Chapter 1

Mason was very busy cleaning the tableware after everyone had finished breakfast this morning. As usual, he was the busiest person in the morning. Both of his hands were full, holding plates and hand rags, tidying up while cleaning the table simultaneously.

Meanwhile, a middle-aged woman was watching him with an annoyed face. Mason always made her emotional. The woman named Eva's eyes widened when she saw the pile of plates on the table swaying.

"Hey, do your job well." Her face bent with a sharp look in her eyes. "Don't ruin those nice plates you're holding in your hands."

Mason remained silent, continuing to wipe the table until everything was completely clean. But suddenly, a small child ran fast and bumped into Mason intentionally, causing the plate in his hand to fall to the floor.

That made Eva yell out loudly. "You idiot!" She held her head in anger. "Useless trash! You can't even do a job like this. You're costing me hundreds of dollars, damn it!"

"It's not my fault, mother." Mason looked at the boy who had hit him. "Axelo hit me."

"Grandma, he's lying!" The little boy rushed over to Eva and hid behind the middle-aged woman's body. "Look, he's blaming me instead. He's the useless one."

"Insolent. Why are you blaming my grandson?" Eva immediately took Axelo's hand and stroked the little boy's face. "Oh, dear. Are you okay? No broken plates hit your leg, right?"

The middle-aged woman looked worried about Axelo. This happened often, as she loved and used to pamper the boy.

"I'm so scared, Grandma." Axelo acted spoiled in front of his grandmother. "I almost hit my hand on the plate. He's so useless, Grandma. What if I get hit by a broken plate, too? I'll get hurt."

Mason was silent as he watched his sister-in-law's son. It was clear that Axelo had deliberately hit him earlier. Axelo was indeed an ignorant child and never stopped bothering Mason.

Almost every day, there was always something the boy did, like breaking Eva's favourite flower fitting, making a mess in the house and other things that got Mason in trouble for being blamed.

"You're useless." Eva turned her gaze back to Mason. "You're in this house because you're lucky. My husband married my daughter to an idiot like you."

"Yeah, my aunt should have found a better man," Axelo commented, heating up the atmosphere.

"Yes, of course. It's a shame your grandfather set her up with a man like this." Eva looked at Mason with a cynical gaze.

Mason could only exhale softly at the insult. It was not the first time he had heard such words. They had been said many times. He was used to the insults and diatribes from his wife's family.

"What a slob." Eva scrunched up her waist, looking at the plate on the floor. "That plate costs more than you do."

"I'll replace it," Mason replied calmly without any hesitation.

That made Eva laugh sarcastically. "Replace it?" She snorted in annoyance. "That plate cost 300 dollars. Where did you get the money from, huh?"

300 dollars was a small amount of money to Mason. In fact, he could replace more than 100 plates if necessary. It was easy.

"You won't be able to replace them. You don't have a job." Axelo flipped his thumbs down, mocking Mason.

"You're so ignorant," Eva grumbled. I don't know how many times the dishes in her house had been broken because of Mason.

"It's up to you where you get the money from. You have to pay for it anyway!"

Eva and Axelo left. Meanwhile, Mason could only sigh softly, cleaning up the broken dishes.

No one in this house liked him. They always looked down on him, and even his wife never treated him well. He and Selena, his wife, had been married for a year, although the marriage happened because of his father-in-law's request.

After everything was done, Mason prepared a bowl of warm water and chicken soup for someone. He hurriedly carried it until his feet stopped in front of a room's door.

Mason opened the door and cautiously walked inside. "Good morning. Did you sleep well?"

The man's face was slightly flat from fatigue, but his tone was very friendly. He wrung out a rag that had been dipped in a bowl of warm water and cleaned the body of a middle-aged man who was lying weak and helpless. Mason painstakingly wiped the body of his father-in-law, who had suffered a stroke in the past few months.

Mason changed his clothes and sat his father-in-law down. "Is it comfortable?"

Mason always engaged his father-in-law in conversation even though he never got an answer. He smiled a little when Rowan winked once in response to his question just now.

"Now it's time to eat." Mason fed his father-in-law.

The middle-aged man devoured it slowly, struggling so much that Mason repeatedly wiped around his lips with a rag until all the pureed soup was gone.

"I hope Father can recover soon." Mason patted the back of the middle-aged man's hand lightly.

Rowan's eyes glazed over. No one was as sincere as Mason. Her family was very busy, and only this man always helped her.

"Don't worry. I'll take care of this family like I promised you." Mason meant it, and Rowan gave him a quiet wink.

After finishing taking care of Rowan, Mason left the room. He still couldn't rest because he had to prepare a huge dinner for the party.

Today was the most important day for his wife. Selena was about to get a high promotion in a multinational company, and Mason had intended to buy her a surprise gift for her accomplishment. However, he hadn't gotten around to it yet because he was so busy preparing for the party.

"Where have you been? Hurry up and prepare the food for the party." Eva grumbled again when she saw Mason, who had just returned.

Mason rushed into the kitchen, cooking the food. Even though there were already many servants helping, he still worked harder than anyone else.

Mason smiled happily when all the food was finished. "It's all done." He glanced at his watch. "There's still time to prepare it."

Although he hadn't had time to buy a gift yet, he was preparing something to give to Selena. He tried to finish the gift and hurried to change his clothes.

Mason held the small box in his hand. "I'll show her this."

He stepped into the party, his gaze focused on Selena, who stood before everyone.

"Thank you to my family and especially to my husband." Selena smiled, raising her hand to point at Mason.

Mason was a little surprised that his wife was being sweet and a spectacle in front of many people this time, which confused him, but he didn't want to ruin this important event.

Even though he had been secretly helping Selena get her to where she was now. Mason felt that he should be happy with her.

"Drink this wine, Husband." Selena extended the red wine glass in her hand towards Mason. "I poured it myself."

Seeing his wife's warm gesture made Mason feel happy. He smiled and reached for the glass Selena had given him. He took a sip of the drink in his glass.

But right at that moment, he felt his chest suddenly burn, and his breathing became laboured. Mason's body staggered back, then coughed.

As Mason covered his mouth, he felt something in the palm of his hand. His eyes rounded at the sight of the red blood on his palm.

Mason looked at the people around him, and at that moment, he saw them all smiling, including Selena, who was looking at him with a small smirk. "You... what are you doing?"
