Chapter 1

The Worst Birthday Ever

Marvin Scharm never expected his 36th birthday to turn out this badly.

Instead of wishing him a happy birthday with a sweet smile and a gift, Melanie Dunn—his girlfriend—told him they had to end their relationship.

And what made it truly awful was Melanie’s reason: she was accepting Alex’s proposal at the direction of her parents, and they were getting engaged tomorrow.

“So, this will be the last time we meet. I hope you won’t try to disrupt our engagement ceremony,” Melanie said coldly.

Marvin clamped his mouth shut. His hands, resting on his thighs, clenched tightly. The dinner they had been enjoying suddenly tasted bitter.

“Mel, are you serious?”

“I’m fucking serious, Marvin! How many times do I have to say it? Your money is gone. You can’t afford my needs anymore. Why force it? Let’s just break up. You can find another woman who’s willing to accept your poverty.”

Marvin took a deep breath. They had been dating for three years, and indeed, as Melanie just said, his money was gone.

In the early days of their relationship, Marvin could still buy Melanie expensive gifts, take her on out-of-town vacations, and cover her skincare and body treatment costs.

Now, that was no longer possible. In the last two weeks, he had even been dealing with debt collectors.

Actually, Marvin had been worried for the past two months that this moment would come. That’s why he had pushed himself as hard as possible to borrow a large sum of money from loan sharks.

Marvin didn’t regret his rash decision. It was all for Melanie, the woman he loved. But now, Melanie was accepting Axel’s proposal. He couldn’t accept this!

Axel was Melanie’s ex-boyfriend. He had just returned from the United States and was now continuing the family business empire of the Banguards, one of the second-tier wealthy families in Murndale city.

In almost every aspect, Axel far surpassed him. Marvin knew that.

“Mel, please tell me you’re lying…”

“I’m not lying, Marvin. I’m telling you the truth.”

“But how am I supposed to live without you? I can’t even imagine that.”

“That’s your problem, not mine.”

Silence fell. Coincidentally, the soft music that had been playing earlier stopped.

They were currently in a rather luxurious and popular restaurant in the city center. Melanie had made the reservation; she also seemed to be the one who would pay for all the dishes ordered.

Marvin initially thought Melanie was doing this as a form of appreciation for everything he had done and given her over the years. But now, Marvin was confused. Was Melanie paying out of her own pocket because she wanted to end her relationship with Marvin?

“Mel, can we discuss this matter again? I don’t think I–”

“Oh, shut up! I’ve told you what I have to tell. And it’s fucking clear! Why don’t you understand?”

Marvin took another deep breath. Was everything going to end here? All the sacrifices he had made to maintain their relationship—money, time, effort—would be in vain?

“Hi, Mel. How is it going? You decided to break up with this loser, right?”

A baritone male voice suddenly came from behind. Marvin turned his head and rotated his body.

There stood a tall, large man in an elegant suit, with slicked-back hair, and a gold-plated watch on his left wrist. His steps were full of confidence, as was his crooked smile.

He was Alexander Banguard, the man who would be engaged to Melanie tomorrow.

“Why are you here? What the hell are you doing here, Alex?!”

Marvin immediately stood up and glared at Alex with hostility.

Even noticing that Marvin’s hands were clenched, Alex remained calm. His gaze at Marvin was utterly dismissive.

“Should I answer your question? You might regret it when you hear it,” Alex said, smiling mockingly.

“Don’t fuck with me! Just answer my question, you spoiled rich jerk!” Marvin retorted.

Splash!

Suddenly, cold liquid hit the back of his hair. Marvin slowly turned his body and looked. Melanie was staring at him, full of anger. In her right hand, an empty wine glass.

“Mel, you just–”

“I’m sick of you, Marvin!” Melanie cut him off. “Do you know who paid for this table reservation and who paid for all these dishes—including the one you ate? He’s the one. Alex paid for it. How dare you insult him. You’re so ungrateful!”

Marvin’s eyes widened. He immediately shifted his gaze to Alex and saw the Young Master of the Banguards smirking and raising an eyebrow.

“Is what Mel just said true? You paid for all this?” Marvin asked.

“That’s right,” Alex answered casually. “Why? Do you feel indebted to me now?”

Marvin snorted as his hands clenched again. Alex walked past him casually. Without any hesitation, he approached Melanie and kissed her, right on the lips.

There was no rejection from Melanie. Instead, she returned Alex’s smile and let the man kiss her once more.

“Now it’s clear, isn’t it?” Alex taunted, looking back at Marvin. “Melanie is no longer your girlfriend. Tomorrow, she will be my fiancée. You can leave now. I want to enjoy my special dinner with her.”

Alex gestured with his hand, dismissing Marvin. Marvin snorted again. His pride was trampled, but he didn’t know what he could do.

“What are you waiting for? Hurry up and leave,” Alex urged.

“Just so you know, I paid for this table reservation because I wanted to have dinner alone with Melanie. Don’t be so full of yourself, Marvin.”

“As for the food and drinks you’ve already eaten and drunk, it’s no problem. Consider it a gift from me. When else will you get to eat and drink so deliciously? Right, poor boy?”

Marvin snorted for the umpteenth time. His hands clenched so tightly that his palms were wounded, and blood now dripped from them.
