He woke up from a years long coma only to realize his entire life was a lie. Ethan Vance thought he was a hero for jumping in front of a speeding car to save his wife and mother in law. But when his eyes open in a dark hospital room, he hears his wife in the arms of another man right beside his bed. Even worse, the man is the exact driver who ran him down. The crash was never an accident. It was a cold, calculated trap to steal his family fortune and collect a massive insurance payout. They kept him alive as a helpless joke while they spent his money. But just as despair threatens to break him, a strange sound echoes in his head. The system has arrived, and it is time for payback.

Chapter 1: The Sounds in the Dark

The sweetest sounds in the world can hold the deadliest poison.

Ethan Vance felt his consciousness slowly piece itself back together like shattered glass. For three long years, there was only a heavy, suffocating void. He could not feel his hands, his feet, or the breath leaving his lungs. Then, a sudden spark ignited in his brain. His eyes did not open, but his ears twitched. He was awake. He was finally alive.

The silence he expected upon returning to the waking world did not exist. Instead, the very first thing that flooded his sensory prison was a low, breathless laugh that immediately curdled the blood in his veins. It was a sound he knew better than his own heartbeat, yet right now, it sounded completely alien and dripping with malice.

"Careful, Marcus," Chloe whispered, her voice laced with a playful gasp that made Ethan's mental gears grind to a painful halt. "You are going to shake the bed. What if the nurses walk in on us?"

"Let them walk in," a man replied, his voice deep, gravelly, and entirely dripping with arrogance. "The staff on this floor do not care about what happens in these private rooms. Besides, who is going to tell on us? Your sleeping beauty here?"

Ethan felt a cold dread freeze his newly awakened mind. That was Chloe, his wife. The woman he adored. The woman he jumped in front of a speeding SUV to protect. He remembered the blinding headlights, the screech of tires on wet pavement, and the terrifying moment he threw his body forward to push Chloe and her mother out of harm's way. He had spent years thinking he was protecting his family, but the voices right beside him told a vastly different story.

"You are terrible," Chloe giggled, and Ethan heard the distinct rustle of hospital bedsheets right beside his pinned, immobile legs. "But seriously, keep it down. The doctor said his brain activity has been flat for months. Still, it creeps me out when you touch me right next to him."

"That is the best part," Marcus chuckled, and Ethan heard the heavy thud of a man shifting his weight on the mattress, making the metal frame groan slightly under the pressure. "Look at him. He is a total vegetable. A helpless, empty husk. He has no idea that while he lies there rotting, I am enjoying his beautiful wife and his massive bank account."

Ethan tried to scream. He tried to slam his fists against the bed, to rip the medical tubes from his throat, to open his eyes and tear the man apart with his bare hands. But his body refused to obey even the simplest command. He was locked inside a fleshy prison, entirely paralyzed, forced to listen to his own ultimate humiliation.

"Do not remind me of the money," Chloe sighed, her tone suddenly turning bitter and sharp. "The lawyers are taking forever with the final estate transfer. I have to keep playing the grieving, loyal wife every single day for the cameras. It is exhausting to shed tears for a ghost."

"It will be over soon, babe," Marcus said, his voice closer now, drifting right above Ethan’s face. "The insurance payout alone is going to make us richer than we ever dreamed. We just need the doctors to officially declare him brain dead so we can pull the plug without any legal issues."

"I still can not believe we actually pulled it off," Chloe said, letting out a soft, dark laugh that echoed off the sterile walls. "The day of the accident, my heart was pounding so fast. I thought for sure the police would realize it was a trap."

Ethan felt his heart stop. A trap.

"Please," Marcus scoffed proudly, his tone filled with absolute smugness. "I timed it perfectly. You and your mother led him to the exact spot on the crosswalk right on schedule. I hit the gas, aimed straight for him, and boom. The perfect accident. Everyone thought I was just a reckless driver who lost control. No one suspected a thing."

"You were amazing that day," Chloe murmured, and Ethan could hear the unmistakable sound of a kiss. "He really thought he was being a hero. He actually threw himself in front of the car to save us. What an idiot."

"An idiot with a massive family fortune," Marcus corrected her, laughing loudly without a single care. "Though I am still a bit annoyed I did not kill him outright on the asphalt. Leaving him in a vegetative state for years just added an extra step. But hey, watching him lie here completely helpless while we indulge ourselves right in front of his comatose body is a pretty great thrill."

Every single word felt like a jagged blade ripping through Ethan's soul. The crash was not an accident. The love of his life, the woman he gave up his health and his future to protect, had planned his murder from the very beginning. They used his love, his protective instincts, and his natural kindness as a weapon to destroy him. They wanted him dead so they could fly free together, seize his family wealth, and live off his insurance money.

Despair, absolute betrayal, and an apocalyptic fury shook Ethan to his very core. His mind screamed in the dark, burning with a helpless, suffocating rage that threatened to snap his remaining sanity. He wanted revenge. He wanted them to bleed. He wanted to tear the world apart.

Suddenly, a sharp, crystalline ring vibrated inside his skull, drowning out the murmurs of his unfaithful wife.

Ding.

The sound was clean, futuristic, and completely detached from the hospital room. A floating, translucent blue screen materialized right behind his closed eyelids, glowing with sharp digital precision.

Strength in Adversity System initialized.

Host emotional trauma levels detected at maximum capacity. Host betrayal index at one hundred percent. Host physical degradation severe.

Ethan stared at the glowing words in his mind, his thoughts racing in utter shock. What was this? He tried to process the strange digital interface, but his focus was broken by Chloe's sudden intake of breath.

"What was that noise?" Chloe asked suddenly, her voice tightening with a sudden spark of panic as she pulled away from Marcus. "Did you hear that digital chime?"

"Relax, it is just one of his life support monitors," Marcus replied carelessly, waving his hand as if dismissing a fly. "The machines make weird noises all the time. He is not going anywhere, Chloe."

Inside Ethan's head, the text on the glowing blue screen rapidly shifted, changing from a calm blue to a bright, bleeding red.

Warning. Host cardiac arrest imminent due to extreme emotional shock and elevated blood pressure. Internal systems failing. Do you wish to trade your accumulated rage for immediate cellular regeneration?

Ethan did not hesitate for a single second. The system offered a lifeline, a chance to rewrite his fate, and he seized it with all the anger remaining in his soul. Yes, his mind roared into the void. Yes, heal me.

System request accepted. Commencing adversity conversion. Reversing cellular decay now.

The digital timer began to count down rapidly, and Ethan braced himself for whatever was coming next. He could feel a strange, burning heat beginning to spread from the center of his chest outward to his frozen limbs. The game was changing, and the monsters beside him had no idea he was listening.
