, kid," a gravelly voice called out from the darkness of a nearby recessed doorway.

Henry spun around, his heart hammering against his sternum. A man with a chrome-plated jaw and eyes that flickered with low-grade ocular implants stepped into the light. Beside him, two others materialized, their hands resting on the hilts of jagged kinetic knives.

"You look like you fell off a freighter," the man continued, smirking. "And you’re bleeding all over the pavement. That’s a real mess."

"I don't have time for this," Henry gasped, his voice cracking. "Just... leave me alone. Please. I’m just trying to get away."

"Away from what? The facility?" The man laughed, a sound like grinding gears. "You look like one of the test rats that broke out of the Sector 4 labs. Those guys have a bounty on their heads the size of a skyline."

"I’m not a rat," Henry spat, his fingers twitching. The air around him suddenly grew heavy, ionized, and static electricity began to pop against his skin.

"Look at him, Jax," one of the others chimed in, stepping closer. "He’s twitching. Probably hyped up on stims. Let’s just strip him of his tech and leave him for the Enforcers. He’s a walking payday."

"I said move," Henry warned, his vision tunneling. The internal pain—a burning, corrosive heat in his stomach—was intensifying, threatening to boil over.

"Or what, sparky?" Jax stepped into his space, his chrome jaw clicking. "You gonna cry? Maybe beg for a bit of mercy? I love it when they beg."

"I’m not begging," Henry whispered, the darkness inside him pulsing rhythmically. "I’m warning you. Get back."

"You want to play tough?" Jax grabbed Henry by the collar, shoving him hard against the brick wall. The impact sent a jolt of pain through Henry’s spine, triggering a massive surge of dark, nebulous energy. "Let’s see what you’re made of."

"Get off me!" Henry screamed.

The explosion of force was absolute. It wasn't a fire, but a violent displacement of gravity and shadow. The alleyway lights blew out in a shower of sparks, and Jax was flung backward as if struck by a runaway mag-lev train. He hit the opposite wall with a sickening crunch, sliding down into a pile of trash.

"What the hell was that?" one of the remaining gang members yelled, his voice shrill with terror. "He’s a freak! Kill him!"

"Don’t come closer," Henry pleaded, though his own voice sounded alien to him—layered, distorted. He leaned his head back against the cold bricks, his eyes rolling toward the back of his skull. "I can’t... I can’t control it."

"He’s losing it, man! Just put a bolt through him!"

The attacker charged, knife raised. Henry instinctively thrust his hand outward. Instead of a blast, tendrils of dark matter lashed out like whips, ensnaring the man’s throat and slamming him into the ground. The attacker gagged, clutching at his neck, his eyes bulging as he was pinned to the wet pavement by an invisible weight.

"Please," Henry wept, the tears carving clean tracks through the grime on his face. "Stop making me do this."

"You’re a monster," the third man muttered, backing away into the shadows of the alley, his courage evaporated. "Whatever you are, the Enforcers are going to melt you down."

"I’m just... I’m just Henry," he whispered, though the name felt like something he’d stolen from a stranger. "Just let me go."

The energy continued to arc off his limbs, carving jagged scorch marks into the surrounding crates and walls. He felt the connection to his own body fraying. His strength was spent, drained by the very power that had saved him. The world began to tilt, the vibrant neon of Marirstil blurring into a singular, nauseating smear of light.

"Can't stay here," he muttered, swaying on his feet. "Need a place... dark... quiet..."

He took one step, then another, his knees buckling under the weight of his own exhaustion. The dark tendrils holding the attacker dissipated, leaving the man gasping and crawling frantically toward the street. Henry didn't even notice. He slumped against a rusted dumpster, his breath coming in shallow, shuddering hitches.

"Is that him?"

The sound drifted from the end of the alley. A low, rhythmic thrumming—the distinctive engine note of an Enforcer patrol interceptor. A spotlight swept over the alley entrance, cutting through the smog with clinical precision.

"Sector 9 reported a power surge," a voice boomed from a loudspeaker, sounding metallic and cold. "Visual contact confirmed. Suspect is incapacitated. Prepare for containment."

Henry tried to lift his head, but his muscles had turned to lead. The heat in his chest was fading, replaced by a numbing cold that crept up his limbs.

"Not here," he murmured, his eyelids fluttering. "Not again."

"Target is down," the voice repeated, closer now. Heavy, synchronized footsteps echoed on the pavement—the sound of armored boots marching in perfect formation.

Henry stared at the approaching light, his vision failing. He could see the silhouettes of figures encased in matte-black tactical gear, rifles leveled at his prone form. He reached out a trembling hand, fingers brushing against the cold, wet ground, hoping for one last spark, one last burst of power to propel him into the shadows.

But there was nothing left.

As the sirens wailed, a high-pitched, mournful sound that echoed off the skyscrapers, Henry’s hand dropped. The neon city lights seemed to rush toward him, then shatter into darkness as he let go, his consciousness slipping into the void, leaving him entirely at the mercy of the city that had wanted him dead from the moment he arrived.
