Chapter 1

“I want it to be delivered today, I have sent you the address,” he said smoothly.

“Alright boss.”

Damian hung up as he ambled towards the entrance of his in-laws’ apartment. He heard his wife’s voice and he could tell she was talking with someone. He paused at his track when he knew the other person was his mother-in-law.

It wasn’t a secret that she saw him as a nobody. Although Damian had tried his best to make things work, Mrs Camilla saw him as an unremarkable man who couldn’t afford her daughter the life she deserved.

He took a deep breath and took a step, which came to a halt the moment he heard his wife’s statement.

“I am pregnant for Him,” Anastasia said with her voice laced with excitement. “I don’t know how to tell him, but I am sure he will be excited when he knows the truth.”

Mrs. Camilla’s eyes flushed with deep anger. “Pregnant, for whom? Don’t tell me it’s for that lowlife.” Her voice was dripping with disgust.

“Never, Mom,” Anastasia waved her hand frantically. “I am pregnant for Maxwell Cross. Not Damian. Mom, do you think I will ever allow that pathetic fool to lie with me?” Her lips curled in disdain.

Damian’s heart sank in disbelief. He felt his pulse racing as he struggled to understand what he had just heard. “Pregnant? For Maxwell Cross. The son of the fourth richest man in Aurora.”

The news hit him like a sledgehammer. He had been married to her for two years, and he had never even been intimate with her once. Never in a way were the husband and wife supposed to.

“You should open up to him, I am sure he will be happy to know he is expecting a baby.” Mrs Camilla said with her voice barely above a whisper.

“What about Damian? What should I tell him?” Anastasia said with a hint of emotion surging through her veins.

Come off it, Ana.” Mrs. Camila snapped. “Are you that dumb to see the truth? You getting pregnant for Maxwell is a sign that you two are meant to be together. Not with that Freeloader, I have gotten the divorce papers from the lawyer, and you can send him away. There is no way we can keep him in this house, even if he agrees to father the child.”

Damian’s stomach twisted, and his grip on the wine bottle loosened, crashing to the floor with a shattering sound; the wine splattered everywhere. It’s a deep red liquid staining the floor.

Mrs Camilla rolled her eyes at Damian, the silence hanging heavy in the air.

Damien’s breath caught in his throat. “How could you betray me like this, Anastasia?” He said with his voice filled with rage.

“Cut the crab, Damian.” Anastasia cut him. “Where were you expecting me to have a baby for you when you can’t afford a three-square meal?”

Her eyes flickered to the broken wine bottle, their faces painted with contempt. “You think coming with cheap wine for my birthday will make me love you? Hell no. I can’t love you, it’s time you get that into your skull. We are no match for each other. My father was drunk when he forced me into marrying you.”

Damian was about to open his mouth when the door opened revealing Maxwell’s cross. He stood tall; his presence brought excitement to both mother and daughter.

“You came as expected,” Anastasia said, smiling and pecking his cheeks.

Damian’s face flushed in anger, and his jaw tightened with his fist clenched beside him.

“I thought I had to drop by and bring something for my angel.” He said with a smooth tone. “Just a little something to celebrate with you.”

Thank you,” Anastasia said with a smile as she took the gift, “Wow, this is huge.” She blushed.

“I will send in more gifts later in the day.”

“You didn’t have to, but I appreciate it.”

“Anastasia, what are you doing? You can’t accept his gift when I am here.” Damian voiced in fury.

Maxwell gritted his teeth and sneered, “Who is this, and who are you to tell her what to accept and what not to accept,”

“You shouldn’t exchange words with him, Maxwell. He is just a nobody. Who thinks he can force his way into our family just by healing my husband?” Mrs. Camilla’s voice was filled with contempt.

“What did you get for her, a cheap wine? Which got broken before you could even deliver it.” She added.

“It’s not cheap, I can get you more,” Damien responded. His face twisted in a disdainful grimace.

They both burst into laughter, “A wine without a label, are you even sure he didn’t add water to some ingredients to make it look like a wine?” Anastasia sneered.

Damian felt hurt by her words; the doorbell distracted them. Mrs. Camilla walked to the door. This time, a deliveryman was standing at the entrance with a box.

“Delivery for Mrs. Anastasia.” The man said politely.

Anastasia rushed to check the gift. She signed it before taking the gift inside the house.

“You brought the gift for me; you are such a darling,” Anastasia said excitedly.

“It’s nothing, today is your day.” He lied, although he was surprised as well seeing the gift.

Maxwell is taking credit for something he didn’t purchase. Anastasia opened the velvet box with a glint of gold peeking out. It was a golden necklace.

“Wow, this is beautiful.” Mrs. Camila grinned.

Anastasia gaped in surprise.

Damian glared at them, Maxwell is taking credit for something he got for his wife.

How ugly of him!

How easy it is for Maxwell to play with their brains!

Is Anastasia and her mother dull that they couldn’t see the real truth?

“If you don’t like it, I can get you something better than this.” Maxwell knew from the look of things that the necklace was way too expensive and it was a limited edition.

It will take him months to get it, he wondered who would have sent something as expensive as this to Anastasia, but he knew he had to play along.

Damian could feel his blood simmer, seeing Maxwell take the praise for something he bought for his wife.

Not only did they betray him, but they saw him as a nobody who couldn’t afford anything.

“You should ask Maxwell if he is truly the one who sent this gift, from the look on his face. I believe he couldn’t afford this.” Damian said coldly.
